I envy the Phillies.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 11:03 AM) You guys are putting way too much faith in Viciedo, who is far from a proven major league commodity. I like him a lot over the long run, but he's still very young and will have his ups and downs. BTW, Mike Sirotka out-pitched Wilson Alvarez down the stretch in 1997. But nobody cared, because the damage was already done. I'm not putting faith in him. I'm merely talking about this supposed huge drop in attendance that you are suggesting would happen if KW traded Quentin. This is not a WF situation.

QUOTE (WCSox @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 10:48 AM) If Kenny decides to deal somebody like Quentin or Danks right now, he's effectively cutting the legs off of a team that has a very legit chance at a division title. Prematurely shutting the window of opportunity on this team would send a bad message to the current season ticket-holders, reminding them of the unprofessionally-run organization that wasn't serious about winning back in the '90s. I think you are overblowing this whole white flag trade comparison. That trade involved 2 SP and the team's closer. It's magnitude is far greater than just a Quentin trade, especially since the fanbase knows who Viciedo is and is excited for his arrival.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 29, 2011 -> 12:04 AM) Baseball as a whole also realized record revenues and attendance figures over the last decade (drew over 200 million more fans than the previous decade) and also, the Cell underwent some major renovations during the period of increase, so those would be factors as well. Season ticket holders are the hardcore fans and they definitely respond most favorably to winning, but the post-White Flag era days, all across the game, were very different than now, and there was no interleague play, no crosstown classic, no WS championship to remember, etc. So the argument of season ticket holders dropping off after a couple bad trades would hold some water, but trying to imply a return of some of the figures you mentioned is a pretty gigantic leap IMO. This.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 11:29 PM) Fair point I suppose, despite the condescension. How similar is the pre-2005 fan base to the current, though? Actually, I don't agree with the historical references. Things have changed. The Sox have a larger fan base now and a stadium that is actually enjoyable to go to and not the blue turd they once had.

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)

QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 11:28 AM) BA did have him as the Blue Jays #1 in 09, and #5 in 10. Which shows you how weak TOR system was at that time and nothing more. Their #1 prospect wasn't even a top 100 prospect. -

Law always favors Blue Jays prospects...Baseball America has never listed Zach Stewart in their top 100, even before this year's disappointing season. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) Its not even like Frasoer makes a lot of money so they are trying to offset costs. The only argument has been that the Blue Jays are going to then trade Jackson for something, but youd think the Sox would just cut out the middle man. Not when uncle Jerry is requiring KW to trim payroll. -

What a clusterf***. -
Thornton's not exactly comparable to other elite RP, in that he has one and only one good pitch, his fastball. When Father Time knocks a couple ticks off of Matt's fastball, he's going to callapse. He has no secondary pitch that normal elite relievers have.

Sox "uncharacteristically quiet" on trade front
sircaffey replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 23, 2011 -> 05:59 PM) People really underrate Quentin on here, jeez What's wrong with B grade prospects? Getting past the fact Carlos is a poor defender and has sustained an injury in pretty much every year of his professional career, are going to be tough hurtles for a team to get over in order to offer elite talent. -

QUOTE (gosox41 @ Jul 22, 2011 -> 11:40 PM) That will change once the trade deadline gets close. 9 days away. Not sure of all the other hitters and pitchers that are available in trades, but once the first trade is made, other teams will begin to feel the heat to get something done. Bob That won't change. Quentin and Jackson aren't players you give up your top prospects for unless you have the Brewers or WSox system. -
The Sox need to drop the, must have played for the Sox at one point in time, pre-req.

POLL:Gordo, is he breaking out of that season long slump?
sircaffey replied to chisoxfan09's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Actually, I yell at my dog that he s***s better stuff than the cow turds Cowley produces. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) Oh I know that. I was just pointing out that they're basically untouchable. Not that just the Sox couldn't touch them. I don't see the Sox making any moves, really. You can't go to show n tell without something to show. Yeah, I was just adding on to your point.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 12:12 PM) Yup. Miller is a consensus top-5 pitching prospect in baseball right now. Martinez is probably in the top-10. Carpenter is 36 and will be a FA after this season. Wainwright will be coming back from TJ. And Pujols is going to be making $25+ million dollars a year starting in '12. They're not parting with any of their premium cost-controlled talent. This includes Rasmus. Regardless of STL's situations, consensus top 10/15 prospects are traded once in a blue moon. SP prospects in the top 10ish are never traded. It's a pipe dream to get Miller or Martinez.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 11:43 AM) I can't see Martinez or Miller going anywhere, and even if they were available, who would we have to acquire them? No one.
-
I would think even if Axford starts sucking, the Brewers wouldn't allow that option to kick in.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 01:40 PM) I wish more college athletes were like Jared Sullinger regarding staying in school. http://www.foxsportsohio.com/07/06/11/Sull...amp;feedID=9467 He's at Ohio State. He's already in the top tax bracket. -
Definitely mediocre or definitely below average isn't helping this squad.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 11:34 AM) It's roughly the same percentage Ellsbury and Crisp (#3 and #4 in the league leaders) have stolen bases at for the whole season. Who cares.

8 for 11 isn't good.

The Braves want and need to open a space for Teheran, Delgado, and Minor. If they can acquire offense for both Lowe and Beachy, they wouldn't hesitate.

This is going to be a funny thread 5 years from now when the Bulls have 3 rings and Mirotic is an all-star! -

sircaffey replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Mirotic may just serve as trade bait. Selecting him was, in a sense, a way to not use their 1st rd pick. Parlay his rights with future picks + a player or two for someone large....It's potentially genius.
