QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 09:23 AM) as much as this offseason was very active, and has changed the make up of the team. I still think that this is the season where we enter with the most question marks. The team is totally different, and we are heading in a different direction. Does anyone agree that there is a definite possibility of being really good, but also really really terrible. I don't think we'll be "really terrible" because our pitching looks to be so solid. At worse, we figure to be a .500 team. It could turn out to be a VERY good season, however. Considering what we have tried in the past, this is a good philosophy by the Sox management. BTW ... Welcome to Soxtalk.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 08:04 AM) YASNY, I agree with the summer reading program stuff, but the science, math, and other subjects I have a problem with. If the program is going to really work, the teachers have to be available as well. Whether it is once a week, via email, via phone, or whatever, the rest of the puzzle needs to be there as well. The problem comes from the fact that the "traditions" of our school were established back when we were an agricultural society. Those summer "vacations" were needed so the kids could work on the farms. Of course, that agriculural society is a 100 years behind us and we have yet to adjust.

Let's see here ... The US keeps falling farther and farther behind European and Asian nations in quality of education and our students feel they're entitled to a homework free summer. This is more of an indictment of our national priorities than it is a slap at you guys. That's all you guys know. It's not your fault. One day, our failure to get, and expect, the maximum performance from our youth is going to come back to haunt us.

QUOTE(farmteam @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 10:49 PM) You don't find it funny that they acted like there was a national emergency going on for 1 inch of snow? They don't have tons of salt and snow removal equipment. They also don't have to wait till April for it to melt. They save millions of dollars by waiting a couple of days for a warm up and sunshine. Yet Chicago could have snowpiles in parking lots till late April. Now that is what I find funny.

Personally, I think the current uniforms are the best ever. I don't give a second thought to the Yankees. Ours are traditional, yet modernly cool. The best of both. Leaders: Buehrle, Konerko, Thomas possibly Dye and Peirz

QUOTE(Ishmookie @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 04:42 PM) I like him even though he was a jerk to our fansbut he would be a good backup infielder. why not invite him to st at least? what would it hurt? Hey also pulled some bonehead play in Atlanta ... I don't remember what it was, but the Braves didn't invite him back.
-
QUOTE(Ishmookie @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) With this news id hope that we get him then we need a backup IF. if we get iguchi and maybe a guy like robert fick for 3b, our off-season would be an A. Robert Fick? The ex-Tiger? No f***ing thank you.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 01:15 PM) Where is this Jayson Stark rumor that's being referred to? Is there a link? Thanks. Is it a Jayson Stark rumor? I thought it was a Stark Raving rumor.

QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) How many players make mistakes like that? It was one f***in play! He hit while he was here, he hustles and gives it his all. Im on the KD bandwagon! Let's put it this way ... I still haven't forgiven Jerry Dybsinski (sp?) and I've heard that there some people in Boston who are somewhat upset with Bill Buckner. "Just one play" can be pretty big.

QUOTE(farmteam @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) Yeah, plenty o' snow here. I heard that in North Carolina they got like 1 inch of snow, and the kids had to stay locked down in school, and the parents couldn't get to the school! ROFL! That's funny?

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) Because Kerry made a point to say that his religion guides him and the constitution guides his policy. Bush doesn't get bashed for being religious because he is religious. He isn't even really that religious, he hardly ever goes to church. He gets bashed for being religious because he runs with a political crowd that is quick to wrap itself in the Shroud of Turin every time there's something to feign outrage about. Oh, there's plenty of s*** a conservative can be truly outraged about without having to "feign" it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 10:19 AM) They have brought minor leaguers to Soxfest for years. There is no way they put Burke on waivers to bring him back again in 3 months. I believe the Sox taking Burke off the 40 was because there was the least amount of risk. They had to make room after signing AJ. They also were aware that Burke knows the Sox like him as a player, so it's in Burke's interest to resign with us. If things work out right, I can see the Sox putting him back on the 40 if they feel a need for him on the big club.

