  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) I understand that aspect and that is why pitchers are being nursed along like they are now. But I want to know why if my theory is wrong, why were pitchers more durable before they started to get these huge lumps of money? I'm not saying go crazy and have high schoolers pitch every 3rd day in rookie ball with 150 pitch counts. But I'd love for a team to break away from the flow, and try conditioning a pitchers arm to last longer. For High School guys, I'd still take it easy with about 80-90 pitch counts (and I'd wait the next season to have them pitch regularly. Most HS pitchers, at least the good ones, pitch a ton in the summer). But once they reach the age of 21 or 22, I'd start to have them work their way up to about 110-120 pitches a game. The only team out there that will be "crazy" enough to do it will probably be the Rangers. I recall Billy Martin, when he was the manager of the A's "breaking away from flow" and pitched the hell out his starting rotation. And while I can't remember the names of the pitchers, that may be why I don't. They had a pretty decent young staff back then, iirc and they just kind of petered out. Similar to Wood and Pryor after Baker did his number on them.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:21 AM) Not exactly something we as Sox fans can really complain about, considering Hawk will still be b****ing about a bad call from the 2nd well into the 8th inning. It makes me cringe when he does that because I know other fans are listening to him and thinks "wow, the Sox announcers are such whiners." I really couldn't care less what other fans think.
  3. There's a lot to consider here. Do you sign Thome again and for how much? If so, JD has been awesome in a Sox uniform and the odds are he has a few good years left. However, you have to take defense into account and though I don't think he's been as bad some people seem to think, it will certainly be an issue in the future. Unless ... can JD play 1B? I think he's athletic enough to do so and if that's the case, what about Paulie? He also deserves the respect the other two do, so do you trade him and put Dye at first? Or do you keep all three? I don't know yet. I've been thinking about this dilemma for quite some time and still haven't come up the answer.
  4. Regardless of Parque's reasoning or what he did, then fact that it didn't start until after the Sox released him is what was important to me.
  5. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) If Halladay and Lee aren't considered major, I wonder what the hell they are talking about then. I have no clue, but I thought it was interesting.
  6. MLB Quick Pitch is reporting that while the Rays are in the mix for Halladay, and also for Cliff Lee, they supposedly are in discussions about something else they called major.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 03:14 PM) So in other words, all of the budgetary crap that people freaked out about, was just a smoke screen... again. As usual.
  8. QUOTE (maki @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 08:05 AM) Cowley was also on the Score this morning saying the deal did not include Beckham and this was the reason the Jays balked. Sounds like both GM's were smart. KW for not offering him, and Riccardi for wanting him.
  9. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 08:03 AM) Yeah, I like Black Jack, but I think his opinion carries about as much weight as yours or mine. I criticize a lot of Ozzie's in-game decisions but not this one. In that situation, Ozzie knows best. I like McDowell, too. Always have. Especially after he flipped off the Yankee fans. But I think Ozzie saw this as a chance to tell Richard "Job well done, son." and it was the right move.
  10. QUOTE (kristofer @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 07:57 AM) the thing is, we don't know if he was feeling really tired after the 8th, or if his location was way off (from what coop or ozzie saw). we just don't have enough information to gauge this. Neither did Black Jack.
  11. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 11:27 AM) I actually agree that people who think Ozzie is an idiot (outside of his DeWayne Wise mancrush, which is pretty impossible to explain) are wrong because I think that overall he's a good manager, but you aren't a good manager just because your record is better than your run differential. There is a lot more to it than that. I can't argue against that. But during Ozzie's time as Sox manager, and KW as GM for that matter, I have enjoyed being a Sox fan more than in any other era. I've been a Sox Fan a long time. These past few years have been the best. So really, it's overall body of work that makes me shake my head at the Ozzie is an idiot idiots.
  12. So we have scored as many as we have given and are 4 games over .500 ... Yes, Ozzie's an idiot. Think green on that last sentence.
  13. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:04 AM) If you really want to get crazy you can take a look at this. That's the only game of its kind during the Pierzynski era. Did you notice the date that game was played? Now, that's crazy.
  14. "Sudden" Sam McDowell, Juan "The Dominican Dandy" Marichal, Stan "The Man" Musial, Willie "The Say Hey Kid" Mays, Willie "Pops" Stargell, Leo "The Lip" Durocher, "Joltin'" Joe DiMaggio .... baseball used to be a gold mine for great nicknames. Sadly, it's a tradition that has gone by the wayside. All I can think of at this moment for current players is "Big Pappi".
  15. Earl Weaver was a hoot.
  16. I'm not a fan of the president, but even I thought this was unfair. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-1...,1559411.column

