  1. The paper in Dekalb said NIU's junior shortstop, Bobby Stevens, is a projected 6th-15th round pick. He's a nice little player and I've seen him play probably a dozen times if not a few more, but if that is accurate, then I am not the guy a scouting department is looking for because I'd have never guessed he'd be close to that high a pick. We've got a pitcher the Royals took last year that should be picked tomorrow as well. In relevance to the thread though, I talked to a couple scouts earlier this year at an NIU game and they both LOVED our 4th round pick, O'Neil from Penn State, enough to mention him as one of the top relief arms they've seen this year. Supposedly in the Joe Smith mode as BearSox accurately said, and he could move through the system very quickly.
  2. Bah! It's always nice to get the bonus of a Cubs loss on a perfect day in the AL Central. Ah well.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:49 PM) Just terrible pitch selection by Saito. Fukudome was way behind on the fastball, and what does he do...throws him an offspeed pitch right down the plate. Saito seems amazing against just about every team he faces, but he looks like T. Ohka against the Cubs. People just don't pitch to the scouting report against the Cubs, at least when I see them play. It is baffling, but when you watch how dumb people pitch them you see one of the many reasons their offense has been so good.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:40 PM) Ryan Theriot has the best opposite field swing in the majors so far this year. He makes it look very easy. He's a pretty easy out if you pitch him in and throw strikes, but for some reason nobody does.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:38 PM) Oh come on! Kenny has GOT to be in line for executive of the year thus far. Sure, nothing has been won yet. But everything he said about who he's gotten in the last 18 months or so has panned out. Danks/Massett/Floyd/Ramirez/Quentin/Linebrink/Dotel....and I would bet a LOT that Swisher will be fine and rebound into the player we all know he is. Find me another GM that has done so much with so little to help his club in the past 18 months... The Tampa Bay GM would easily be executive of the year right now. And the season is only a hair over 1/3 completed, so let's keep that in mind. Kenny looks brilliant so far in terms of 2008, but emphasis on so far.
  6. Lou brings in Marmol for the 7th for some reason, ends up pinch hitting for him, and unsurprisingly Howry gives up the tying run in the 8th. So Lou is both overusing and misusing Marmol these days.
  7. QUOTE (Shadows @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:57 PM) Why is that ignorant? because you don't agree with my opinion? I think your opinion they wont sweep is ignorant, how do ya like me now!?!?!?! Your fine, your just shockingly wrong.
  8. QUOTE (Shadows @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:54 PM) Because all of you, along with everyone else, are giving Boston no credit what so ever.. I listened to ESPN radio at work all day and it was all Lakers in 5 and all this.. I guess no one remembers Boston was the BEST team in the league this year f*** the Lakers, the Celtics are the better team That's fine, but your statement that the Celtics will sweep was still quite ignorant. They have yet to win a series in less than six games against three teams nowhere near as good as the Lakers. They have homecourt, so nobody would be surprised if they win in 6 or 7, but in 4? Yeah, right.
  9. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 06:00 PM) The Dems "I am always the victim" attitude is really funny when you see all the Hilllary supporters screaming "Sexism!" up against the Obama supporters claiming "Racism!" Quoted for truth, it's been simply hilarious to watch in that regard.
  10. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 04:24 PM) I really HATE the new trend in personality-driven journalism. Amen on that. You honestly can't take in ANY MSM news anymore without an inherent and obvious bias in either direction anymore. It's the reason ratings just plumet year after year among all the news channels, people want the news, not some pompous ass newspersons opinion.
  11. QUOTE (Shadows @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) lol, Celtics are gonna sweep Because they are leading a game that has been close all the way late in the 4th at home? Ok....
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 10:11 PM) I was told tonight that Boras let teams know that if they weren't willing to give Danks first round money, then they might as well not draft him. Good luck with that.
  13. Another day where we were the only team in the division to win (DET was off, MIN, CLE, and KC all lost).
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:43 AM) Eh, for Friday night's game, they are saying "scattered" thunderstorms. Typical summer night type weather, it will be hit and miss. Even if it does storm, it won't last long, probably. I'l be going to that game as well. Yeah, we appear to be firmly entrenched in Chicago summer now, hot and humid and hazy. The weather almost becomes irrelevant at this point (it was supposed to POUR Tuesday and Wednesday and both games were played without delay or incident), just realize it's going to be warm and it might rain at some point, but it'll probably clear up eventually. Not going to see much more "rain out" type rain this season.
