  1. Like no one here would seriously say “we should trade Colson Montgomery to get rid of Grandals contract” we’d say like maybe Jose Rodriguez
  2. Baty is very good. You don’t get a player like that just taking on $10 mil
  3. I’ll say this, if Sox trade Hendriks for baty+McCann+Escobar I will eat a hat. And I’ll be happy about it
  4. Fairly certain the Mets don’t view excess as a problem.
  5. Yeah definitely seems like the Mets care about McNeils $6 mill gtfo
  6. I gotta say the fact that angels signed him makes me think he’ll be bad.
  7. We are paying Leury just $3M a year less for -150000 year he production
  8. Ugh!!! Bummer that’s less than I thought!
  9. yeah this was unfair to do, I think both him and perez look much better with some more time.
  10. Great article: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/steven-kwan-geraldo-perdomo-and-the-victor-robles-problem/ Money line: So I put together some notable sox young players, added Nick madrigal as a low bench mark for reference. That last column is coming from here, but keep in mind for both Carlos Perez and Lenyn they had so few balls in play they were below any threshold set in this article. But I included them because I was already on the page. Sox young'ns old'ns Some things that are interesting. Danny Mendick was great last year, but it's unlikely he repeats his very nice .350 babip with how weakly he hits again. He's a nice guy though and i'm fine taking his rehab case on Jake Burger hits the ball really, really hard. I kinda wish we'd just let him go to the pirates. I really think he can hit. Seby being in that 97-104 range is kinda nice. Exactly what he kinda looked like. Obviously takeaway here is Romy hits the ball hard and gets above that 40 BIP threshold. With time, ideally it gets him to nicer production. Fun thing here is this is what the chart looks like if I include James Outman's 6 Balls in Play LOL.
  11. Yeah and the stuff I mentioned isn't even stuff that really talks about "receiving". I just think it has been noticeable how much other catchers get praise from the pitchers for game calling, and how rarely any pitcher has said they want grandal as their personal catcher. McCann sucks but man, it was noticeable his sequencing. He did some beautiful stuff especially early with Giolito in helping him believe in that weird high change.
  12. he had a 105 wRC+ the year prior with 11 home runs in 70 games and a .250 iso. He hits the ball hard, would be second in catchers in Barrels per PA and 6th in hard hit %. And man, he does NOT hit the ball on the ground. Would be super welcome here. only 33.5% grounders.
  13. I don't really know what's happening and can't imagine hahn having the work ethic to resolve both having grandal and getting a catcher, but, in isolation, I DO see why sox are still fixated on catcher.
  14. I'm just saying if you try to dump salary you typically start on the higher salary players not the lower, affordable players. Mcneil would be pretty far down the list for them unless we consume mccann for the pleasure.
  15. it is this reason why I think sox try to do a grandal/perez swap
  16. not too many catchers sitting around free agency coming off a 140 wRC+ season...no He would have led our team in wRC+ and slugging and like 3rd in home runs despite only playing 77 games.
  17. It is but it is also why I do not particularly care for people using fangraphs defense stats for catchers while we are at the same time loathe to have grandal on roster. But the reason why I still like salvy is his arm is still strong and the pitchers still revere him and even as Yadi molina's defensive metrics fell off a cliff nobody really believed it.
  18. Jeff Mcneil doesn't make very much thou. MLB Trade rumors estimates 6.3MM. Definitely less than the 10MM escobar makes. You know what's more likely all.
  19. uh, ok I think I talked myself into jansen. The post about carlos perez and how his caught stealing rate went from near 50% to 28% in AAA this year kinda freaked me out with how bad this pickoff rule stuff may affect our staff. Jansen was top 15 in Baseball Prospectus' Throwing metric for catchers (combining their all their AA metrics) and Top 10 in blocking. On the other hand, you might say that because white sox pitchers were SO bad at keeping runners close or bothering to speed up their delivery, that we have already dealt with the downsides of this rule and we will see the least drop off. Maybe danny jansen will suck after moving to pitchers who seem unaware that there are baserunners. But probably not. Anyway fun thing about Jansen is framing hates his numbers so Grandal rates above him.
  20. trying to fit that hendriks will include toronto in no trade clause because it would put him back under the english monarchy
  21. Martin did what he did because he had a velo increase. If it's still there next year there's no reason to call it a flash in the pan. Not particularly novel to see a pitcher make a sudden leap in stuff.
  22. I wish, I mostly just get to follow @DirtySox on minor league nights while i get my kids ready for bed. Defensively I'm not sure I could evaluate a catcher either, mostly just notice when things go bad. However, I have tried to find this answer and it feels like getting defensive evaluations out of scout writers for catcher is like pulling teeth. I emailed BA after a prospect writeup with Perez where the only defensive mention was that the sox liked his defense asking for their own evaluation. They responded "the piece mentions the sox thinking his defense plays" and I responded that the sox said that about Zach Collins and they never responded. The early writeups on his defense when he was 17-18 all mentioned it as a strength, now it's hardly mentioned, which probably means its average but could be worse. As I mentioned earlier, there was some reports with Cueto down there that it dramatically improved Perez's game calling, which may mean it was bad and may be why he's passed over a lot in getting time up here. He was much better holding runners before AAA, routinely at 40% or above, now at just 28% in AAA. However, that may be a sign that the new pick-off rules may really pressure catchers. To be honest, this may be a reason sox freaked out and went after Murphy. If Michael kopech lets anyone on they will be on third base. Passed Balls look fine, but a lot of catchers that are bad at passed balls look fine if you only look at stats. So basically I have no idea what we'll get. Usually defense for catchers is mentioned when they are bad hitters or truly good at it or a top prospect. Perez is in that murky middle, and when we only have notes from the white sox, it's never good.
