COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
If you're God you really couldn't have written a better script than having Ronald Reagan say the four most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the Government..." and then 30 years later you have essentially a situation that can only be solved by strong, steady, good Government. One day perhaps more Americans will realize that the Founders were big believers in Government. And for good reason!

I bought 50 N95 masks back in mid February (was hard to find them even then) planning to either use them or sell them (I paid $150 for the box). After seeing all the PPE news I contacted an ex GF and she helped me donate them (she's a nurse), so I feel good about that. I could have sold the box for $3000 or more. People are paying $50 a N95 mask on clist. Oh well, wasn't the right thing to do.

Until we have testing we're in this fog of war. Lamentably, the Feds are already acting like this is over and we don't need to expand testing. It's insane. As of today the Feds estimate they have tested 64K Americans. Maybe Reagan was partially right, the most terrifying words you can here as a American in a crisis are "I'm a GOP POTUS, and I'm here to help you in a natural disaster".

There isn't a single Democrat that has called for "open borders". Like most fever dreams of the perpetually fantastical GOP this is a myth on par with the "welfare queen" driving her Cadillac to the corner store to buy her prime cuts with EBT. Experts, (something in short supply these days) told Trump that closing the borders would do very little if anything to prevent the spread. But, when all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Trump has a few "go tos" in his political playbook and one of them is jingoism. Closing the border to China did nothing except virtue signal to Trump's core of 38% or so of Americans that back him. Amazingly, the only demographic in which Trump maintains more than 50% support is among white men over 50. Think about that. You're in that category I'd imagine from your posting history. Fair play to you I guess. Anyways, back to COVID: the soft lock downs seems to be working but we have to keep it up at least for another two weeks and likely into May. As we are seeing in Europe quite a few people are getting re-infected but are asymptomatically passing it on to others without antibodies, potentially killing them. Oh, has any single SB owner gotten a relief loan yet? I know I haven't, my bank is dragging their feet.

I have quite a bit of hands on experience with voter rolls. The "voter fraud" claims of the GOP are absurd on the face. Let's start with the fact that when you register to vote you have to put down a home address. In order to commit massive voter fraud you'd personally have to registers hundreds if not thousands of addresses already in your county. You'd then have to go into your polling station, in your district, with either thousands of different people to "cast their vote" or you'd have to come up with a thousand different wigs so you could fool the (granted usually not the most on the ball folks) poll workers and watchers. And every polling station is well watched by attorneys and legal folks on both sides in my experience. It's absurd. As for "mail voter fraud", again, there is a paper trail. If you somehow stole a thousand mailed letters and changed the votes in all of them you'd have to route every letter through the legit sorting system. So I guess not only do you sneak into everybody's mailbox for a month straight leading up to the election you then change the vote and DROP IT BACK IN THEIR MAILBOX FOR THE CARRIER TO PICK UP NOBODY THE WISER. And every single changed vote would be a mail fraud felony. NOBODY IS DOING THIS. What the GOP likes to b**** and moan about is people that don't always vote -- so mostly younger folks and minorities and poorer people -- getting kicked off rolls for inactivity. This mean when they do go to vote, they find they aren't registered because of a needless purge. What most people don't realize is that the voter files themselves are handled by the State but are hardly a secret! YOU can request a voter file and get one for a processing fee. This is not some conspiracy it's in plain sight. I used to process voter files all day long for my job. Most of the folks putting these things together don't know the difference between a PDF and a CSV. If there are mistakes -- like dead folks on the rolls -- it's incompetence, not malice. That the POTUS is up there, without any evidence, claiming massive mail in voter fraud and Democratic voter fraud in general sickens me and is a disgusting Fascist attack on US Democracy. You know who does commit election fraud? The GOP.

"It was one of his favorite phrases and he often repeated it: "after awhile, you could get used to anything". -Camus It will take about a week of games with no fans before everybody has "gotten used to it".

I guarantee you Micheal Kopech out throwing slinging seeds at 100mph against Mike Trout, even in front of no fans, isn't some "bubble season". It's pro sports.

Hello no, I don't get some people. You play 100 games, you win the World Series you're the champs man.

I'd hazard a guess less than 5% of the US population is old enough to remember WWII, it might even be less. If you were 18 in 1943 and served a bit you're now 91. So doesn't really apply.

This is the most bizarre take ever. You'd rather play no games, than play one season with different park effects?

Not sure on that as well but extending the active roster to 30 or even 40 would be helpful.

Of course, which really doesn't have much to do with playing baseball in AZ under strict quarantine and testing. My point wasn't so much that "oh it's all fine now" so much as that if people were dying in the streets, morgues were literally overfilled with bodies and throwing bodies bags into the semis to be buried en masse in central park -- you're going to have a hard time with the optics of baseball and sports and recreation in general. But if the virus is mostly contained in the big cities, death is there but not overwhelming -- you can play sports in that environment.

There will be baseball by July. Book it. NY is stabilizing. WA and CA are already likely on the downside of the curve thanks to the soft lockdowns that were started fairly early. In WA's case very early. They can play all the games in AZ, that makes a lot of sense imo. You cut out 90% of the logistical problems then wrt to the virus and safety.

dude you said one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever read. Honestly the responses were tepid. You basically just described a fever dream you had about the virus and its "cure" to an audience of fairly well read and smart people and got called the fuck out. Don't post absolute non sense and you won't have people "attacking" you. This virus mostly attacks by binding to cells in your lungs and fucking up the semi-permeable membranes that allow them to resupply your arteries with O2. Apparently it has a very interesting protein structure that allows it to bind to cells in the lungs much more efficiency than most coronaviruses, hence why it's more deadly. Hence "novel coronavirus". There is no miracle cure here like go on Twitter and just read the Doctor threads. Millions of doctors are in real time trying to figure out treatments and it's not as easy as saying "it attacks hemoglobin". I mean that's like saying the key to the game will be to outscore the other team.

the shitty anti-virals are at best as good as placebo and come with a chance if kidney failure and blindness. Like, listen to people that have had malaria. You don't want to be taking hydroxochloroquine unless you're about to die otherwise.

Was never a big fan of his pairing with DJ but Ed will be missed. Listening to Rooney and Ed in the mid aughts was about as pure as it got for baseball on the radio.
