QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:56 AM) I don't think you can blame Thome for walking. You should probably blame whoever's hitting behind him. Since they're the ones hitting into DPs. All Thome can do is try to not make an out. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...r&t=b#bases Those are Dunn's numbers with different base/out states. Dunn's a career .231 hitter with RISP, but he also has a .420 OBP in those situations. Pitchers are probably more careful with guys like Dunn and Thome when they're up with RISP. They'd much rather pitch around them than attack them and get hurt by a three run home run. It's hard to hit if you don't get a pitch to hit.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:46 AM) Paint It Black isn't a fool, but that post was sure moronic. To insist that Gwynn is the most overrated player of his time is bad enough, but to go on and say that a player who batted more than 40 points lower in his career is better... Go look at the highest lifetime averages. Nobody above Tony Gwynn is even remotely recent. Add to that the fact that he has one of the greatest posters I've ever seen, and you have yourself one of the best hitters of all time. If TG played for in NY, he'd be a cultural icon in this country.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 05:27 PM) via Heyman, Lee has 2 seven year offers, said NYY and Rangers weren't expecting to go beyond 6, so might be 2 mystery teams They've been so under the radar this offseason that it wouldn't shock me if one of those mystery teams was the Twins. Just a hunch, though.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) I was at a party Saturday during the deadline, and a friend was constantly checking his phone for updates. By 3:30 we knew nothing else was going to happen. At that point and for the next day I was content to give KW a D+ for the deal. Swapping Hudson for Jackson seemed like an even trade (no real improvement), and for that he gets a C. But factor in the money and that drops his grade to a D. I added the plus because of the experience Jackson has. Today though, I feel a little better about it. If Coop can fix him and Jackson goes out there and pitches his ass off and helps the Sox get to the post-season, I'll be happy. Like someone else said, Coop may have very well went to KW and said that Hudson's celing is lower than we thought. And if that is the case, that's fine. The $8 million Jackson is owed next year is still a concern. I'm sure all the variables you mentioned in your second paragraph were all taken into consideration and thoroughly discussed by the Sox brain trust.

After not even viewing this site in weeks I decide to see what's going on. I start reading at page 21 of this thread and see two pages of bickering, sniping and name calling. Now I remember why I stopped coming on here.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 21, 2010 -> 08:28 AM) Exactly. People need to make the realization that if we ride Andruw like a starter, the odds look pretty good that his body will break down and we will have Kotsay full time. Ozzie has to make the choice between playing Jones 4 to 5 days a week tops to try to make him last the season, or starting him all of the time until the wheels fall off and you see Kotsay play as long as it takes. Also realize that once Jones gets injured, even when he comes back, he doesn't seem to maintain his form using recent seasons as a guide. This isn't about a Kotsay man-crush, its about protecting Jones, and you aren't going to hear anyone on this team actually say that. A voice of reason among all the teeth gnashing.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting this.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 18, 2010 -> 09:16 PM) The first one. I think I was the only one who hated the 80's logo. No. No, you weren't.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2010 -> 07:36 AM) The only guy in the Ritchie trade who had any potential value at the time was Wells, and he even had gotten a reputation as being pretty mentally weak. We got back a guy we though could be a middle of the rotation starter, which is pretty solid value. Now Ritchie completely flopped after the fact, but that doesn't mean we didn't get a good value. All true. Personally, I've always pinned that trade on Schuler.

There's a lot of over the top Gordon Beckham love going on a few pages back. Beckham's a hell of a ballplayer but he's not baseball's version of Michael Jordon. Wait .... Michael Jordon was baseball's version of Michael Jordon. Bad analogy. Ok, he's not baseball's version of Tiger Woods. Ummm ... Tiger Woods. Slayer. Hmmm. Well, I think you can catch my drift.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) Wow, a lot of you ought to lighten up. This is a complete non-story. You're right. After the reading the Trib story on this, I kinda changed my tune.

Unless this was Louie's idea from the start, I think it sucks big time. If OV initiated it, it's even worse. Total lack of respect.

Why Carlton Fisk is still my favorite Sox player, ever

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) Why... Because you don't agree with me? No. IMO, I'm dead on. IMO, you're dead wrong. -
QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 12:25 PM) No rush. He's still only 20. It may not seem like it because his name has been around for a couple of years now, but he's a baby. For some perspective, we look at Beckham like he's advanced beyond hs years, but he's 3 years older than Viciedo. He's also under contract for a limited amount of time with no arbitration years to tie him to the team after the contract is complete. So yeah, there is a rush.

QUOTE (Soxpride724 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 03:18 PM) Hey everyone long time lurker and new poster here. I will be attending Soxfest this weekend, and am curious who here will be going? I have not attended this event in years, and I was wondering how the event is now that it is at the Palmer House? Welcome to Soxtalk.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 03:01 PM) Which is exactly why I wish Deion Sanders would have punched him right in the throat and knocked him on his arse. Did fisk invent the game? How can he tell someone on an opposing team that he's not playing the game "right"? what a pompous a-hole. Yeah... he forever belongs in a red sox uniform. Deion was disgracing the game and the Yankee pinstripes. I hate the damn Yankees as much as anybody, but they do have a tradition of great baseball. I wish Fisk would have stomped him into a greasy spot. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 03:05 PM) All the more reason to be the first one to write it off! Now you sound like a Cub fan ... at least a realistic Cub fan. Wait! That's an oxymoron.

White Sox agree to terms with Jenks and Quentin

QUOTE (beck72 @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 06:30 AM) Danks should be locked up. I'm sure the numbers can be worked out between the two sides on a deal similar to Gavin's. Danks has already passed on a deal similar to Gavin's, iirc. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 10:04 AM) Gotta wait until I get a coupon. Finally! A solid suggestion.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 05:54 PM) Alright, with Vlad off the market, you have to take a look at signing JD and rotating the DH/RF spot between him and TCQ. Give them each plenty of rest and also use the DH for Konerko some with Kotsay taking over 1st. That would keep all 3 of the older players well-rested (JD, Konerko, Kotsay), as well as give TCQ plenty of chances to DH and stay out of harm's way. At this point, JD is easily the best target who can be had and could fit in our budget, and he'd sign a one-year incentive-laden contract. TCQ is in harm's way every time he steps into the batter's box.

The final out of the ALCS in 2005 was one very special moment for me. The Sox were FINALLY going to the World Series!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 10:19 AM) You lost me at Joe Crede being a dick. Absolutely. How jaded can some fans can be.
-
I'll agree with 1 through 6 with the exception of swapping Frank and AJ. I'll go with Crede, Contreras, Garland and Rowand. I give the edge to Rowand over Magglio due to the 2005 season and Magglios' contentious departure.
-
I'd lean toward Crisp over Pods.
