  1. I could hit that submarine softball pitch. The defense was impressive though.
  2. Ricky is like Joe Maddon in this way. It drives me nuts.
  3. Maybe he busted out of his slump because he was re-energized knowing he had 2 days off?
  4. this way he gets 2 days off. he said in the post game that he was tired. he has played in every game.
  5. the off speed stuff was more the cause in the past. its only the change in the current pitching philosophy of throw as hard as you can for as long as you can that changed it. Up until very recently pitchers were taught to pace themselves for 7 to 9 innings and only throw your best velocity when you need it. Its changed in today's game.
  6. no doubt. we are getting better at educated them but I needs to get better.
  7. part of the issue is also that the medical profession hasn't quite figured out how to deal with the "new" pitcher. in the past elbow issues were linked to poor mechanics on off speed pitches. Now with the new emphasis on velocity and not pacing, the % of fastball use is linked to elbow injuries. It's a difficult situation especially with the success rate of UCL reconstruction, the mindset is "I'll be back in a year."
  8. most arm injuries can be prevented and most are. This run may seem like a lot of injuries but it always amazes me how the majority of pitchers don't need some type of surgery. Most pitchers are in the training room constantly having something done. If they only pitched when everything felt good, we wouldn't play many games. This is why when people make the comment that "how did they not know he was hurt", it's silly. This is why the handling of pitchers soreness and injuries is so difficult. Overhand throwing just isn't a motion that our arm especially the shoulder is really designed to do. although I do agree that much if the stress on the arm is early on, but we are getting better at it.
  9. Yep it's a scope debridement of scar tissue. usually they do an ulnar nerve transposition when they do a UCL reconstruction and the nerve is no longer an issue. Either they didnt do one or there was massive scarring. These aren't common issues but they do happen. He is just lucky!
  10. he does have a medical background. his experiences have just been greatly different than mine.

There is a happy middle though. People can disagree without having 7 others attack and start with name calling and others. People don't seem to be able to have a discussion without becoming near violent with language.

There are 3 different elbow surgeries so maybe they were waiting to see if 2 were the same to qualify for the discount.

This is the odd one. Surgery on the actual muscle group is fairly rare. Must've been some serious repeated inflammation for that to occur. Most likely some kind of debridement. Good news is the UCL reconstruction held!

Agreed. It's really tough to read much of the board anymore. Very limited reading.
  15. Usually the home team is on the right for scores so I'm going to guess it was in Tennessee.

I guess I look at it as 21 years isn't that long in professional sports, in general. Working your way up through the minors takes along time. The staff at the highest levels don't turn over very much. A 21 year career only puts them at 42 years old or so when the staff usually hangs around until their mid-60's.

I would say both have a fairly good chance to be correct.
  18. I would disagree. However, I'm a little biased working i the field.

they do. all of the sports med guys go to the same yearly conferences. there is even one specifically for baseball. they all get the same journals. just depends on how they implement it. typically it's the older guys who dont like change like in any business The Sox group is fairly young.
  20. Burger was just bad luck. stepping on uneven ground in just the right or wrong way.
  21. no doubt he is good but he would have no effect on the Adolfo in the minors.
  22. I don't think so. it's been long enough since surgery and the rehab was done long ago. it would be interesting to know why they are doing a scope. he may be one of those guys who scars real easy and they need to remove it.

ligaments are a tricky thing. they aren't really part of a training program as you cant strengthen them much. they are usually injured in one time incidences such as sprained ankles or ACL tears. the UCL tears are typically linked to 2 factors. 1. throwing too many fastballs at near max. 2. having an arm angle below 3/4. there are others but those are the primary ones. The Sox organization is a title different where they dont really teach mechanics and allow the pitchers to do what they want until there are issues ala Chris Sale. They preach more if staying balanced and try not to overthrow. This is some of the reasons for Cooper sacrificing velocity for more movement. With Kopech it was the velocity issue and possibly being too strong and overcoming the ligament strength. With Rodon I think it's more the arm angle and the dumb fellow though I've commented on since he was drafted. Jones has the upright follow through similar to Rondon. He also really short arms the ball.