I can see the Twins doing this. It would certainly make Houston stronger, which in itself has an upside for Sox fans.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 05:03 PM) I was at FSU for a couple of years and watched them beat Duke both years at home, '02 and '03, I believe, so it's not entirely impossible...Unless it's at Cameron... Anyways, I'm at DePaul now, and this is my first Sox talk post... Welcome to Soxtalk! -
QUOTE(Yoda @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) Dr. Dre, Twista, and The Game are White Sox fans. All three are rap artists. Come to think about it, they may only like the Sox because of the logo. They may not even know there’s a White Sox, but whatever... Real die hard fans, eh?

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 09:38 AM) I would disagree with you. I think that the fall of the Soviet Union and its satellite states are much more complicated than bankruptcy from the arms race, although that was a contributing factor. But sadly, I'm at work and have a headache so that discussion will have to wait until after the blizzard passes. Oh. I'm sure there were other factors. I'll not argue that point. However, I believe that Reagan had a plan and implemented it.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) Nothing. I figured if Drudge could note that, so could I. Just checking to see if you had a point.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 09:27 AM) Reagan aide Peggy Noonan disagreed. See yesterday's Wall Street Journal. Which proves what, exactly?

QUOTE(The Critic @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 08:45 AM) The only "counterpoint" I'd make to any of your post is that aside from assbag worthless morons like Mironov or Fleury, I think the Hawk PLAYERS give a damn about winning. They just haven't been very good. Which is the fault of the organ-I-zation, which I agree doesn't seem to care much if they win or lose, as long as the beer gets sold. A fair and accurate summation of the "mighty" Chicago Blackhawks.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 08:41 AM) Nuke -- prominent sociologists have looked back at the Vietnam war and can find not one published case of an anti-war protester spitting on a soldier. All their research that could be uncovered actually showed most of the belligerance coming at the hands of people who attacked anti-war protesters. Jerry Lembcke published "The Spitting Image: Myth, Media and the Legacy of Viet Nam." In all the research done, there were ZERO cases of soldiers being spit upon. And Nuke, there is historical precedent for not having a lavish party during war time. Just because they raked in $40 mil doesn't mean that it all has to go to his party. I'm sure the donators wouldn't mind that their money assisted the war effort since the GOP has a monopoly on support of the troops. I believe that the spitting on soldiers was a myth as much as I belive the holocost was a myth.

QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) You look to the past for lessons in how to plan the future. I specifically said, because he was acting in a different regime, his actions are somewhat forgivable. However, not entirely. Because Reagan never needed to do that. Its not like the insurgency would have been crushed without CIA training or arms funding, thats like saying that Iraq's insurgency is useless without Chinese or Russian fundage. My argument does hold water. I gave you a specific example of the United States making a short term decision and sacrificing a longer term one. In the case of Reagan, his administration could plead ignorance. But its not an ignorance that our current administration can afford. If you'd like another example, a good one would be the Clinton administration's insistence on keeping bases in Saudi Arabia open, despite the fact that it would have been a better idea politically to move them to Kuwait. Instead of rewarding those who funded the 9/11 plotters, we could have moved to reward those who owe us a huge favor. Actually, Reagan's decision to fund the Afghan rebels did contribute to the overall goal of toppling the Soviet government. The USSR had to keep spending money they didn't have to keep "their Vietnam" going. And as Vietnam did to our troops, Afghanistan drastically lowered the moral of the Soviet military. Reagan's main plan was to out spend the Soviets until their economy crumbled under the weight of the USSR trying to keep up with us militarily. That in itself worked like a charm. I believe Reagan was well aware of the debt his plan would cause this nation to shoulder, but decided that it was worth it to achieve the Soviet collapse. There was no way in hell, I believe, that he could have foreseen what eventually led to 9/11.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 02:18 AM) I got a call about 20 minutes ago from my GF -- it's snowed about 8 inches here since she got to work... She was gonna stay ova here anyway tonight, but a little while ago she called and said she didn't want to clean off her car, could I come pick her up.... I did. I'm an idiot. A gentleman.
