As a further logical extension, Reinsdorf could really cut costs and protest the present market by shutting down baseball operations altogether. Think of the money he'd save by not having to pay any baseball players at all! Take a deep breath everybody. Just cause we traded an older pitcher on the declining side of his career one year before his contract expires doesn't mean the team the world is falling apart.

I remember the Foulke went through arbitration with the sox some years back. Has anyone else gone through arbitration with the sox since then? I can't think of anyone... but I could be wrong.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:12 PM) Im glad Garcia is gone, because he was a loser in the clubhouse. I was so sick of that s*** of him showing up his teammates. my my my... how quickly we change our tune. Hey, you gonna get one of those We've Got Wood Shirts?... or maybe hold out for a Soriano Jersey?

Bonds had a bad year by his standards. 26 homers, .270 BA, 130 games. I think the guy is rapidly falling apart. He's a liability in the outfield. He can't run the bases like he used to. He's an injury concern. Even if he were Mr. Personality in the Clubhouse instead of Mr. Flesh Eating Cancer, he is surely on the decline baseball-wise. He's not worth what he thinks he's worth... and that can cause other clubhouse problems. This isn't 2003 Barry Bonds. Last year he was a shell of his former self. His skills are diminishing, he's injury prone, he'll be over paid and he's a jerk. oh yeah... sign me up

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 12:48 PM) These guys honestly are taking shots in the dark just as much as we are.... yeah... probably. But their logic seems ok... in theory I just don't see the sox running to make a deal for wells without having a long term commitment from him. Based on the market rate right now, this isn't the time to be negotiating with Wells. In fairness, things could be even worse next year, but a deal doesn't seem likely if its going to cost 1) Garland, 2) Anderson, and 3) 125 million (conservatively) over seven years. I don't care how good Vernon Wells is, considering the value of Garland, it would be about a 160 million dollar signing.... not good when the Jays are going to have to move him at the deadline just to get something in return.

Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez
AbeFroman replied to BobDylan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
To be honest, I sorta doubt there is an impending trade right now. I mean, there's too much risk in taking on these guys without having a deal already in place. Unless this is already a three-way deal and we are only hearing about one-half of it, I don't think another deal is happening right now. -

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 05:30 PM) It's amazing how much his name comes up on this board, and how much hate Pods get(not saying he doesn't deserve it) Look at the numbers folks.... I'm not saying it SHOULD happen. I'm only suggesting that Houston may make us an offer possibly including him. I'm not advocating him, or anyone else on the Astro's roster at all. yeesh...
-
Not sure if this is up on the board yet. Yahoo is reporting that Tim Purpura has been discussing a Trade for Freddy internally in Houston. What would Houston trade to us? Taveras? Lidge? Prospects? Link: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/post/Ho...a?urn=mlb,16939

Denny Matthews should probably get in. On Boers and Bernstien yesterday, they both expressed the sentiment that Hawk should get in... primarily because he's the first announcer in baseball history to be both the Color Guy and Play-by-Play guy. He's pretty much a blend of both. You get the feeling that he could be calling games by himself... which actually isn't too far off from what he does now with DJ (I'm sorry... I just couldn't resist it.)

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 6, 2006 -> 01:23 PM) Which is why Wells will cost $140M for 7 years. yup... and at the risk of repeating about 20 posts before me, its why 1) Vernon Wells will not be playing for the sox this season unless they acquire him on June 30th as a rental.
-
I know so many people hate to compare the sox and cubs. That sentiment is justified. However, let me qualify the following comparison by stating that I am only comparing Wells to the best available OF in this off-season market: Vernon Wells > Soriano

Does Notre Dame deserve a BCS bowl?

