This is making me so mad, I'm going to scarf down handfuls of GMO grain right now.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 10:45 AM) I don't fall into that camp. I think people who don't vaccinate are abusing their children. However, I also have a hard time punishing the children, which is what happens when doctors stop admitting them as patients and they can't go to school. That said, I don't want my kids going to a school where half the kids are vaccinated (I'm making an extreme example here, however, there are certain schools where I live where they are pretty close to this level). Damn yuppies. But that's not an extreme example! In that NYT article there are schools in California with about that ratio of unvaccinated. And I understand "punishing the kids", but it's not like they just can't get a vaccine for the rest of their lives.

Super Bowl Halftime and Commercials
With so many commercials trying to capitalize by creating an emotional resonance with the company now, it was bound to hit a tipping point. It was almost a relief when the super glue commercial was actually putting their product front and center.

The nationwide commercial provided so many funny memes that I'm not even mad. And the stuff about "all publicity is good publicity", no, having worked at a company that had backlash to their superbowl ads, it puts a lot of pressure on leadership to answer questions and justify why they spent so much on an ad that created negative publicity. Hell, that ad wasn't even selling a product, it was "creating awareness about child safety". It amazes me this stuff gets out without red flags.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 09:42 AM) Jenny McCarthy had an autistic son and instead of embracing his condition she claims it happened because of a vaccine and went on a media campaign to make people not vaccinate. I have to say though, I had no idea how big this "movement" had become. 10% of the population is 33 million people. That's insane.

I think if you make a pass call there, a fade to chris matthews makes more sense. There's a reason fades are popular goal line calls, they aren't crazy successful but very rarely do they get a turnover. But a slant over the middle when it's so crowded just is that dangerous.

Vaccinations
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 2, 2015 -> 09:24 AM) It seems to cut across the political spectrum. You've got everything from anti-gmo, everything-organic holistic herbal remedies in tune with nature Whole Foods crowd to the "f*** you, I got mine, I don't owe society nothin'" types to the "fluoridation is a communist plot!" Birch conspiracy theory types. Plus a lot of generally apolitical and otherwise well-meaning people who have been duped by frauds into believing vaccines cause autism etc. It's quite remarkable the circular logic. I do think the "vaccination deaths" are a huge part of some well-meaning parents who decided not to (And hopefully now are). But another, almost hysterical pushback, is the claim I've seen that the measles aren't that big of a deal (nor is whooping cough) and this is all CDC hype. So in other words, a negligible amount of chemicals applied once to your child is the end of the world, but MEASLES is not a big deal.

Vaccinations
I don't think it's libertarians particularly, but there is something alarming about the complete absence of societal responsibility. When you won't even perform an act that will not only prevent sickness in yourself, but the most vulnerable, then there is a deep schizm right now that will be hard to repair.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Feb 1, 2015 -> 10:34 PM) Yeah, McNair brought his team back from the dead. Much respect there. To me, that was the first great Super Bowl. Every previous one I saw was a blowout. Rams vs Patriots was good as was Patriots vs Panthers, Steelers vs Seahawks, Saints vs Colts, NY vs NE, SF vs Baltimore, and of course this year. These youngins don't know how bad super bowls used to be prior to 99. Pitt v AZ was my favorite super bowl

Jeff Samardzija contract extension?
I can't imagine the nerves involved there, knowing any injury may be the difference between you and 100 million.

Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment
SSS had a good article about PECOTA this year, namely it does not think much of the AL Central. The good news is it sees us about 4 games behind the tigers, who are only pegged for 82-80. If you think the sox projection is bad, imagine being a royals fan, whom it pegged at 72-90. I thought seeing the central it may be inherently negative this year, but the Dodgers are at 97 wins, which is pretty high by pecota standards.

at this point we are mostly dealing with their attorney, who luckily specializes in short sales.

Have you noticed the difference?
OT i know, is there a thread discussing PECOTA projections this year?

Apartment/Condo/House Thread
Forgot about this thread. We are in the middle of a short sale purchase. When we started looking for houses, I did not seek out a short sale by any means. We put in an offer on a house that had been on market for a while and it was accepted, but it put it at a price requiring bank approval. Lots of waiting so far. We actually paid for a home inspection right away, as we didn't want to be tied down for months to find out it required a new foundation which would obviously be ours to pay. That said, very excited, but also trying to put it out of my mind for another 30-45 days. Question for Home improvement stuff. If you start acquiring tools, do you get pretty brand loyal? I want to use a gift card to buy a handheld jigsaw tool, but feel like as soon as you buy one with a battery you are going to buy them all. With that in mind, is there a good quality/value brand people swear by?

BR ranks the top 10 front line rotations in MLB
Lance Lynn is someone who I just irrationally probably feel like would be a failure in AL. It's also remarkable how good his stats are compared to the handwringing about him from the cardinals fan base.

eh, football hall of fame is stupid anyway. But Bettis was way more memorable than most RBs of the late 90s/early 00s. Gore will not have a few more 1000 yard seasons. He was an amazing story, in that he barely played in college due to so many injuries but was still an incredible prospect. He may not have had many pro injuries but he is not someone built to go beyond his 30s successfully.
