2017 Cubs Catch-all thread
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jun 20, 2017 -> 07:04 AM) I don't think the play was dirty, but that should be an automatic out. It was a cheap shot because the catcher was not blocking the plate. rizzo had to go to the side of the plate to make contact. If he goes straight to the plate there is no contact.

2017 AL Central Catch all thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 19, 2017 -> 10:46 AM) The funny thing is, the Sox were on a roll that year about halfway through, then the wheels fell off. Not to mention they would have made the playoffs by the current rules, I believe.

Are Americans too lazy or apathetic to relocate for work?
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jun 19, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) I'm not sure this gets to the heart of the issue. The issue isn't low paying job to low paying job. The issue is no job to low paying job. The small, rural towns that Trump was targeting during the election that lost their anchor employer and have massive unemployment. What do those people do? The jobs are urban, but they can't afford to make the move. They can't afford to go back to school to learn a skill. Relocating isn't really a feasible choice if you can't afford to move to the jobs. There a couple of choices in this scenario. 1. Dad or mom drives longer to go to work. 2. dad or mom goes to where the job is for X amount of time until they find something closer or family can move with them. There are jobs in the rural areas. It just depends on the length the person is willing to go to get them. There are many people now who drive to Chicago from rural Indiana for work to avoid Illinois taxes.

Are Americans too lazy or apathetic to relocate for work?
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 19, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) Restrictive building policies that lead to housing shortages. Restrictions on height limits, building types, parking requirements. Interesting. I guess living in small towns, we don't run into these issues.

Are Americans too lazy or apathetic to relocate for work?
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 19, 2017 -> 09:57 AM) Housing policy is a government choice that would probably be better at an affordability level as a big gov't choice instead of the "once I move here no one else can move here" policy of local governments. This is an odd statement. What type of policy prohibits someone from "moving here"

Are Americans too lazy or apathetic to relocate for work?
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jun 19, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) It's tough for a low wage worker to relocate because of all the costs associated with it - including the higher housing costs in urban areas (which also happens to be where the jobs are). I have relocated three times since I graduated from law school, all over the country. Moving is expensive. Finding housing is stressful - even with a stable job in place. The point here - there's more to it than "you go where the jobs are." Of course there is. If it's not worth your expense to move then either a. the job you have isn't much worse than the one you are looking at or you have something holding you to your area. People won't move for a worse position. there is always a plus and a minus. I've moved plenty of times between when my parents made the choice and when I made the choice.

Father's Day Games (Lopez, Guerrero, no DSL)
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 18, 2017 -> 04:20 PM) When you draft guys based on them being polished (Fisher, Collins, Burdi) and see them struggling like this, there's definitely reason for pessimism. Hansen has been great but is beyond ready for a higher level. I disagree. Pessimism would be if they show no signs of being able to adjust to pro ball. If collins was proved he couldn't handle catching and couldn't put up a 800 OPS or Brurdi couldn't K any one. I see signs they are adjusting to pro ball. Maybe concern but not pessimism.

Are Americans too lazy or apathetic to relocate for work?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 18, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) Medicaid overhaul faces tough test in Trump country ‘Around here, there ain’t no jobs,’ says one beneficiary about the prospect of having to work to qualify for benefits. http://www.politico.com/story/2017/06/18/m...-country-239655 Doesn't matter if we blame Dems or Republicans, what is the solution? Is forcing families to relocate for jobs that barely pay a liveable wage going to work as a practical solution? Why/why not? Next, does the government "owe" them better opportunities than currently available? Should those people be "doubly punished" when the incidences of health problems related to smoking, cardiovascular disease, poor diet/nutrition are already disproportionately occurring in poor/rural states that largely voted for Trump? Or is that fair since their health problems are largely self-induced? What is the cost to society when they have to find alternate daycare solutions to family members? Should the government provide "higher quality" childcare to those children in order to break the cycle of poverty, or is that a distortion that's unacceptable to most Americans (because they would have to subsidize the costs through higher taxes)? You go where the jobs are. My parents did it. I did it. My kids should do it. The government shouldn't "owe" or "provide" any of this. It's not like we live in China where the government controls....Oh wait you do. (sorry couldn't resist) I can't believe I keep falling for your scenarios.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:37 PM) 1) He wasn't driving 2) The broken tail light was a pretext as was revealed by the reasons the officer gave over the radio for pulling them over i.e. having a "wide nose" No doubt the broken tail light was a pretext to pull him over. I got pulled over for not having a license plate light. However once I told the officer I had a weapon in the car I didn't ignore his request to keep my hands where he could see them. I'm not saying this to justify whatthe officer did. I'm just commenting on the statement thathe did absolutely nothing wrong. He did do things wrong. Shen a police officer pulls you over, you listen to everthing he says espcially when you are armed. Even if youare legally armed, the officer is on a different state of awareness.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:16 PM) The cop who killed Philando Castile was just found not guilty. As a reminder, Philando did not break any laws whatsoever. Was in his car with his fiance and young daughter. This is a little simplistic. He had a broken tail light, for which he was pulled over. He was also stoned and didn't listen to the officer when he told him to keep his hands in sight and not reach for anything including the weapon he told the officer he had. In fact part of the defense was that he was too stoned to understand the officers directions.

