Official Twinkies Suck Thread
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:45 AM) "People close to Bret Boone have been told by the Seattle Mariners second baseman that the Twins would be his first choice if he is traded or becomes a free agent, as expected. Boone, 36, always has been impressed by the way the Twins play and that they have been in the playoffs three consecutive years. Boone believes he would be a terrific fit and would be greatly motivated to play for the Twins." -benmaller.com Him and Juan Rincon could be best friends.

Let It Be Known
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:40 AM) Great post as you've mentioned a few things I'm sure a lot of us were thinking. Redman really is a guy I'd love to have. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but he should also have some post-season expierence should he not? However, I don't know if we can paint with a broad brush and say the longer you have to wait to make a trade, the harder it is to pry certain players away. In fact, I'd have to argue it's the opposite--at least some of the time. If Kenny were to go ahead and try to trade for that coveted starter now, he would have a much more difficult time that waiting until the deadline when some teams may be looking to sell. It's like Hawk said, now, it's all about patience and waiting for exactly the right moment to make the deal. I think the days of the drastic fire-sale may be few and far between. With teams like Col, Pit, TB, Cin, etc. looking towards the future with a pretty good core of young guys--acquire via PAST deadline moves--they may not be looking to sell save nasty contracts, free agents, and such. Redman's era the last 4 years: 4.21 3.59 4.71 3.76 Can you guess which two years were in the al??

Let It Be Known
QUOTE(TheDybber @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:35 AM) The other interesting thing about this year is that the teams that have been the sellers recently, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Detroit and to a lesser extent Baltimore, Toronto and Cleveland, are all closer to contending this year or down the road with the prospects they've received. So no one knows if they are going to trade players or keep them. Mark Redman is a great example. I would love to get this guy. He has finally learned how to pitch, but do the Pirates want to lose him. They have the makings of a pretty good rotation with him, Wells, Van Bent...Bento...you know the guy. And a good nucleus with Jason Bay, Craig Wilson, Jack Wilson and Mackowiak. I know Kenny likes to make a big splash early, but it makes me nervous because teams are probably going to wait longer which means it will take more to pry a player away. The easiest teams to pry someone away from would be KC, Colorado and Tampa Bay...but are there any players on Colorado or TB that we would want? Mark Redman is a perfect example of prospering from the national league. He's a very good pitcher in the nl and an average pitcher in the al.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:25 AM) The count pitched better last night, but lets not go overboard here before we declare him ready for the 2nd half. This guys MO for years has been he looks great against crappy teams, then craps the bed against good teams. He will face the RedSox this month. Lets see what he does against them. I still am not comfortable with him starting any playoff games. I've said before I'm perfectly fine with him being the 4th starter and he's a pretty damn good 4th starter but I wouldn't want him being a playoff starter either.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:19 AM) Contreras wasn't THAT good last night. He left a lot of pitches over the plate that the Rays failed to do things with. A better team would have parked 2-3 more balls. His command was mildly better but it was a shaky performance. Maybe, but lets not forget that the drays aren't a bad hitting club. Anyways, because of Jose's stuff when he's throwing fastballs and getting ahead in the count he can get away with plenty of mistakes.

I figured people would have trouble knowing which was which

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:12 AM) I never said it was a good or bad idea. I know, I wasn't directing that comment at you, just putting across my opinion. I'll guarantee you though that he's not traded, how 'bout that.

QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:13 AM) Who on this team is not signed for 2006? Garland, but he goes through Arbitration Konerko AJ Anyone else? EDIT: I am also in the "Don't get a elite starting pitcher unless the price is dirt cheap" camp AJ is arbitration eligible as well. Carl and Frank have options that won't be picked up though Frank will most likely get a reworked contract. Politte has a option that will be picked up. Shingo's a free agent and that would be it my friend.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:01 AM) Guardado was part of some great "chemistry" teams when he was with Minnesota. I really would be surprised if he became a cancer. Make him the closer and have Hermanson , Politte , Marte and Cotts handle the 7th and 8th. When Buerhle, Garland and Garcia start you would have to love the White Sox chances. You would have to love the Sox chances at least half of Contreras' and El Duque's starts. If another starter were also acquired..........Was it mentioned what it would take to acquire Guardado? Hermy is the closer and that's his job until he loses it.

