  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) We couldn't even come together for an olympic bid. There is no way they would come together on something huge anymore, unless it became necessary. I'm starting to believe tex, that things have changed, and we're all ready to tear each other down. Can't really believe the fighting that occurred over trying to secure the olympics. I mean, to give this forum credit, i haven't really seen fights in here spread out of this forum. I think it's agreed we all generally like each other as posters, and don't lend a whole bunch of creedance to political philosophy as a mark of character. But it's starting to really feel like a person's politics are now entirely defining. It's getting annoying. I'm not one of those people that leaves America and comes back "oh my god it's so much better in xx". In fact one of the things I like about Brazil is the similarities in personalities to America, which i find the west in general has a lot in common with each other. I really wanted Chicago to get it because I love Chicago and love to see it's skyline everywhere, films, sports, etc. And I'd love for the US to get a chance to show off a city like Chicago. And i'd love for us to make a huge leap with an exploration like the moon landing was. We really need something to rally around. And if it's a god damn war I swear it proves we are on a path that's hard to uproot ourselves from.
  2. QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:25 PM) Since when was anyone talking about the Monday night game that you had to come into the thread and bring your s*** opinion in? Tired of seeing all the s*** posts like this ragging on GB, we get the point, you don't think they are that good. I don't think the Bears are that good but I don't say jack s*** about them, no. What do you expect, Favre is the best player in the game and he is playing his former team. Anything beats watching ESPN hype the stupid Cowboys and their stadium, bit sick of hearing analysts talk about how good that team is and Jerry Jones and the gang. I think the Monday night game "might" be close, do I expect GB to win, no, but I would be stoked if they do, but I wasn't expecting them to win wk 1 or even lose wk 2. The game ultimately hinges on both teams offensive lines as they are not that great. Who knows, emotions can change the game, Favre I'm sure would like to beat GB and I'm sure GB would love to stick it to Favre. You're on a chicago sports team's message board.
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) We should do another World's Fair. 1893 was pretty badass. Best idea of the thread.
  4. You really should separate Summer from Winter olympics. But, it's getting kind of old, Europe getting all these Olympics.
  5. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:53 PM) So what is Chicago's future in all this. Do they ever make a bid again or was this a one time thing? it'll probably be a while. Pisses me off that Atlanta can secure an olympic bid and we can't. Atlanta sucks.
  6. QUOTE (Nixon @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:48 PM) That definitely put them over the top I think. The prime minister's presentation was also very good and not in the same rah rah rah go team vein as all the other heads of state. I think 85% of the infrastructure for this would already be in place too, though Brazil's big stadium will be renovated for World Cup 2014 so I suspect all of that will be up to snuff in time too. I do wonder if Brazil's estimate is 15 bill, if that's realistic, or if it's going to balloon. They have a ton of infrastructure work to do. They have a ton of cleaning up to do. It's going to be interesting. Luckily for Brazil, they kind of just faced zero growth as opposed to a dip in the recession. They were poised pretty well through this debacle besides a minor currency crisis.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:47 PM) You're just a homer for Spain. LOL i forgot about that.
  8. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:45 PM) Olympic Profit > Helping the lowly poor. How do you draw this conclusion? This profit, this money, even if at net even, would've put a lot of money in a lot of blue collar workers pockets.
  9. Now, I'll be absolutely FURIOUS if RIo doesn't get it. The Eastern Hemisphere does not need another summer olympic games.
  10. QUOTE (Nixon @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) I think a lot of credit goes to Madrid's bid making this difficult rather than any deficiency in the American bid. Directly put, if you are European you'll be in the finals no matter what.
  11. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:40 PM) Yay, Daley won’t get to feed even more corruption into the city that might not have been able to sustain the Olympics anyway! I f***ing love Chicago, but we need to be realistic here. Politically, we’re corrupt to the core. If Chicago can't sustain the olympics, none of those cities can. A lot of outside people come in to plan the olympics, and despite examples of people going OVER budget, there really hasn't been examples of corruption crippling any of these processes. Frankly, Chicago isn't that corrupt.
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) Still he's going to take a political hit for this one. I don't think i could roll my eyes more. The iranians just shipped a f load of uranium back to get re enriched in russia at lower levels IN ONE DIPLOMATIC MEETING, and because the olympics didn't come to chicago his approval will go down. GIVE ME A BREAK.
  13. YAY!! oh man yay!!! thousands of jobs won't be created in the city you live in the midst of a recession!!! The city we all love can't be put on a stage for the whole world to see!! Glorious day!!!
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) Tell me how you think Chicago's corruption with the Olympics is going to effect you. Affect
  15. Brazil's government is a mess. For all the praising of Lula he has no idea how to balance the obvious breaks and benefits they should be giving to their growing business with the social institutions they've set up. Everything is underfunded, their public schools are terrible, their health care is terrible, etc. To his credit, he's one of the best diplomats heading a south american country. Anxious to see what he does with this Honduran crisis. I assure you, if you think the US government is bad, nay, if you think the city gov'ts of the US are poorly run, you have no idea. Absolutely none. Do you all want to know what it's like to find your way around a gigantic city, not on a grid, with below average transit system? It's not easy.

Yes, because Kanye is the bats*** insane one of the two.
  17. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) The results are about what I expected. Sad isn't it? We cannot rally for good, we can only rally against evil. Well, I think there needs to be some sort of competition, don't you? There was such moral grounds, a definitive good vs. evil, to keep you on your toes. I'd like to see us get to mars first, but obviously, mars just seems so out there in terms of possibilities. Granted, the moon probably felt like that.
  18. Man, it would really set us up well if Viciedo pans out. Hope he really settles in next year.
  19. My friend worked the Beijing Olympics. She said 20 minutes before breaking, I believe his own, world record, Hussain Bolt was eating a 20 pc chicken nuggets, goes out with his shoe untied and breaks it. God I'd love to see him run. edit: This is just an olympics story, Don't really expect him to be as fast 8 years from the last, but whatever.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) Not a chance. Unless something crazy is going on that we don't know about, this is a blip on the radar. Crazy huh, what kind of acts you have in mind ss2k5...
  21. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) In a perfect world, yes. However, there are no really ideal candidates in the 1st round of next year’s draft. There’s a lot of pitching, and a lot of good High School infield bats, but that’s about it, right now. Ahhh. Damn. I was hoping there were some Smoak clones.
  22. well now he can run for gov/senate
  23. Do you guys see us going for a powerhitting 1b in the draft?
