QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 6, 2013 -> 07:10 PM) Going through the effort of destroying people to prevent the destruction of people doesn't make sense. Especially when there's a very high likelihood that the people you are destroying will probably be destroyed anyways whether you destroy them or not. The intent of the strikes will not be to destroy people. The intent will be to destroy Syrian weaponry. People will die, but strike targets will be determined on their importance to Syria's ability to launch another chemical attack. This isn't a kill people mission.

Sox turn down trade offer for Alexei from Cardinals

QUOTE (Wedge @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 06:25 PM) If it's easily replaceable, who do you replace it with? Somebody in the farm system already? Somebody hitting free agency? My thought is your best bet is to convert Beckham to SS but I'd love to hear your idea. I'm not talking about another SS. I'll take any replacement level SS. An additional $10 mil spent at a position that actually creates runs will be much more productive than the amount of runs Alexei produces. He simply does not produce that many. For a team that doesn't score from the offensive positions to begin with, spending 1/10 of payroll on a .650 OPS SS is useless. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) If you really think Alexei is easily replaceable, just remember that the Red Sox gave Stephen Drew $9.5 million this year after he put up a .657 OPS last year while playing only 79 games. He's hitting .228 this year with a .712 OPS for that money. If we don't trade for one, finding a major league quality shortstop on the free agent market, even a 1 year, stopgap measure, is going to be incredibly pricey. That's why I think trading Alexei is the "Throw in the towel" move for next year...you can spend the money to replace Rios, you already have players to replace Peavy, but replacing Alexei will be very difficult if that replacement has to be found through free agency. I said his production is easily replaceable. This idea that just because you have a MIF that is above league average, you must keep him is ridiculous. Because above league average MIF still suck when compared to overall league average. They don't win you games and wasting $10 mil on them when it could be spent on someone who is much more productive is a horrible use of resources. -

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) Teams dont trade SS's with production like Ramirez because they are too difficult to replace. SS is largely a defensive position and getting a guy that can add solid offense from that position is a gold mine. In theory in works, but in practice there just aren't guys out there that you can acquire that fit the bill. Define solid offense? A .650 OPS is solid? Alexei's production is so replaceable it's not even funny. Even a worst case scenario, going from a .650 OPS to a .550 OPS at SS is a negligible drop, especially if you are getting a potential true impact player. -
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 11, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) Who are these 6'10 forwards that move like guards? Kevin Durant and? The players are stronger now (although the average size of an NBA player hasn't really changed since the 90s) and the league as a whole is probably a little faster but I don't think that has changed all that much. It's not the fact that we have a ton of those kinds of players, it's the fact we have them. IIt's an indication of where overall athleticism has gone. Soon we'll have a 7 footer that moves like a guard used to. Athletes have always progressively gotten bigger, stronger, and faster. I just so happen to think with the advances in training and nutrion that have occurred the past couple decades, the gap in athleticism between the '90s and now is probably the largest gap in sports history. Not just basketball.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Feb 11, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) I really don't think it's that black and white. The 90s had some really good athletes too. Overall today's PGs are probably a bit more athletic (guys like Westbrook and Rose are pretty sick athletes), but the big men today tend to be less athletic. I just looked at the rebounding leaders for this year and it goes as follows: Howard, Randolph, Vucevic, Asik, and Chandler. Howard is really the only amazing athlete in that bunch (and he's been hobbled this year). Chandler is okay, but isn't nearly as athletic as he used to be. The top 5 from 1991? Rodman, Kevin Willis, David Robinson, Mutombo, and Olajuwan. There are some pretty good athletes in that bunch. Fair to say that they were obviously more athletic than this year's leaders. Rebounding is just a raw stat and you don't have to take it seriously if you don't want, but it does usually deal with athleticism (as well as fundamentals). You can't tell me that today's big men are better athletes than the 90s. Also, fundamentals still win out over athleticism a good portion of the time. That's why Duncan is still so good. That's why Tony Parker is averaging 20 points a game on 53%(59.5 TS%) shooting while Westbrook is shooting 42.5% (52 TS%) with the best offensive player in the league next to him. The C has gone the way of the dodo bird. You have 6'10" forwards that move like '90 guards now. Players are bigger, stronger, and faster. I don't think the athleticism is even close.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) Lars Anderson was an overhyped Boston prospect forever. He does have power though and some promise. Was like the #17 prospect in all of baseball in 2009. He has no power which is why he fell off the prospect map. It never developed like scouts thought it would.

The Red Sox would let Crawford go in a heartbeat.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 02:25 AM) There's a hitch in it. It's not as smooth as many historically good lefty batters. Griffey, Will Clark, Bonds... PS I'm one of those mavericks that picked Harper over Trout in the poll. No there's not. He uses a unique toe tap as a timing mechanism. His actual swing is as sweet as any.

Chris Sale is now the CLOSER?!/Until he's not (Update)
sircaffey replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 4, 2012 -> 10:14 PM) Are people seriously mad about the org saving this kid's arm? Smart move, better than most teams would've done. Sale is a TJ surgery waiting to happen, hopefully they help him build up the strength to prevent it. No ones mad about saving his arm. They are mad about how unconventional his handling was, and how perhaps things could have been different if they would have let him develop more traditionally. Especially for an organization starved of anything resembling a SP. -

They may as well trade him. Reed is the best RP in the organization. -
David Lee is just as flawed as Booze.

There's got to be some sort of substantial financial benefits that the Rangers will reap off the field, given Yu's iconic status in Japan.

They just showed Herm Schneider...Looking thin.

Felix is in another league.

I'll be very happy when Verdell graduates. Addition by subtraction. -
Don't worry. Lucas is doing his Rose impression. 7 shots through the 1st quarter.

QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) He's getting more shots, but he hasn't been making a higher percentage of those shots, which you would expect if the lane was opening up. No, you shouldn't be expecting that. The lane itself isn't opening up. What his 3 PT shot does is allow him to beat HIS man. That doesn't change the fact that there are 7 footers manning the paint. The point is he's getting an increased number of higher percentage shotsbecause of his 3 PT shot.
-
QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 10:15 AM) Using this logic, you'd then have me believe that since he started shooting more three pointers, he's become more effective and a better scorer in the lane, right? Rose's shooting numbers from within 9 feet throughout his career: 2009 - 4.0 FG, 7.1 FGA = 56.3% 2010 - 4.3 FG, 7.7 FGA = 55.8% 2011 - 4.8 FG, 8.7 FGA = 55.1% He's been creating his shot more often in the lane than he did as a rookie (23.9 %As in 2009 opposed to 15.6 in 2011), but the idea that he's becoming more effective at it certainly doesn't seem to hold any water. Your stats back up his claim. Since Rose has developed a 3 PT game, he's getting more shots within 9 feet. You don't really expect any player to shoot much higher than 55% within 9 feet do you?
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 10, 2012 -> 09:34 AM) To be fair, he was up around 38% until that Detroit game (1/4) and has since made 2 of his last 18 which has really dragged down his percentage. This. Freaking out over 4 games is crazy. It's EARLY.

It was Rose running out of gas and spraining an ankle. Luol is a machine. Butler is a rookie that had no preseason. Give it time.