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) If MB can win 300, he is in no doubt. There aren't any pitchers who have won 300 and not made it, right? I don't think Mark sticks around that long. I don't think he needs baseball as much as we need Mark Buehrle. I agree with everything you say here, but I said close to 300 wins. Tommy John had 288 and Blyleven had 287 but they aren't in. However you got Whitey Ford in there with 236 over 16 seasons with some great Yankee teams. So who knows?

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 10:11 AM) It's a traveshamockery that Tommy John and Bert Blyleven aren't in. I totally agree.

QUOTE (Crash73 @ Jul 16, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) I still don't know why ChiSox_Sonix is being given a pass. This is a baseball forum. Also, I understand not agreeing with policies, but we should all back our president and hope and help him be successful. That said, I guess my post will be deleted again. It's really hard to pass up making a comment on this post, but since this isn't the 'Buster I'll restrain myself.

Don Sutton is in. Tommy John and Bert Blyleven aren't. Those were 3 guys with longevity based statistics. .... Hell add Phil Neikro as being in. So, if Mark hangs around long enough to get close to 300 wins it's a 50-50 chance.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 15, 2009 -> 04:52 PM) 5.) 6-4-3 DP on Span 4.) Thome's Opening Day Bomb 3.) Dye/Konerko back-to-back 300's 2.) Beckham Slays the Cubs 1.) Konerko's 3 HR Game Regarding number 5, didn't Ramirez hit take it himself at 2B?

    Obama.

It's dangerous to forget Chuck Norris like that. Steve McQueen AND Obama? He's gonna kick your ass twice.
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 05:51 PM) Yes. That seems pretty obvious. Acceptable: I have been diagnosed with cancer and would like to spend the next few months with my family. Unacceptable: Dude, surf is up in Maui and I am so outta here. I thought this job would be cool, but it is so lame. People always asking me s*** and stuff, and I am not getting half the woman that other Governors and Presidents got. Nice. But the point was that whatever her reasons were, none of us have been in her high heels and know what she and her family have been dealing with. So, to condemn her for doing what she thinks is right thing to do for herself, her family and the state of Alaska is just wrong without really knowing the underlying reasons.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 05:26 PM) Well, all politicians "quit" when they get elected to a higher office than the one they're currently holding, it's a pretty commonly accepted thing to do. We had a discussion on this several months back I think. But Palin's decision to resign seemed bizarre and out of the blue because it was unprecedented. To my knowledge, nobody's ever resigned a position like that in the middle of their term unless they had gotten in trouble or were about to be in trouble (which partially explains baseless speculation that she was under federal investigation). So, in other words, there are acceptable reasons to quit while others are not acceptable?
  25. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 13, 2009 -> 05:22 PM) Sorry Yas, I respect you and your opinions, but I don't buy the financial trouble thing. She had one year to go and probably could have delayed any trial until she's out of office. She was still going to write a book, go on speaking tours, whatever else a politician can do to make money legally...which probably could have held out until next year. If this is about her youngest child and the time she needs, which I'm sure having a Down's child is very difficult, I could completely understand. But she is quitting because she can't take the heat. And if she thinks the kitchen in Juneau is hot...well, nothing about Alaska is hot. You are entitled to your opinion. We don't really know why she quit. Your speculation on her reasons are no more factual than mine. I'm just saying that she's being criticized for quitting and when you look at all she has had to deal with since accepting the VP nomination, I can't say I blame her.