Luis Robert signing official
QUOTE (FT35 @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) Fair enough...good point about the year off. I wouldn't be surprised to see him on a little fast track though. The dude is a monster athlete and really looks cut next to other 19 year olds. At 6'3" 205 at age 19--he's got possible Giancarlo Stanton body type once he fills out. (6'6" 245). Another 20 year old debuter too. but can he do a standing back flip?

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 10:38 AM) The state of this transaction is really fascinating to me at the moment. I can't see myself being an opposing GM with a team competing right now, one that has a need for a 1-2 starter, being willing to move a top 30 prospect +++ for him right now. If I've been scouting Quintana, I'm seeing a guy who isn't confident he can put guys away, he is nibbling, his curveball is vulnerable, etc. Not necessarily anything that cannot be corrected, but how long will that take? Can I get him turned around in time so that I can trust him to pitch in the big games that I need whomever I go out and acquire with these prospects to pitch in? I really don't know for sure what the answer to that question is right now. What if I go out and get him and he just sort of stays where he is at for the rest of the year? That is NOT the guy I need for my team right now. I almost see there being an opportunity for a team like the Pirates or the Braves. Someone that doesn't necessarily need Q for this season, as they likely won't be competing for anything. They feel good about Q because of his track record, and he fits into their long-term plan because he is cost-controlled and can likely slot in comfortably as a #2 if need be. Perhaps I can go out and acquire him now for .75-85 cents on the dollar, as the White Sox may just want to move on from the constant rumors and questions. I can maybe get him for a slight discount, and because I believe in him over the long-term, it's a risk I am willing to take. Instead of having to move my top guy, maybe I can get away with moving my 2nd guy, along with some other pieces. That is just my thought process. If I was Cashman or Theo, I would NOT be looking at Q as a guy that I would want to spend some of my bullets on for THIS season. The risk is just too great IMHO. This is the key many people are missing. While Quintana is a good pitcher, he isn't pitching well now. Other GM's want a guy who will help them win this year. That is why they make deadline trades, to help them win this year. If quintana doesn't start pitching better, he will have no value at the deadline. It doesn't mean he won't have value later, he just doesn't have value in a down year.

Job Thread
QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Jun 16, 2017 -> 09:14 AM) Yeah I interviewed at this pharma company recently and they said I asked for too much money. They wanted someone to make 20-25K less than what was market and wanted more experience. Good f***ing luck. I declined another offer because they initially said they would give me what I wanted. Then went down to something that was OK then tried to lowball me finally. I told them to take a hike. It's just weird. Yep. companies will do that. Just stick to your guns and wait until you get what you need to move on. If you have the option. Sometimes you need to take one just to get out of a bad situation you're currently in.

Chris Sale 2016 vs 2017
QUOTE (maxjusttyped @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 08:54 PM) Sale is the best pitcher on the planet right now and it isn't close. He currently leads all pitcher in fWAR by 1.6. FIP currently sits below 2. He's leading the majors in K% and ranks 7th in BB% despite pitching in the tougher league. I said this earlier in the thread but his ability to continually improve despite already being so great amazes me. In SIERA Sale has a 2.55 and Scherzer has a 2.71. They are the only 2 under three. the only weakness he seems to have is his LOB%. It's only 69%, whereas Scherzer is 81%. Sale is below the league average even. He kind of falls apart when runners are on base or he isn't pitching out of the stretch well this year. I haven't watched him pitch to know which it is.

Brexit
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 08:42 PM) Sinn Fein told May clearly that am agreement with DUP would be a violation of the Good Friday Agreement. https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/875383033578135552 I love reading and watching the Brits go at it in politics. It makes all of the rhetoric here look tame.