QUOTE(Fotop @ Dec 2, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Needless to say, it's good to see some people in this thread (Rex, Krush, to name a few) that can actually step back and objectively analyze ND. I don't know what it is about ND that makes people so angry and/or irrational, but again, I find it quite funny. Are claiming to objectively analyze Notre Dame? If you ask me, my post was much more objective than your overly rosy view of the program. As a football coach, the guy has lost practically every big game in two years. USC, OSU in 2005 and Michigan, USC this year. He did beat Michigan last year, but that was a team that finished 7-5 and out of the top 25. Other than Penn State (8-4) this year, I don't remember ND beating at team that finished in the Top 25 in two years. That statistic seems remarkably average. You can say he doesn't have talent and that he's playing with Willingham's garbage, but he's got an NFL top 5 Pick in Brady Quinn as QB and some damn effective weapons on offense. I don't think its a stretch to say that a LOT of coaches could have done the exact same thing that Charlie Weis has done as a coach at ND. That is an unbiased, truthful statement. I think you have to assess this team in light of its accomplishments. Truth be told, they've beaten up a lot of bad opponents. Considering the pre-season hype, this Notre Dame team and UNDERPERFORMED! They've gotten clobbered by the legit top teams they faced... and they started this season as Number 2 in most polls. I know the recruiting has apparently improved. Fine. I contend that recruiting is improving from the cache he has as coach on the patriots... not from anything he's actually accomplished at ND. The reality remains: 1) They don't have an eye-opening win in two years; 2) They are going to be a 6-12 point underdog against whomever they face in a bowl game which is likely to be another top 25 loss; 3) The defense has shown basically no improvement all year; and 4) The offense loses its All-American QB and WR plus 4 OL starters. -
Does Notre Dame deserve a BCS bowl?
AbeFroman replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Ultimately, ND faced top ten teams twice... twice they were beat by 20 or more points (once at home). If ND wins one of those games, or maybe stays close in one or both, they are a bonafide top ten team. But they didn't. I think there are 10-12 teams that are more deserving than ND. The point was made that Wisconsin had an easy schedule... but at least Wisconsin stayed with Michigan for a while (at the Big House no less). This ND thing is driven by fans of Notre Dame desperately trying to harken back to the days when the Irish were a powerhouse. Sorry guys. They aren't one of the elite football schools anymore. They haven't won a bowl game in 12 years and they've been absolutely smoked by the last three top teams they've faced (including OSU last year). Charlie Weis may have been successful with the Patriots. But the fact remains that Ty Willingham, Bob Davie, or probably 50 NCAA coaches could have led the Irish to exactly the same record they have this year. In my mind, he hasn't done anything to set himself apart as a great NCAA coach yet. -

QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Nov 30, 2006 -> 09:14 PM) That episode was terrible. That prison "scared straight" bit was really unfunny. I like Steve Carrell (sp?), but a little less of him would go a long way. i agree... it was one of the lesser episode of the entire series... much room for improvement

I forgot how long the off-season feels when you aren't in the playoffs. I just want something to actually happen so we have sox stuff to talk about. I'm sick of the speculation

Vincent Price? I bought his Egg Magic game in the 70's! I took it out a couple years back only to find out that I was missing the feet in my Vincent Price Egg Magic Kit. I called the info hotline. Below is a transcript of that phone call: Lisa: Now what do we do? Me: Let's call the company. Lisa: This was made in 1967, they're probably out of business. Me: Well, we'll just see. [dialing] Murray Hill, 5-9232. [the call actually connects; even more surprisingly, Vincent Price himself answers] Vincent: Hello, this is Vincent Price. Me: Oh! It's Vincent Price! I thought he was dead! Vincent: You should know the grave could never tame me! [laughs madly] Me: Oh, Mr. Price! I loved you in "The Abominable Doc ..." Vincent: If you're calling about the missing feet, leave your address, and the replacement feet will be rushed to you by my grandson Jody. Vincent: And now, I must return to the sweet embrace of the crypt. But I'll be back! [ghoulish laughter] I thought Vincent Price was dead when I called. His voice recording was on a message machine... but I'm still not sure if he's dead or not. The whole situation was wierd... like something out of a tv cartoon sitcom or soemthing.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 20, 2006 -> 10:58 AM) They are reporting that the Cubs are now looking to bring in Cliff Floyd to play LF for them. Which will make the OF: Floyd, Soriano, Jones, and could be the worst defensive OF in the NL, maybe the MLB. Who is they? btw... great avatar
-
Doesn't Soriano seem a little bit like Corey Patterson? Both are fast, Both strike out a lot, Both have crappy OBP. The Cubs (and their fans) ran Corey Patterson out of town... They couldn't wait to get rid of him. Soriano is basically Corey Patterson with more power and a crappier glove. I think Soriano is an unbelievable talent (and I always though Patterson had a boatload of talent). He certainly makes the much maligned Cubs much better, and puts them in World Series Competitor category. But Corey Patterson is 5 years younger than Soriano, costs 110 million dollars less, and is a natural outfielder. It strikes me that the Cubs might be better off with Patterson and Zito and Schmidt than with Soriano and nothing.
