Bears versus Packers game thread
whitesoxfan101 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 24, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) The Bears did him no favors by diagnosing it as such. Bears "fans" are going to be intolerable for the rest of the time Cutler is with the organization. I can't believe half the crap I've read and heard about this whole thing. The Bears made a huge mistake calling it a sprain. It's a bizarre situation, he's a guy playing with type 1 diabetes that was sacked nearly 60 times this year, so his history of toughness can't be questioned. But I'm pretty surprised he left the game yesterday, even if the training staff was telling him to. Goes against everything we've seen from him the last two years. I'm not angry, but I am surprised. -
Shocked by this ruling. I'd be more shocked if the SC upholds it.

An MCL sprain? Is that the final diagnosis? Wow. -
I don't think Oney challenging people to a fight on twitter and his girlfriend hitting some guy in the face is a distraction at all FWIW, so this isn't a big story to me. The issue is when the Guillen family madness gets into baseball related stuff. I think Ozzie and KW will keep quiet and play nice this season (unless it goes badly, which I don't anticipate since I really like this team), but it's clear you cant put a muzzle on Oney so in his case, just hold your breath.

Good Lord Cleveland is bad. The Bulls really didn't appear to be trying at any point tonight until the very late run that put the game away.

I think it had been known for a while something like this was coming, it's the only reason Texas stayed in the Big 12 IIRC. The fact is it's a conflict of interests, but ESPN is just one giant conflict of interests anyways. ESPN promotes the NBA ad nauseum because their family of networks has it, and they are trying to completely take over college sports. Even in the case of college sports though, they promote based on league, and how much they cover each league. ESPN is still pissed about the Big Ten Network thing, as Soxbadger pointed out. You'll always notice how much more seriously ESPN covers Monday Night Football than any other game too in terms of the NFL. The network really is laughable, I am like others in that I only watch its game coverage. Other than that, no use watching them.

Detroit is beat up right now (as usual, that's what happens when you're an old team) but still a very good win today. Shots on goal were very deceptive, Hawks had complete control of the game the first two periods, although they got a couple of very fortunate breaks in the 2nd, and just sat on a multi goal lead throughout the 3rd period. Need to get Philly tomorrow and finish off a strong weekend.

Won't miss Mike and Mike on the inside after this year, just way too soft (although Sulllinger is going to dominate a lot of people). Fact of the matter is though, Illinois lost this game because McCamey seemed to forget there was a game. He's been horrendous from the field the last 4 games, and this team can't survive with him playing like that. -
Smart move in the sense that now this won't be yet another distraction during the 2011 season, in addition to the several others that assuredly will pop up. In reality though, Ozzie still won't be back for 2012 if 2011 results in another postseason at home IMO.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 02:15 PM) Just because they picked up his option for 2012 doesn't guarantee he will be the manager next year. It just guarantees he'll be paid next year. Since they sunk so much money in this year's payroll, the extra few million they guaranteed to pay Guillen next season was worth it to assure that Guillen's contract status didn't become a daily distraction throughout the 2011 season. But if the Sox don't win the division this year he probably will and most assuredly should be fired. And if he or his family keep embarrassing the organization, he should be gone as well. Winning will give him more leeway, but there's a limit to everything. Couldn't have said it better myself.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 10:46 PM) gz even John Moon Mullin picking the Pack to win this one. He was one of the few who picked the Bears to finish strong after the bye week. Nobody is going to give the Bears a shot this week. The Packers were the bangwagon jam packed with media people even before the Atlanta game. That combined with the Bears beating a below .500 team will do nothing to change that. It's irrelevant too, virtually nobody picked the Seahawks over the Saints or the Jets over the Patriots either. -

The Bulls are a hard team to gauge other than I think we know they're pretty good. Beyond that? We'll find out in the playoffs. The NBA is all about the playoffs anyways. Unlike other leagues, teams that just barely squeeze into the NBA playoffs really have very little shot at doing anything (outside of unique exceptions like the 1999 Knicks), so the postseason is what it's about anyways.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 17, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, Greg Jennings was quoted saying "I'm more worried about who we going to be playing in the superbowl, not the Bears. We already there , in my opinion we already there, ain't no game to be played Sunday, we already there." Where'd you get that quote? Can't find it online anywhere. -