Tommy Kahnle
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 11:53 PM) "Jerry and the partners" ought to really check in with their financial planners before they make any foolish decisions, despite how those decisions might benefit the Sox' fan base (as if THAT'S ever been a factor in any decision-making the past four decades). Wouldn't want to threaten Reinsdorf's status as "billionaire owner" by asking him to sign players who might just lift this franchise out of its near decade-long postseason-appearing drought. They should never make decisions to appease the fans. They should make the decisions on what would make the team as good as it can be.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise Shot at Charity Baseball Practice
QUOTE (Reddy @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 07:32 PM) Dude it doesn't matter. I can't control what Republicans do. I can't control how they perceive me. I can control whether I'm contributing to the problem or not. And I'm going to do my best to stop contributing to the problem. I can't control them. I can control me. Liberals can't control what Republicans do, but we can control what we do. We're the ones who want change, right? They don't. So it's us that need to do whatever it takes to reach out to them and create arguments that will bring them to us. Divisive, angry, hateful rhetoric will never achieve that goal. We finally have something to agree on with politics.

If you were comfortably rich, what would you do?

If you were comfortably rich, what would you do?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 12:01 PM) I sort of feel the same way. I love my job, my family is in a great place, and I am hooked up with some great people and organizations that I support. The crazy thing is if I ever got stupid rich, I would buy the company I work for and turn the day to day operations over to the other 4 people I work with, and then live off of the revenue stream from it. There really isn't anything I want to get away from per se, but I would love to put more resources into things around my hometown that really need it. Though I will admit, a lot more travel and baseball would be in my future. Not if they are in Illinois.

*Official* Work Out Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 01:49 PM) If you're goal is to lose weight, while it may work for you, it's not optimal. You're basically fighting against this diet if in fact your goal is to shed bodyfat/weight. Loading up on calorie dense fat and carbs before a workout is essentially negating the calorie burn from the workout. I'd only recommend this type of pre-workout for someone trying to add size. -- You can also eat at McDonalds everyday if you go to the gym and burn off the 1500 calories you ingest without gaining weight...but again, not optimal. It does depend on your goals. I have triathletes on 6000 calories per day. However as you say they need it because they are burning it.

*Official* Work Out Thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 12:55 PM) I've never been a fan of any diet that starves a specific category of food, specifically because it can become hard to follow during certain times of the year depending on what food is readily available to you. Unless you want to be the type that goes to someones BBQ or party and brings their own food because they can't eat X, Y, or Z. I'm under the firm belief that balance is everything...and restrictive diets -- while there is no doubt they work -- they only do so short term because eventually you'll fall off this diet restriction, and the moment that happens, you'll lose everything you've worked for. The goal is to get to where you want to be WITHOUT carb starving, or fat starving, etc...eat less, but better foods. I have no restrictions on what I eat. I eat protein (meat, milk, etc.), carbs, fat, sugar, etc...I just don't eat until I'm sick. I also eat healthy whenever possible, but when not possible (such as in the above example), I'll simply eat less of the unhealthy stuff without outright not eating it at all. For example, instead of drinking an entire bottle of wine, I'll have 1 or 2 glasses and be done... I agree with the diets. Your body needs all of the different fuels for different time and activities. It's just keeping the ratios and targeting for various specific activities ie, a marathon.

White Sox pick 3B Jake Burger at #11
QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 11:03 AM) Prior to him making that switch, he took high floor, lite-stuff players with a high likelihood of making bigs quick. The years of the Lance Broadway/Kyle McCullough drafts. Yes he did. It's amazing how someone's philosophy can change depending different situations and they aren't necessarily stuck with "being only one thing."

If you were comfortably rich, what would you do?
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 08:54 PM) Let's say, for argument's sake...at least $10 million. Imagine you're 50-55 with kids already out of the house. Start a non-profit? What would your goal/mission/vision be? Teach/mentor? Start a charter school? Volunteer, but just part-time? Social venture philanthropy, for example...working as the corporate giving/volunteer coordinator position for a company like Starbucks (upper management) or Whole Foods? Environment/green tourism? Travel blogging? Venture capital investing in tech and green tech start ups? Microfinance to help provide lower no interest Loans to women/children in developing countries? Mentoring start ups, like Mark Cuban or Marcus Lemonis? Run for political office? Get a master's or PhD? Got those done. I would post on soxtalk more. I want to get to 10,000. Retire to a Colorado mountain. People are scary.
