  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 12:06 PM) If you make a catch, turn and make a football move, and cross the goal line, the play should end when the ball crosses the goal line. We've seen this enough. I might even be disagreeing with myself from a couple years ago. But this isn't what happened. As he makes the catch he is diving for the ball. He never plants his feet and makes the "football move" it's all one continuous motion. Thus to make a catch he needs to not have the ball move when he hits the ground, other wise it's incomplete. the call was correct by the current rule. I think it's a bad rule and needs to change.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 06:03 PM) I dislike this reputation of Jake Peavy as a competitor or a useful veteran. He talked a big game and could never back it up, and never knew when to shut his mouth when he wasn't backing it up. Anyone who can comeback to pitch in the MLB after that injury and surgery is one tough MFer, has my respect and is an ultimate competitor.
  3. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 11:14 AM) I edited what you responded to include the 2nd surgery. And of course after the injury, surgeries and rehabs I would hope he is "better off" but does that also mean you could say he doesn't have bad knees? I realize you have not examined him but can you say for certain that 2 surgeries for torn ligaments should classify him as having 2 healthy knees ? No he would not have "bad knees" provided there wasn't articular cartilage damage with the injury. This type of surgery is much different than others. These torn ligaments aren't ligaments that provide stability to the knee like the ACL,PCL, LCL and MCL. These are ligaments that keep the patella from gliding too far medial when you flex and extend the knee. The surgeries are really more to relieve pain more than stability. As I said previously many patients have these surgeries without having a traumatic injury and feel much better. ACL type surgeries are necessary for function but many times the knee does doesn't feel as good as it did before. Every patient i have known Who has had a MPFL reconstruction has felt better and could perform their activities better. To make a long story short, as long as there wasn't articular cartilage damage, I would classify him with healthy knees. I guess another way to put it is that an ACL recontruction is making the knee the best it can be given the injury. But the knee is not necessarily as good as before the injury. The MPFL reconstruction is taking an anatomical, congenital deficient knee and making better than it ever was.
  4. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 11:10 AM) The story specifically stated and gave the percentage, that the total percentage of money given to players has dropped. I think the story said it was at 36% of total income for MLB, something like that... where at one point in was in the low 50% range. This is what they get for not agreeing to a salary cap, to an extent. In the NBA I think it's 51 % of the revenue goes to the players by agreement in the CBA. As much as they don't want the salary cap, it would probably help them.

  6. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 11:04 AM) http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/9804700...ts-knee-surgery From the article for the first surgery: The first-time All-Star faces four to six months of rehab after the procedure, according to MLB.com. Dodgers orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery Monday. Machado tore his medial patellofemoral ligament Sept. 23. He decided to have surgery after consulting with several doctors. Got it. Typically, this injury happens to the anatomical anomaly making them susceptible to this type of injury. Usually patient have issues for years until this happens. Then their response is that they should have had the surgery years ago. Either way he is better off after the surgery.
  7. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 01:00 AM) Interesting story on how MLB is making money hand over fist...but not spending as much on players...and it is the MLBPA that is partially to blame for it: www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/the-mlbpa-has-a-big-problem-to-address-as-dodgers-yankees-marlins-dump-salary/ These moves were created by the MLBPA agreement for the salary tax. If they don't agree to the tax, the salary dump isn't needed. Except for the Marlins case, which is just the new owner wanting to start over. The amount of money the MLB is irrelevant. There wasn't a decrease in salaries. It just moved from one team to another.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) I very much disagree, he had control with both hands the whole way down and then it moved when it hit the ground. He had made a football move to go into the endzone after having control. It's different by definition. If a ball bounces off the hands during a handoff, it's a fumble because he was considered to have possession. If the same thing happens during a pass, it's considered incomplete because because of no possession. This is why is it not a touchdown, he did not have possession. That being said, it's a bad rule and should be changed. But as the rule currently reads, it's correct.
  9. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 09:59 AM) So Manny Machado does not have bad knees. They are at a minimum, better than they were before the surgeries.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 09:56 AM) I think you're referring to Lucas trying to write dialog that seemed over the top and philosophical between Anakin and Padme when it just came off as garbage. We didn't have to deal with that in this one at least. Yeah, I guess. They just had a very different feel from the action from the last two. Of course, it could be just me.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 07:56 AM) I disagree with you that 1,2,3 were more philosophical than action Maybe I should have added compared to 7 and 8. To me they had a very different feel.
  12. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 08:02 AM) I'd agree other than Lucas shoehorning in "politics". Also, the Jedi library books weren't burned along with the tree. Rey pretty clearly stole those. Did she? I don't remember that. I'll have to pay attention when I go again.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 05:21 AM) He definitely hit it, but if it was padded would that guarantee he wouldn't be hurt? Players get hurt running into padded walls as well. Of course there is no guarantee. However, the likely hood of it happening is greatly decreased. He has a good case that it would have been easy to pad it and not doing it puts a player at an unnecessary risk. Having hazards in the field of play that aren't discussed before hand are legitimate complaints.
