  1. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 10:42 PM) The were rating staying power after the first month of baseball. He said he likes us because by far we have the best rotation out there. Our rotation has the top ERA in the game by half a run and has the most quality starts. He stated Jon Garland is our 5th starter and he's 4-0. Nice to see someone think we have a chance. Also stated that Frank Thomas will be back eventually to help our offense. No. He didn't say that. What he said was that his White Sox connection told him at the end of spring training that we would win the division because of our starting pitching. Then he talked about the pitching, but he he never personally endorsed the Sox.

    QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 11:36 PM) Hi, new here. Anyway, there is something that I haven't seen discussed in regards to the success of the pitching staff. That's the addition of Pierzynski. I remember reading an article early in the season where Ozzie said how no one wanted to pitch to Olivo. Is it possible that A.J. has worked with the pitchers better than the catchers last year? Not only AJ, but Widger as well.
  3. QUOTE(Y2HH @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 10:41 AM) Let's not blame everything this offense is failing to do on Dye. Iguchi, the one everyone was questioning coming into the MLB (eg: will he be able to hit major league pitching), turns out is the only one hitting major league pitching. When you strand, what was it 16 runners? Many on free passes, you do not deserve to win, against anyone, ever. The hitting is beginning to worry me because we are now a month into the season and it has gotten worse, not better. Meanwhile, the Twins are beating teams like the Angels and we struggle to string together 7 hits against one of the worst pitchers in baseball. I leave Dye in the offense, drop him lower, do whatever, but leave him in. We need our STARTING players to hit, Gload is NOT the answer. Oh, and perhaps it's time to move Iguchi into the 3 spot, because he's the only one who can hit. Yes, I'm quite annoyed that we are losing ground to the Twins when we are playing BAD teams. -y2 Losing ground when playing bad teams. :headshake We lost A game to Detroit. Oakland is not a bad team.
  4. QUOTE(knightni @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 03:43 AM) True. At least it's a posting about Canada; for once. Amen.
  5. QUOTE(knightni @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 03:26 AM) You think he wouldn't? Not if the polls swing back the other way.

    My point was that the Sox have outperformed the Twins every year, I think, in the run differential stat and therefore should have one the division. So the Twins have, on the positive side, proven the game is beyond stats. The Sox, conversely, have proven it from a negative standpoint.

  8. I hope the oil prices keep dropping, but I have my doubts.
  9. It's amazing when you can identify the thread starter by the thread subject.
  10. Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care?
  11. Free speech. I (heart) my vagina. That gets the ACLU involved. I (heart) my bible. Same reaction? I don't think so. This is getting to be a very screwed up country.
  12. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 02:13 AM) Has to be 2000 Of course, the team I have hated the most was the 2003 team. I loved them until I saw the Twins showering themselves in champaign. So much talent, so good, and they choked. That team was a World Series team, and I say that with no second thoughts and no doubt in my mind. They probably would have just cruised through the playoffs. 8-11 against a team that lost 119 games, lost like 3 1-0 games that ELo started, and won like 1 game from the 5th starter spot all year long. Those 3 factors killed us. Just another failed team, in my opinion.

    QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 02:15 AM) I feel the exact same way, and I'd consider myself a semi-stathead. I love using those types of stats and valuing players, but when it comes right down to it, the game is beyond stats. The Twins have proved over the past 3-4 years exactly that. You would think they would stop being 'lucky' after a while, but at some point, that 'luck' is no longer luck, it is just something that happens. I wonder who did more to prove the point, the Twins or White Sox?
  14. Ok ... I should have read though the entire thread. So sue me!
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 29, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) Greatest basketball game in the history of the NCAA except for the NC St Championship game vs Houston. Duke vs. Kentucky ... the Laettner shot ... was the greatest game. And I'm a Kentucky fan.

    QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 02:00 AM) Neyer is a stathead. Clutch, as in getting a clutch DP, is not really a documentable statistic(and I say not really because clutch factors are extremely subjective...case in point, Steve Finley last year in the article that santo posted a while back ago). Defense can be a really difficult to track statistically too, because the statistics can be skewed...such as Jose Valentin having the best zone rating last year and being in the top 5 for range factor. I love Jose, but I will admit that he is not one of the best defensive SS in the league defensively. I still, of course, feel he is undervalued and underappreciated defensively though. Statheads don't know all there is to know about baseball. There is a place and a need for stats, but actually watching a player will tell you more than any stat. Some pitchers have a knack for getting that clutch DP, while others get that deer in the headlights look when they need to get that DP.
  17. Another clutch performance by Joey B. :rolly
  18. There is no way that Rex is "wrong". The umpire called what he saw and that is what he is supposed to do. A rare call? Yes. But, I've seen it called before. Carry over from the Ozzie deal last year? Possibly. But Rex is not "wrong".
  19. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 01:32 AM) Need a W Yep! Gotta stop the bleeding.
  20. The small ball question. I was wondering that also. For example, after we tied up the game in the ninth and had Iguchi at third with one out, why didn't we try and squeeze him home? Ozzie called that play quite a lot in spring training, but I haven't heard of a squeeze attempt since the season started. I know I may have missed, or could be forgetting an instance, but with Timo up, Iguchi on 3rd and one out, I thought that would be a good time to give it a try.

    QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Apr 29, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) I would agree. If the Sox SP is still amongst the best in the league then I see the team going after a bonified closer. Especially if one doesn't emerge from Shingo, Marte, & Hermy, or Viz. I'm sure Mesa will be available amongst others. I wouldn't be surprised if Dye isn't part of the deal. So far he hasn't factored much in the winning. If you're willing to throw in a little cash he becomes very attractive to teams struggling for hitters. Mesa ... no thanks. I want someone as a closer that wants to be on the mound in the 9th inning of Game 7 of the World Series.

    QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) The reason I don't give any merit to what writers write is because they NEVER admit to being wrong. Neyer has done that, though. He admitted to forgetting about Dye as a Sox acquisition this past offseason. Sure, he blame his source, but accepted responsibility for not verifying.
  23. QUOTE(marsh @ Apr 29, 2005 -> 11:47 PM) Dye was hitting off his front foot all nite against that junkballer, then when he finally has an at bat against a fastball pitcher, ozzie pinch hits for him. he pinch hits dye and carl for timo and chris f***ing widger respectively. I don't know why he is taking the bat out of the hands of guys he has had batting third and fifth most of the season. If I'm not mistaken, Carl had been replaced by Ozuna as a pinch runner previously. I know cbssportsline failed to acknowledge that, but I saw it elsewhere. So, actually, Widger was pinch hitting for Ozuna. Understandable if Ozuna cannot grip a bat.
  24. QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 30, 2005 -> 01:13 AM) That is also correct I don't think the Sox will make the mistake of drafting another Boras client unless they honestly believe the kid is signable. I'm talking first rounders here. Later on, one might be worth a gamble.
