QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 06:08 PM) If Kenny Williams is actually considering giving hunter 5 years at 90 million, I quit being a sox fan until he gets freaking fired and Hahn takes over as GM. Probably the real reason Hahn didn't get the Cards job. He sees that KW is f***ing up. He used the Cards as leverage. Probably got a bit of a raise this season, and figures he'll take over next season. I wish this was true...

If it has to be, then overpay even more to keep the contract to a 4 year deal instead of 5.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 01:30 PM) Yeah, Id love to get Melky Cabrera... we might need to add something in to make it work. Let them choose from our pen, excluding Jenks, and a prospect. I don't care if we need an arm in the pen.

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 01:53 PM) This I don't buy. Damon may be declining as a CF, but is certainly above average as a LF. Burrell, meanwhile, is in the running for worst defensive player in baseball with Braun and Manny. This is the White Sox. Where do you think Damon will play? Unless Rowand or Hunter are signed along with Damon, Damon is starting in CF. He's an average LF with his pathetic arm.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 11:48 AM) I'd rather have Jerry Owens in CF for $400,000 than Torii Hunter in CF for 40x that amount...but I contend that you can't put Owens in CF if you don't fix your SS spot. Keep Owens in CF, trade for an actual offensive force for LF like Burrell. Then look to use that money on a better free agent crop in '08. Any offensive player in this free agent crop is going to be even more overpaid due to the scarcity of quality players. I know KW is desperate to improve the team, but let's not be stupid. As it stands right now, we dont have much of a chance against the Indians and Tigers anyways. Hunter and Eckstein for a combined $22+ million aren't going to solve all of our problems. They will just create new ones.

KW to make a strong push for Crisp?
sircaffey replied to GreatScott82's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 11:32 AM) Crisp was a good LF'er and #2 hitter for the tribe a few years back. However I would rather have Jerry Owens at min that Coco. Without a doubt. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 12:09 AM) Crisp has $11M left on his deal. Misread the numbers. $4.75 in 2008, $5.75 in 2009. $.5 buyout. Correct. Even better on why not to trade for him. -
You would work for MLB.com with those jobs, not the Sox. But you do work at the stadium, so I guess you could say you work for the Sox. MLB.com offers those jobs for all MLB teams.

KW to make a strong push for Crisp?
sircaffey replied to GreatScott82's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Explain to me why we want Scott Podsednik with better defense at the top of our order? That's exactly what Crisp is. He has no power left evidenced by his pathetic SLG the last 2 seasons. He's been bad. Not average, but bad the past 2 seasons. I'd rather just suggest to JR to save the $9.75 million left on Crisp's contract and use it towards the 2009 payroll because adding Crisp gives us about a .00000001 improved chance of doing anything next season. -
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 06:07 PM) I think the Sox have to go for some not everyone (besides Thome) hitting way below their career averages/their abilities. That alone brings OBP up significantly. They were 8th in MLB in 06. The 2008 White Sox will be a much different team than the 2006 version. The Sox do need to add some OBP. In house improvement won't cut it. Not with Crede, Richar, Pierzynski, and Fields (and perhaps Uribe) likely in the starting lineup. All candidates for a .300 OBP. Dye is unlikely to come close to his 2006 version. In fact, for as poorly as we all say Dye played last season, his OBP was only .012 and .016 lower than his 2004 and 2005 numbers respectively. He was much closer to his career numbers last season than in 2006. With the way this team is shaping up, we'll be putting up a pathetic number in the OBP category. We desperately need some OBP out of at least one of LF, CF, or SS, and most likely 2 of them.

QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) Good point, if you could get Barry for $13 million. The problem is that Barry is about 3/4 of a player at this point; you can't DH him because Thome is there and ALMOST as productive as Barry. Even if you rested Konerko against some tough right handers, you've got somewhat of a "where would he play" problem with Bonds. His LF defense is getting very bad - think sub-Carlos Lee 2003-2005 (Carlos was so awful last year its unbelievable). His ZR is bottoming out, RF is low, assists low, etc. I think Barry Bonds + Jerry Owens for 162 games is not as >> than Johnny Damon as you would think. In any case, I think the Sox HAVE to go for some OBP in the offseason. Carl Crawford is not going to be the solution, nor will Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand. Damon is a pretty bad defender as well. In fact most all LF options discussed on this board are poor defenders (Burrell, Damon, Fields). If we are going to use defense as a major determining factor, then we should want none of them in LF. US Cellular is not a tough OF to play. It's smaller than most OF. If you are going to put a poor defensive LF out there, then you might as well do it with the guy who's going to put up a 1.000+ OPS. I'm not saying I would particularly love Bonds in LF (I'd like it), but if given the choice between him or Damon, I'll take Bonds hands down.
-
I'd rather dump Crede and use Damon's money on Bonds for one season. Damon's name is worth more than his production at this point in his career.
-
Bring in both Bonds and Arod.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 10:30 PM) Well, there's still one more issue though; ballpark size. You might be able to pack in 50,000 to see Alex, and 70,000 to see Alex try to beat Mr. Tetrahydrogestrinone's current record, but there's only so many more tickets that this particular franchise will be able to sell and so much that people will be willing to pay for an ordinary game. Not to say that we can't afford it, but just adding in all the details. If you're looking for the attendence increase to pay for a guy, you have to take into account whether or not the tickets even exist, and with us already hanging out fairly close to capacity, there's not a ton more room right now, depending on how the Season Ticket renewals go. It's not just the tickets sold. It's getting people to use all of their tickets. Concessions is the big issue here. That's where the biggest increase in revenue would come with an attraction like Arod.