  15. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) Great article. I wonder where all the "fire Kenny Williams" people are on this forum this year?? No different than the people claiming Floyd had no talent, these people shouldn't utter another opinion as extreme as these and just shut their mouth because they have been proven wrong. Period. I agree with the Floyd opinions in terms of negativity being over the top about him before the season, but Kenny Williams has yet to do anything this year to prove his critics wrong in regards to this years' team, it's still very early. If we can't win this HORRIBLE division, then the KW critics will be as loud as ever, and rightly so. Hopefully we do win this division though, and people like me will gladly look bad and be happy with the success.
  16. Did what we should do to that team. Now, on to getting 3 of 4 from the Twins.
  17. At the ballpark, it appeared Loaiza was coming in for the 16th last night FWIW. Fortunately, it didn't get that far.
  18. I was there (for all 15 innings, what a strange game) and we guessed it was 475 feet, so 464 seems about right. However, outside of Adam Dunn hitting one into the Ohio River, that was easily the longest home run I've ever seen in person, and it makes me question whether Borchard's ball actually went 504 feet. It almost seems humanely impossible.
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Why on earth would the Sox sign him? Well it's been pretty obvious they really like Masset and the work he's done this year, and we've seen him a few times in the 6th and 7th now. By doing this, you can send Wassermann back to triple a, give the spot Masset used to have (long relief) to Loaiza, and use Masset in the 6th or 7th if you need him or if Dotel needs a night off. Makes sense to me.
  20. QUOTE (SouthsideNorthsideFan @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:43 AM) By what measure? The eye test, which is why I say wait until the end of the year and you'll see the Phillies leading the NL in runs. They are going to very well possibly have 3 MVP's in their lineup by the end of the year with Utley a favorite, and that doesn't include Pat Burrell and his near 1.000 OPS. Their lineup is unreal.
  21. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 12:52 AM) If Oakland can put the Tigers away then DET, MIN, KC & CLE would all of lost tonight. Ask and ye shall receive. This division sucks.
  22. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 05:42 PM) I'd take him for the Bulls. The Flip thing is interesting, since the Bulls originally fired Doug Collins for being a "point a to point b guy" and Saunders is a CLASSIC point a to point b guy.
  23. I'll go with JD to be different since his numbers are so similar to Carlos' outside of RBI's, which are a bit arbitrary since Carlos cleared the bases by the time JD batted, and the defense for #23 was pretty good last month. As for pitcher, that's a VERY tough choice. I went with el titan de bronze because you can't vote for the ENTIRE bullpen (not just the big 3, although they were the best), plus going 3-1 in a month with our offense is an incredible feat.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) Moving Joba to the rotation is such a dumb idea. It kills the Yankees bullpen, as it makes it an 8 inning game instead of the 6 inning game they could make it with Joba/Rivera. Ask any scout, and they'll tell you that Joba was born to be a back-end reliever. For sure. The problem with this move also is this: What is Joba going to start, 20 games? Let's say if they had a generic guy starting those games (just throw out any BS name), they'd have gone like 8-12 maybe? They are 0-1 so far with Joba, and I'll say for the sake of argument they'll go 14-6 in his starts (and that's optimistic IMO). They will lose AT LEAST six, maybe more games, due to his not being there late in the game. Hell, one of them was on Monday night at Minnesota IMO. So not only is it dumb in the sense that he's made to pitch late in games, it's dumb by the numbers too. He got off to a rough start tonight. BTW, Jay Bruce is 3-7 in the Philly series and his average has dropped 39 points. Love that.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) The cubs are so much better than every team in the NL IMO. Its just not close. They are basically an AL club playing in the NL The Phillies aren't far off. They have a better offense (the numbers will bear that out at the end of the day) than the Cubs, they have a dominant #1 followed by mediocrity in their rotation (although they don't have an overachiever that will come back to earth like Dempster, but somebody could get hot). They also have three guys dominating in their pen (Lidge, who might keep it up now that he's out of Houston, as well as J.C. Romero against lefties and Chad Durbin). The real key for the Cubs is the back two guys in their pen. Marmol is being badly overuse by Lou, and his mortality is going to show as the season goes on due to that (if he doesn't get hurt), and Kerry Wood is obviously another key. If that China Doll can stay healthy all the way through October, maybe it is their year. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 11:14 PM) Cubs just making it look easy now. We would too if we had their schedule. As we saw tonight, life is easy against a garbage opponent, even with poor defense.
