QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 08:07 PM) Evan Skoug with a .909 babip through his first 2 ab's in Kanny...not a bad way to start his pro career. That math sounds off

Cheers all. Exciting night.

I'm on phone but did anyone read the BP updated report on Giolito? Made me feel better.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 04:17 PM) But sacrificing helps you get accustomed to bunting. You have to suck at something before you can get good at it. I didn't watch the game, but judging from the reactions here, it was apparently a pretty poor attempt. Get to the point where he's making good attempts, and then he can start to bunt for hits. Also, I'm not sure how true it is of professionals, but when I was playing, when I wasn't hitting well, I'd lay down a bunt now and then. It helps keep you locked on the ball longer, allowing you more opportunities to see spin and directing the bat where it needs to go. That can be some of it too. Would you do it with 2 strikes and 2 men on base, 1 in scoring position?

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) The Phillies are so bad, I don't think we can catch them. Giants, on the other hand, hopefully with MadBum, they play a little better. I think we will catch them. We are only beginning our suck. They have gone through the worst IMO. unlikely they even shed many pieces. -
I want to keep Yolmer I decided just now.

QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) My only concern is that Cashman is a smart GM, and really never trades the "wrong guy" so to speak. Not saying Rutherford won't pan out, but it does give me some pause. He may not give up the wrong guy in trades, but he certainly has in rule 5. They've prioritized a lot worse players. Here's to Tito Polo, then.

I think Rick has been going after offensive and player profiles more than position profiles ala "we need more power" " we need more OBP" "We need more speed" etc.
-
I think Angels this is a move they could pull off. Modest cost but they just released Espinoza and Sanchez provides every bit as much defensive value. But I'd like to keep Yolmer.

I think it should have been like *Extreme sarcasm voice* Oh yeah, we're seeing red Would've KILLED -
I'd be fine with Sox signing a defensive catcher who frames well. I think that would be good and helpful.

So Mendick was 2b last night. I'd prefer we not prioritize Eddy over Mendick at SS. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 11:10 AM) I hope his health projects better. Lillian's health, though, would be extraordinary.

How about that hire the Indians made? They hired a guy from the Eagles this offseason who had specialized in creating custom nutrition and sleep plans for players. Stuff like that I know is on Sox radar, Fabian mentioned it at SoxFest, but we don't know if they ever implement it.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 10:14 AM) So there was a discussion this morning on MLB radio in regards to the Dodgers' FO. It is massive. Link They have some really bright minds in their FO which allows them to have multiple perspectives on things - a way of diversifying their portfolio, so to speak. I remember a few years ago making an argument that the White Sox Org should make more investments in instruction and coaching throughout the entire organization. There are areas where investments can be made, which seem like incredibly efficient and wise investments to make, particularly when compared against the costs of player acquisition/retention. Is this something the White Sox could benefit more from? Have they already been doing this? I don't care as much about hiring 15 former GMs as much as getting a lot more people in for player development, nutrition coaching, more people like Santiago for helping with transitioning to new living/culture/language etc. and more scouts.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 09:58 AM) So Brian Cashman was just on MLB radio and actually said he and Kenny hammered this deal out. He is very proud of his system and mentioned that often times other GMs will ask about some of his top guys, and he said he has to try and make it clear, that because of the depth of his system, oftentimes his 8-12 might be more equivalent to another team's 1-5. Other GMs don't want to hear that when he is trying to take guys like Torres and Mateo and Rutherford off the table. Sounds like they really wanted Quintana. We must have been asking for Torres and Rutherford or something. Oh no, if Blake fails we are never going to hear the end of how it was a Kenny move.

I wouldn't say there's nothing to get excited about. He is only striking out 18% of the time, and walking a little over 8% of the time. The glaring part is power. And he is hitting doubles, he doesn't appear to be hitting a Collins amount of groundballs either. It is just power. But if the power never comes he's useless. But it'd be worse if it was no power, no discipline.

I'm not close to calling out Hostetler, but am just dying for some drafted position prospect that breezes through. Maybe that's Burger.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) The Sox now have likely the best farm in all of baseball. But the previous iterations of development of minor leaguers provides a note of caution. Regardless, the system is so much better now than any time in the recent past. A look at the juxtaposition. Great article. There is a lot to like around what's happening. But, looking at our first round picks since 2013 Anderson Rodon Fulmer Collins / Burdi Burger The last 2 -- that's Hostetler. And I think in terms of actual performance you'd say it's actually very good to have 2 1st round picks in the majors. But it's nagging at me a bit that this is the best draft position over 5 years we've ever had and they are still only hypothetical foundation pieces. The other thing, pretty negative nancy I know, but we now have the 2 bats we rated highest (maybe, we'll never know) from 2016. Maybe we have no idea about Senzel or whatever, but of the players we supposedly targeted. I just wish those bats were destroying the A levels before being tested. That their natural hitting ability was challenged so early is just a little nervewrecking to me. I'm not saying BUST or FAILURE yet, more that I just wish we could have some dudes that we draft that just rip through it all to ease anxiety around player dev. Like a Sale

It just feels like every contending teams outfield is awesome though.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) The closest comp to him I see on this thread is probably younger Markakis...I think Sizemore is too fast for Rutherford and Abreu/Heyward have too much pop I'm not too big on Rutherford but I suppose his ceiling is a 15-20 homer/.280 guy with 10-15 steals, RF of course...I just don't see him on our future Series roster, Clarkin on the other hand I could see as a backend of the rotation guy or 'pen piece at worst and Polo has a ceiling of a backup OFer, both closer to the Show If he is actually a .280/20/15sb guy it won't matter if he's our WS roster guy, he may be the reason we some other roster series pieces.