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
sircaffey replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 30, 2007 -> 05:39 AM) I guess I should have used green. My point is Crede is hardly washed up. And that Fields may not make huge gains in all categories in 2008. Many rookies have struggled in their 2nd year after the league has solved them. Fields still has some holes in his swing that he needs to correct. IMO, if the sox didn't think Josh would make those corrections down the road, they may want to "sell high" to fill other needs--which was the point of this thread I'm not saying Joe's completely washed up, I'm just saying that he wasn't that good of an offensive player even before the surgery. Fields doesn't need to make major gains to eclipse Joe's best OBP/SLG/HR/RBI totals. Only slight improvements. -
Damon SLG under .400 this season. His defense is terrible. He's obviously on the decline. We don't need to be tied into another declining veteran for the next two seasons, especially anywhere near $13 mil per. Damon is turning into Podsednik.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) No he isn't. He's a well above average defender at 3B but his all around game is more often than not below average. Joe Crede has never been an All Star and by my count he's had a grand total of 1 All Star Caliber season. Even that is very much debatable. I would say he's had no All-Star caliber seasons, and 1 good year.

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
sircaffey replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 29, 2007 -> 04:31 PM) I guess Crede is either all washed up or Fields is bound for the hall of fame. I think Joe has a lot of life left in him and Fields has potential. But if we're talking 2008, they should be pretty even. Pretty extreme there buddy. If they're pretty close next season, then Fields didn't progress at all. Joe's missed near a whole season to go with his major surgery. I don't see how anyone can say with any assurance that he'll match his career year in 2006. Perhaps he'll regain form in 2009, perhaps, but it's going to take time for Joe to find himself. -
$13 mil per for the next 2 seasons. As much as I'd like to trade Crede, not for Damon.

Trading Fields and/or Danks for a star
sircaffey replied to NCsoxfan's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
It's not like Fields is a stiff out there. He's moves pretty good. It's now just a matter of adjustments. He's will improve defensively at either 3B or LF. Prediction: Fields' OBP, SLG, HR total, and RBI total next season will all be higher than anything Joe Crede puts up in a single season for the rest of his career. -
Baez carried with him one of the most overrated aspects of modern day baseball, "the ability to close." Speier's contract is what I'd expect to see Linebrink get. Speier statistically has been better than Linebrink, but with the market being horrendous, Linebrink should get some added value there. IMO, there's no chance Linebrink gets 7-8 mil. I'd say 3-4 years, $5 mil per. With that said, I don't want him.
-
I wonder if park factor will have anything to do with Arod's decision. Even a small part of the decision. It's feasible he could hit an extra 90-100 HR over the rest of his career if he signed with the White Sox over someone like the Angels.
-
Career high .829 OPS. At the hot corner that's extremely average, probably even below average. Joe's had 500 AB (150 G) is only 2 of the last 5 seasons. Now major back surgery, and we're talking long term deal for him? We have a future all-star 3B in Josh Fields at a bare minimum of cost for the next several years. He's 100% healthy, and only going to improve. We don't need to spend $8 mil a year for an injury riddled 3B, who's only going to get worse just because his name is Joe Crede. Also, don't assume Joe's going have the same range and mobility he had before the surgery.

One thing to worry about with Pablo is that his injury was a serious ankle injury. I hate to say it, but if Pablo loses some speed, he almost becomes worthless. Hopefully that won't happen.
-
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Oct 27, 2007 -> 05:38 PM) Pablo is the back up for sure and can play what? 4 positions? My thought for 2B if Richar doesn't develop is Iguchi again. Now maybe Tad can play SS also??? Calm down on the switch guys to positions they can't or haven't played before.
