Your 2023 Off-Season Plan
We definitely need more all stars. We don’t need to pay for a .700 ops 2nd baseman with average d.

Your 2023 Off-Season Plan
So romy looked more like a big leaguer after having been in mlb before and repeating AAA than the guy who jumped from AA and was 4 years younger? Color me shocked.

I feel like colts loss was good for us so I was happy.

Good for cubs but that sure looks silly after being in on the others. Always a bad idea to pass on a deal for top stars and still commit to bringing in anyone. Is the $5 mill a year saved going to be worth it?

Billy Hamilton to Sox as NRI, minor league deal per Merkin
Keep hating. Billy will just run faster.

Your 2023 Off-Season Plan
Not sure what they use but I’ve always enjoyed this article. Has led me to focus on bp for infield, baseball savant for OF. https://www.draysbay.com/platform/amp/2020/4/15/21219514/mlb-defense-best-statistic-baseball-prospectus

Your 2023 Off-Season Plan
So basically it’s small samples. So he probably isn’t good. But baseball savant has him at just not negative at 2B, and DRAA (bp) has him bad at 3B but positive at 2B. So yes I wouldn’t place bets on him being good but I do hope he could be avg. Say a split of 30% he’s bad, 50% avg, 20% good at 2B. He does look s%*# in OF though

Why do you say that? His defense on baseball savant looks serviceable.

Hell yes! Love players that love baseball

That’s probably true (though I’d be surprised if he gets a straight third year) but also not so high that it’s like, unbelievable.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
Eh, matches pollocks 14?

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
It’s not so much about upgrading catcher, it was about adding an all star who may still be getting better and not caring as much about position. Great players, ones that are strong both offensively and defensively, paper over a lot. And he was like the one great player I could have seen Sox feasibly adding. I don’t really see another one available. That said, of soxtalk favs now, getting varsho I’d be a big fan of. And re: outman, I think it makes even more sense to get these guys now, but more with seeing if they can be gotten via supplying younger prospects in potential 3 team deals. Rosenthal suggested a rumored cards/dodgers trade for Dylan Carlson, so maybe that would open up an outman (though cements nootbar).

2023 MLB offseason signings and rumors thread
This is off topic but was just watching pitching ninja highlights of Pedro martinezs change up. So many old players do not pass the eye test, but holy hell Pedro will be an immortal. Any era, anywhere he dominates. So fortunate to have been at that game with the tremendous 13 pitch battle between him and Big Frank. One of the highlights of my baseball fandom.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
Would be hilarious if the real answer was “we don’t have to, but we are going to to gain favor for some future flexibility”.

Colas is Exciting
And on that note, I’m a big believer in Cespedes defense. Really hope he’s out in the work on pitch selection, I think he’ll be an awesome reserve OF.

Colas is Exciting
What is colas range? I’m sold on colas offense, I’m most scared about potentially bad defense just because it feels like we’ve had very little understanding of that as guys came up. We’d heard madrigal would be an all star, he was below average. We heard Eloy would be average, he was horrendous. We heard Robert would be a star and that was correct. When it’s not billed as a strength it feels like a real box of chocolates.

Sincerely happy there.

Your 2023 Off-Season Plan
Of surprise signings I’d be stoked about, I really like Brandon drury. Surprisingly competent at 2B, had 28 homers last year. You are buying it for real but…cheaper than if it was for real. He can also play RF until colas, and let us see if any of romy/Sosa are ready. Likelihood of pumpkin status looks large, but he has highest ceiling imo of inf left at potentially realistic prices.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
He was basically a DH when he returned so can’t be a shock to him. And he raked. 54 out of 84 games at DH.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
I also extremely want to sign Tyler danish back. If we can’t have Rodon we need danish back.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
I’ll never stop believing that Aaron Sanchez will be good. He’ll be like 50 and I’ll want to sign him. He’s my new folty, who was my new Danny Salazar, who was my new Henderson Alvarez

What should the club do about catcher?
I’m extreeeemely team see what you have. Zavala was much better than I expected, Perez can hit the upside too. Barnhart had a 64 wRC+ v lefties and 62 vs righties. My mans, Carlos Perez can match that.

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
It’s true this is the best of the situation, just obnoxious the solution is always “well sort the free agent list by left field and see who we can sign”

Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M
Listen: - I’m happy that the Sox aren’t just going to pocket $30 million to pay back shareholders for 2020. - I’m happy that outfield defense is not compromised and Eloy is not going back. - I think his defense is being underrated and overrated. I think there are some extremely weird effects of measuring green monster stuff in Boston. In two years since, seems like he’s neutral. Totally fine. Upgrade for Sox from deep underwater to sea level, but our outfield defense hasn’t moved to a strength yet. The lack of power is a huge issue for me. We left the Astros series seeing us fail offensively in two games where we had tons of hits. The only game we scored enough was led by power. They signed Josh Harrison. Last year we routinely strung games with LOTS of hits, all singles, and a terrible offense. Add Benintendi. This org is power starved. It is priced out of power in all positions except 1B/DH, and it can’t add there because it has a bunch of 15 home run hitting 1B/DH. This is where you all see me saying weird things like I was pro going after Sean murphy and not liking benintendi. He flips catcher to being top 5 offensively and defensively. But Benintendi was to 5 in LF wRC+ last year. It’s a real upgrade. It cost just money. All that is good. I just can’t stand outfielders that can’t send it to the seats unless they are elite defensively.