That's big talk from a guy whos offense scored 27 points in 2 games against the Bears and a running back who has been hurt all year. Keep talking, Pack. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 16, 2011 -> 11:25 PM) NFC Championship will be a bigger rated game than the Super Bowl. No chance in heck that happens. I bet it'll be the highest rated non Super Bowl football game ever though. The NFL has to be thrilled. I bet both title games and the Super Bowl put up some record ratings numbers. All 4 teams left are ratings juggernauts. -
If the sheep are willing to pay those prices, I don't blame the Cubs for charging them. The issue is, like Balta said, that Cubs ticket sales and demand have been on the decline. And based on their prospects for this season, that trend seems likely to continue.

Lol at the people who thought Duke had a shot to make an undefeated run (and they wouldn't have with Irving either IMO). You saw tonight just how hard it is, even in the case of Ohio State and Kansas winning. -

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
whitesoxfan101 replied to Balta1701's topic in The Filibuster
From the sounds of this case, it seems that the shooters anger at Ms. Giffords goes back to 2007, which is before the "heated rhetoric" in politics really began reaching its peak. Also, I still haven't seen evidence that the shooter was any sort of crazy right wing person either. The evidence points to this shooting being a mentally disturbed individual taking out his anger on somebody he felt wronged him (not the first time such a thing has happened), and that somebody happened to be a political figure. Reading into it any further right now just seems to be pure guessing, if not outright inaccurate. Also, I'm not sure exactly how expanded gun control is going to stop stuff like this. If you want to argue it's worth a shot, ok. But I think that if somebody is kooky enough to want to kill somebody, they're going to figure out a way to find the tools necessary to do it. I won't argue with banning expanded magazines though, I really don't see the need to have those legal anywhere. Although I bet this guy would have found a way to find them either way had he really wanted to, legal or not. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:08 PM) I don't get the Collinsworth love by so many people. The dude is a simpleton who said Charlie Whitehurst was "brilliant" against the Rams 2 weeks ago. He's definitely simple, but the vast majority of color guys are. For the most part, they aren't trying to appeal to the higher intellect fans like us, they're trying to make the game easier to understand for more casual fans. Guys like Collinsworth get credit from me because at least they're honest and don't sugarcoat like a lot of color guys do.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) I dont think he was the answer anyways, from all accounts LSU fans don't think much of him. He's obviously very unorthdox, but his record at LSU speaks for itself. I don't really understand why he's so disliked down there. -
Play by play: Doc Emrick, Pat Foley (although he's a little past his prime), John Wiedeman, Sean McDonough, Mark Jones, Wayne Larrivee, John Rooney, Al Michaels and Brad Nessler (same as Foley), Terry Gannon (although few know who he is) Color: Jay Bilas, Gary Danielson, Todd Blackledge, Bill Raftery, Steve Stone (but see Michaels and Foley), Ed Olczyk, Cris Collinsworth I'm sure I'm forgetting some too. I also left Musberger off the list because he's too far past his prime, it's very noticeable. Despite that relatively long list, I must say that I generally dislike more announcers than I like.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 11, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) Les Miles staying at LSU. And Michigan will probably have to settle for Brady Hoke. How the mighty have fallen. Last night was probably as boring an exciting game as I can remember watching. Auburn should cherish every day they have with this title, because you get the feeling they won't have it anymore in 3 or 4 years. I hope I'm wrong though, I would hate to see a National Championship vacated. -
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shot in head
whitesoxfan101 replied to Balta1701's topic in The Filibuster
I'm going to be smarter than most people have been in this case and not jump to conclusions, because nobody knows a thing about this guy other than he appears to be severly mentally disturbed. To try and comment on this event beyond that and the fact that it's an absolute tragedy is ridiculous because we don't have enough information yet to know why he did this, or what might have caused it. I hope the congresswoman can pull through, recover, and someday return to work. This is a unique case because not only does it appear the attempted target of the criminal will survive, but the coward who did this didn't have the opportunity to kill himself, and will now have to face justice. For sure, prayers to all of the victims (those who were wounded and those who were killed) and their friends and family. Stories like this make me sick.