  14. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 18, 2017 -> 08:27 AM) From August 23,2014 Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will undergo season-ending surgery on his medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) in his right knee in the next week, a procedure that will repair the torn ligament and that is the same surgery performed on his left knee last year. https://www.mlb.com/news/knee-surgery-once-...ason/c-91045502 These are common for patella femoral pain syndrome (pain under the knee cap). He must have had congenital "loose" knee caps to have the surgeries on both knees. He will not have further issues with them and will will have healthier knees as he gets older due to the surgeries. These surgeries correct anatomical deficiencies and are not done for "injuries" unless he had a dislocated patella which isn't listed anywhere.
  15. QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 08:44 PM) He also basically blew up the entire premise of the Jedi from everything we learned in the prequels and OT, about Jedi needing years of training to use and harness their force power, which is a pretty major shift in Star Wars culture. It was touched on in Rogue One, but I also liked the theme that there is a grey area between good and bad. That is something the OT and prequels tried to be very clear about, the Rebels are good, the Empire is bad. This is a major change that Disney wanted. A shift from philosophical based movies from Lucas (episodes 1,2,3 went too far that way) to action movies. Action sells better than the philosophy. Even at the end of this movie Yoda tells Luke that the force is changing when the Jedi library is destroyed.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 09:46 PM) I feel like we will find out this week that Os aren’t gonna trade him. Most likely. While the White sox may have one of the best offers, that doesn't mean it's a good one. After revamping the farm system for an extended good run, I doubt Hahn is making a substantial offer for the rental.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) What is this based on? They were going to talk extension with Samardzija, didn't go far. Bartolo Colon took more money. Freddy Garcia stay d, but he knew Ozzie well and didn't get to free agency. It is a pipe dream to think it will make a difference. Let some other team pay him $17 million in 2018, and watch how interested he will be if you take your same offer which is as good as any other team's, and add the $17 million you would have paid him in 2018 to the $30 million or so you offer to pay him in 2019. Added bonus, you save the prospects you would have sent to Baltimore. It's based on the fact that if the Sox make the deal they must have some kind of information that it would help their chances of getting him to sign a deal. I don't think Hahn is an idiot. If he makes the deal he must have some inside information.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 04:52 PM) If they trade for him, they will spend it on his services for a non competitive season. Got it.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 04:51 PM) Again, if the White So. Are going to be in the same range, why not just offer him an additional $17 million in year 1 to that offerthe money you would have paid him in 2018 to still lose and hurt your draft position. Maybe it will take more than just money to pry him away from New york. If the behind the scenes word is that he wants to go to NY because he likes it, maybe they can convince him to like Chicago just as much. 17 million in a 350 million dollar deal is pocket change to him.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) Wouldn't an additional $17 million to his offer be better? Not if they can save it to put a better team around him.
  21. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) I don't understand why we are making this idiotic decision. Just offer Machado the most amount of money next offseason. Maybe they get the feeling that they would need to offer vastly more money than New York. however, if he is comfortable here the price may not be quite so high. The White sox will always have a middle of the road payroll. If they can save 5-10 million per year, that would allow them to build a better team around him. I have no idea if this is what they are thinking but it makes sense. anything to get an advantage to bring him to the Sox instead of the Yankees. with the Yankees getting a gift in Stanton maybe they won't break the bank for Machado.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Saw that post and same guy mentioned Giolito AND Lopez That wouldn't be a good deal even if they had a guaranteed extension.
  23. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 01:11 PM) I think Angelos is passing on a good opportunity to exploit the Yanks. If Angelos expects Machado to sign with the Yanks next year anyway, then why not take advantage of a chance to get something from the Yanks this year? I would tell the Yanks that if they really want Machado, discussions begin with Torres. With so many bidders ( up to ten ) the Orioles are in a great spot to drive the price up on the Yanks to see just how desperate they are for Machado. This is what I would do, provided their offer is the best.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 17, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) The problem you have here is not only Machado one of the best players in the game, he is also a franchise icon. A trade that basically looks like a salary dump isn't happening which is why the White Sox interest is curious and ridiculous. The Orioles can sell it though. If he is refusing to even talk about an extension, they know he is gone. It's the "at least we got something" defense. In this case it's probably true, from all reports.
  25. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 16, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Isn't it under padding? I am pretty sure his foot got tangled with the outlet, not his knee. I would imagine a pad might have caused the same thing. Now I see it. It is in between the padded rail and padded wall. I still think there is danger by all walls whether they are padded or not. I don't think if they had a pad on that thing it would guarantee he wouldn't have been injured. NFL players wear helmets and they get concussions all the time. True. But concussions aren't caused by hitting the edge of something. This is a common mechanism for this injury and the padding would blunt the edge. after watching it a few times, there is another possibility for the injury. His foot seems to get caught as he goes to the wall. Another mechanism for this injury is the foot getting stuck and causing a rapid deceleration as the body is still moving. This was a famous injury for a Bears Wide receiver Wendell Davis. his feet caught caught at that old nasty astroturf at Vet stadium in Philadelphia. He ruptured his patella tendon on one leg and the quad tendon on the other, if i remember right. This would change the whole case if he didn't actually hit the metal box.
