  1. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) I will just throw this out there. IMO, it will be a HUGE mistake if we trade Cotts unless we got something stellar in return. Agree completely. I don't want Clemens at all to be honest, he'd be an over 4 era pitcher here probably around 4.3. I love the idea of Jamie Walker especially for Ozzie. IMO it'd be a mistake to trade Mark unless we get a can't miss package, Freddy is the one that needs to go imo, Mark's the last starter I want to trade. I'd absolutely love Michael Young and Ozzie loves the guy as well so I wouldn't be surprised if we go after him hard and we match up pretty decently with Texas. I also have no problem with Pierre or Roberts playing left and leading off as long as it's for a decent price.
  2. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 07:56 PM) Yuck, 23-12, SIU at half. Hope Tatum is back before Orlando. 59 to 28 final. Not as bad as it sounds offensively. Honestly, the offense flowed so much more than last year and there were actually players besides TY who wanted to be aggressive on the offensive side of things. This offense will be a lot better than last season, I'll tell you that right now. Tony Boyle was very impressive tonight, he looks so much more fluid than last. It'll be nice to actually have some depth in the front court this year so Randal and Matt can actually take some breaks. Overall, wasn't the prettiest game but I came out pretty excited about this upcoming season. And before someone says "It was a d3 team," yes I know but you had to see the difference between last year and todays game in terms of aggressiveness in our players. Very nice to see. EDIT: Two other things, the offense only ran a few set plays today, otherwise it was just the motion, we're saving the play usage for real competition I guess. And Tatum is back next sunday against Murray State.

    QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!! I am soooooo excited to see this one! Ditto.
  4. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 9, 2006 -> 07:47 AM) I see a 6'11 recruit for SIU and I smile. Always have lacked legit height. Evans will probably redshirt next season but yes it's nice to see some height come in here. Fay is the real deal, I wouldn't be surprised at all if at some point next season he's starting.
  5. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 04:17 PM) To you. Which is all that mattered to you before the season started. I prefer a team that stays competitive over the long haul. That's not to say the Sox won't be competitive without Young, but they'd be in a much better position going forward, and there's no denying that. I believe that a combination of McCarthy + El Duque (with Haeger potentially in the mix) could have given us what Vazquez gave the 2006 White Sox. You apparently don't feel the same way. You're looking at this short sighted bud. It's actually very possible by trading for Vazquez we made ourselves better for the future as well. We'll see what happens with Vaz but at least it looks like he turned some type of corner, hopefully he can be an above average starter next season. But that's not really what I'm talking about when I say that trade could have made us better for the future. There is a pretty decent possibility I'd say that we could get a better package for one of our starters right now than what the DBacks got for Vaz. Obviously we dont know yet what Kenny is going to get back in return but if we could land a package like Milledge and Pelfrey/Humber(not saying we're going to get that but there is a decent shot we can get a package like that) then all the sudden we've landed two elite prospects while giving up one for Vaz. By adding this depth to the rotation, Kenny has made this team better for the present and the future.
  6. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 12:45 AM) Browsing several internet sites earlier and came upon a scenario I've been dreading. http://www.gothambaseball.com/news/1162844521.php If Bonderman is offered on the same market as Garcia, it's not even close -- any reasonable team would rather give up top talent for Bonderman. I understand the Tigers are seeking infield options in return for Bonderman, but they'd be foolish to pass up on Pelfrey. His presence within our division is about enough to make me vomit with rage. We need Minaya desperate, and FAST. Bonderman must either be traded to another club or given confidence by Detroit he'll remain. Zito/Schmidt must be signed rather quickly by other teams across the league. DAMMIT! Why can't a team just slip up for once when dealing with us and overpay for one of our players!!11? What Detroit is doing right now is exactly what Williams should have done last offseason: shop pitchers at peak value in a market where quality starting pitchers aren't readily available. I'll continue saying it -- not trading any SP last year after obtaining Vazquez was a HUGGGEEE mistake. Aside from McCarthy, whom was expected to replace the departed pitcher. Any reasonable person would have guessed reaching the levels of which Buehrle/Contreras/Garland/Garcia reached would have been unlikely to occur again. It's almost as if Dombrowski is learning from our mistakes. While Bonderman certaintly can be expected to improve, statistically, it was by far his best overall season. Similar to our starters from 05', Bonderman could be expected to realistically repeat his performance -- but is it worth the risk of waiting? Even when suitable replacements available in the minor league system? Hell no. If Pelfrey becomes a Tiger, it'll be worth any perceived risk associated with Bonderman continued success. This is too scary to even think about. You are one paranoid person my friend.
  7. The Mavs need to start winning so that the Knicks can have the worst record in basketball.
  8. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 09:34 PM) Did you see any of the Henderson game? I just read the article. Sound slike defense was good but only scoring 61 irks me. No I didn't, I was in Champaign all weekend for the OSU/Illinois game. Ya, we haven't really been impressive so far in these games but they are exhibitions. Tatum hasn't played and supposedly Lowery really isn't using an offense yet, just letting them play, so both of those are obvious factors on the offensive side of things. Hopefully things will start to click within the next few games.
  9. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 09:29 PM) SIU > Creighton Matt Shaw will be known by years end! He's definitely talented enough. He needs to be more aggressive though.
  10. This is the beauty of having 6 above average starters in todays market. We're going to get someone to overpay it's just going to take some time and it's going to take a while for the market to sort itself out. I'd absolutely love a guy like Mike Pelfrey and I hope we can get him or a pitching prospect like him back in return.
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 04:41 PM) There is reasoning behind him tucking his playbook away for the rest of the game, and I believe it is the game coming up in 2 weeks. That's not what Krush is talking about, though that is something we talked about. Basically the one thing we both thought was a very odd play call was the 3rd down call with about 3 or 4 minutes left in the game when you were up 14. Instead of running the ball and making Illinois use another timeout you guys threw it and allowed the Illini to keep a few timeouts. He did the same thing on the possession before as well. It was just odd to me to be throwing the ball with 3 minutes left and up 14.
  12. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 03:37 PM) I thought Tressel called an awful game, especially in the 2nd half...and it almost cost em.
  13. It's official: Brian Anderson is indeed a communist.
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) The big line I have seen the last few weeks is "The Sox have 99 million tied into 12 players going into 2007..." I see the Sox with a payroll around $115, but I still think one of the starters has to be moved. Ok, so I was a little bit off, THE POINT IS we have a lot of money tied up already.
  15. QUOTE(VAfan @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) You beat me to Moises Alou. I haven't been on Sox talk in a while, but when I noticed his name in ESPN magazine, it struck me as an immediate fit for the Sox. When he's not playing LF, he could spell Thome against lefties. Thome couldn't hit lefties at all -- slugging below .400 against them. Meanwhile, Alou slugged .571 last season. My biggest question is what kind of contract might Alou demand? He's 40, but would he take a 1-year deal? Is he looking for anything close to the $7.5 million he got last year? Could the Sox get him for a 1-year guarantee of $5-6 million with a second year option for a similar amount but a $1 mill. buyout? My other question is whether he's completely healthy (he played only 98 games last season). As for Roberts, he just doesn't do much for me, especially if he wants a raise. I'd rather sign a true hitter like Alou and use Mack to back him up or spell him against right handers. The Alou idea really isn't a bad one, problem is Ozzie isn't going to platoon Moises and Thome in the dh spot, it's just not going to happen.
  16. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) I see lots of money talk, so I am curious exactly where people are thinking the Sox 2007 payroll is going to settle out? I'd guess around 110. IIRC we have about 95 tied up already on about 20ish players. It's not just money here with Brandon, if I thought he was just going to be an average pitcher I'd trade him in a heartbeat for Crawford, but I don't, I think he's going to be a 1 or 2 starter in this league(ya I know everyone disagrees). That and with Freddy and Buehrle being free agents after this season we need to have a cheap starter that's locked up for a while and Brandon is.

    QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 12:04 PM) Forget Sarge, he has a career OPS+ of 96 and last season was a career year. I don't know why the Sox would want to sign a guy that is coming off a career year that he will hard pressed to ever duplicate. I also don't know why you want to get rid of Thome. Thome posted a top 20 VORP last year and although he's crap against lefties he mashes righties -- and last time I checked -- most pitchers are right handed. Crawford for McCarthy is a silly deal because the Sox were 2nd in MLB in RS but middle of the road in RA. BA was one of the best defensive CF in baseball last year and we need all the defense we can get. I'd much rather trade FG or Javier for pitching prospects and insert BMAC into the rotation. The lineup doesn't need more speed, the lineup scored a ton of runs last year. Run prevention was the problem, mostly because the defense wasn't as good as 2005 (thanks Ozzie for playing Mac so much in CF) and because the pitching went from a strenght to a liability. The Sox need to focus on run prevention and replace Pods with a live body out in LF and everything will take care of itself otherwise on the offense. Thome/Dye/Kong is as good of trio as their is in baseball and they don't need speed in front of them as much as guys that can get on base. I don't think you're going to change his opinion with stats like ops+ and vorp for the record. As far as getting as just getting a high obp guy to leadoff, well whether you like it or not that's not what Ozzie wants, he wants a guy that can run and bunt and he'll get one.

    I'm just going to go ahead and close this thread, nothing to see here. Interesting ideas, I still don't wanna trade Brandon though.
  19. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 07:24 PM) Bulls looked as bad in this 1st half as they did the last one. To let Orlando's pathetic guards do that to your defense is a joke. Howard is one thing, but you can't let these other guys light you up like that. They were too happy with last nights win I guess. I haven't been able to watch the game but Jameer Nelson is not pathetic. Just wanted to clear that up.
  20. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) I'm gonna try and get to Carbondale for the Dec 20 game vs. Central Michigan. Of course, go to the game when we're on break.
  21. QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 05:56 PM) I smell tag team death match. Rowand/Brian vs. SnB/Krush! Carbondale vs. Champaign! We'd win in the first 10 seconds.
  22. Jas, a trade for Pelfrey would make things more interesting here but still I'd want to keep both Pelfrey and Brandon and find a lead off hitter else where. You know how I feel about Brandon and I think if you could put Brandon and Pelfrey in the same rotation for years to come you have a pretty nice start there with your pitching staff.
  23. Josh Bone our one incoming freshman this season is out 4-6 weeks now. That to go along with Chris Cornelius being out for the season and we've lost a bit of the great depth it looked like we were going to have. Hopefully Bone can come back healthy and be able to contribute but for the mean time we'll still be fine just with less depth than before.
  24. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 02:26 PM) Fixed QUOTE(SnB @ Nov 1, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) LEWIS U TONIGHT WOOOOOOOOOOOOO I hate both of you so much.