shhh...the sox are quietly starting to score more
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:02 AM) Since June 1st we have 9 losses in 31 games. 3 of those we have scored 4+ runs. In 2 out of our 22 wins we scored less than 4. So only 8 out of the last 31 games we have scored less than 4 runs. Our 22 wins have gone like this starting with last night.... 7,6,10,5,6,4,2,12,5,5,11,4,5,6,12,8,4,15,2,9,6,6 Overall we score 4.84 runs per game, but since June we are averaging 5.58 runs per game. The best team is Boston at 5.58 and Baltimore is 2nd at 4.97. If we can keep hitting and scoring like this we will be at the top in runs as well as ERA. That spells good news for the most important stat............W's. Welcome back Frank!!!!! Frank, the end.

At least its not Timo
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 06:59 AM) Interesting that the players and coaches voted him #2. I tend to believe the player votes more than the fan votes. It is impossible to compare player contracts. When Lee signed his, he wasn't an All-Star. Do you think if he was negotiating today he would have the same contract? Plus each contract goes through stages where players are under paid then over paid. It is rare when a contract exactly matches what a player is "worth". The players do the same thing as the fans, look at names more then what they're actually doing that season, as evident by pudge rodriguez. Anyways, we've been over this, Pauly made the team because first base is such a weak position this year in the al.

TRADE THREAD II ~ July 2 - July 8
QUOTE(quickman @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 08:37 AM) Cotts pitched two night in a row. AZ scouting, good trade bait for a starter. Not trying to start anything so please everyone calm down. He's young, pitching well, and the Sox are looking for a starter and AZ looking for bullpen help. Trading Neal is a terrible idea. He's not going anywhere.

Bobby Jenks
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 08:51 AM) Right...come on-its not like it was Tommy-john or anything. He is throwing the ball fine in his rehab, and is gaining velocity. You dont think he has the ability to close games? All it takes it two fastballs and a splitter. It's a different mind set, it's a different position, you just can't be certain about it either way.

Bobby Jenks
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 08:31 AM) Very true. He's getting roughed up at Pawtucket. Pssh, you can't get Ross Gload out. But yeah, even if Schilling becomes John Smoltz which is far from a guarantee they have 2 reliable guys then in him and Timlin but nothing else. We have so much depth in the pen right now it's nuts.

Around The Majors
QUOTE(Spiff @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 08:41 AM) Astros have won 4 straight, Cubs have lost 6 straight, which means Houston is now in second in the Central and 5.5 out of the wild card, with 4 NL East teams ahead of them. W L Pct GB Atlanta 47 37 .560 - Florida 43 39 .524 3 Philadelphia 43 42 .506 4.5 NY Mets 42 42 .500 5 Houston 41 42 .494 5.5 The Astros are coming, it's hard to count those guys out with the top 3 in their rotation.

Brooks pitches well again
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 12:40 AM) No doubt about it. I'm talking about power arm of course. Lummy has an outstanding fastball with some good movement on it. Gio has the better curve, but I have more questions about Gio than most. Of course they are mainly because of potential durability problems, but I also think he needs to be careful that he doesn't rely too much on the curve because at the major league level hitters won't chase his curve and he'll have to be able to spot his fb and change (which I've heard are pretty good at times). The thing that kills me about Lummy is he's barely been healthy since joining the org. This is just my random opinions. I also happen to think Sean Tracey has the best arm in the org this side of Bobby Jenks (in terms of minor league prospects). Thanks. I'm interested to see what Lumsden can do when he gets back. Hopefully when he gets back he can stay healthy.

Brooks pitches well again
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 12:33 AM) 04 was a good draft. Only pick I hated and still hate was the Whisler pick. I've seen him pitch and he has the ability to throw a lot of pitches and he's got a good arm, but I just don't see any one real good pitch nor does he have the command. Of course he's in the lower levels for a reason and everyone knew he was raw. I know the Sox like his potential a lot and I guess we will see. The guy I probably like the most of that draft class pitching wise is Lumsden. He's got the best left handed arm in the system when healthy. Looking forward to a week or two from now when he rejoins the bullpen and eventually a rotation. I have not seen Tyler pitch but he has a better arm then Gio??

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 12:31 AM) I guess you could say that. But he said Jenks used a Change up which he doesn't have. Don't correct me b****! I'll correct you if I want ass But you're right he doesn't throw a change.
