  1. Barclay's releases email apparently implicating the British government and much of the British banking industry in artificially manipulating the LIBOR to give the appearance of better political/financial stability during the crisis.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 01:34 PM) I think the entire League is starting to bring the pendulum back a bit from a bit of a dramatic focus on pitch counts. Seems the bigger key is how many stressful innings the pitcher is going through. But innings like Sale was pitching yesterday...he was just cruising...I don't think they worry too much about those innings. Starters innings around the bigs are up about 40 innings per team since the end of the steroid era, but actually down slightly but probably not significantly from last year.
  3. QUOTE (That funky motion @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 01:09 PM) Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA The Knicks have emerged as frontrunners to land Steve Nash in a sign-and-trade deal, league sources tell Y! Sports. Retweeted by Dan Bernstein Expand Reply Retweet Favorite Wonder what they'd have to give up
  4. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) The Sox are pushing their starters more this year than they have in the recent past. That might be part of the price they have to pay to contend. I'm okay with that because while they have had success keeping their pitchers healthy, they have 1 postseason win in the last 6 seasons. Really, they're just pushing their starters about as hard as last year. Full season last year, Starters threw 1021.2 innings, 3rd most in the AL. This year, through 80 games, 502 innings. If Axe goes 8.2 innings today somehow, they'll be on the exact same innings pace as last year. The big difference is of course that they were running 6 starters last year but then had 2 starters who couldn't throw more than 5 innings at a time without falling apart.
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 12:55 PM) Me neither...do we really believe that suddenly we are going to see this vast decrease in velocity and effectiveness once he hits 160 IP? And if we were, would it really matter if we skipped one start here or there or if he pitches an extra inning here or there in a game where the outcome has already been decided? I think at this point you just ride him all the way home and see how fast he can take you...doesn't mean you have to press him unnecessarily, but I don't think saving 12 innings over the course of two-three months is going to make a huge difference. I think the big worry is that if they don't at least show some care with him, if they try to push him close to 200 innings without extra rest throughout the year...the end result will be what we saw in early May...elbow soreness. or worse. There may not be a single line where it happens, but if you can avoid it by giving him a few extra days off...then shoot, why not.
  6. QUOTE (ChrisLikesBaseball @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 12:56 PM) Couldn't find anything desirable to do this afternoon/evening so we grabbed some tickets to the game! Hoping for an American winner! Great view of fireworks around the whole city coming down the ramp after the game ends.
  7. Another Higgs article, with graphs!
  8. Repeat of the summary of the Higgs effect from a few months back.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 12:24 PM) The contrast between the Hawks and Bulls is amazing. The Hawks are out there chasing the top guys on the market. The Bulls are chasing Kirk Hinrich. And the Hawks missed, just like the 2010 Bulls, and have to go spend their money elsewhere?
  10. Take a walk around the concourse. I think they'll give you a signature somewhere for your kid's first game. Go stand in line for some sort of iced beverage.
  11. QUOTE (Wedge @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 11:46 AM) Does it have a big effect on the number of games Sale would pitch? Unless you pitch him Sunday and the first game after the break, would you gain an extra start somehow? Yes, you could do that and get an extra start...but we're already worried about his innigns load...so that seems like the exact opposite of what we are trying to do to protect his arm.
  12. Ravens broadcaster Gerry Sandusky continues receiving quite angry messages.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 11:38 AM) Is anyone else in favor of sacrificing a game in the standings so that Sale can pitch in the All-Star game? He better be the starter if they're going to do that. Again, they're not just sacrificing a start for the AS game. If he doesn't start Sunday, he goes 8 or 9 days at least with 1-2 innings thrown.
  14. QUOTE (G&T @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 10:05 AM) McGwire Was in the NL by 1998. The only guys who screwed him were probably Giambi and Edgar Martinez. Frank wasn't healthy some years and he primarily a DH. Unfortunately he also paid for not being very kind to the media. Thomas put up OPS's of 1.006 and .975 in 1991 and 1992, but did not make the All Star Team. McGwire made both those years, and Palmeiro was there in 91 as well. Frank was then in the high .800's in 98-99, didn't make the AS team, while Palmeiro did. Then had his return season in 2000, 1.061 OPS, first place team, and Jason Giambi started the AS game. And once again, 2003, the same story. Frank hit 42 HR, mid .900's OPS, Giambi was the AS reserve. There's at least 4 years where he was a deserving all star but had the roiders in front of him, and then maybe 2 more if he got the same kind of credit that anyone else got.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 10:15 AM) That's all right. I think Angry AJ is way better for the Sox anyway. Angry AJ is focused AJ.
  16. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 09:48 AM) Could youii name a few of those please? Not arguing, just interested. Palmeiro, McGwire, Giambi immediately came to mind. That's about 10 all star appearances during Frank's run just from those 3. There's also a Mo Vaughn start in there and a Tino Martinez start. Not saying those guys juiced, but Mo wouldn't shock me...and Tino wasn't as good as Frank whether he played in NYC or not.
  17. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 08:18 AM) You guys are not really even close. I'd love to know who we're missing?
  18. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 08:00 AM) I'm sorry, but this is a pennant race, and skipping Sale's turn on Sunday because of the All Star game doesn't sit well with me at all. Especially since he could have easily come out and rested during last night's blowout. If I have to hear "Jose Paniagua" again, I'm going to kill somebody. I don't think they're skipping it solely because of the all star game...they're skipping it also because they're desperate to give him some extra rest. And if he sits on Sunday, it buys him Sunday and Monday off, a brief outing on Tuesday, and then Wednesday off, giving him maybe 1-2 innings over 8-9 days.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 4, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) I know Frank is better, but Konerko will be making his 6th All Star appearance as a White Sox this year. Frank Thomas made 5. Frank might have had 2x that many had there not been 4-5 other 1b who were loaded up on synthetic testosterone.
  20. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jul 3, 2012 -> 09:51 PM) I'd rather not go through 250+ pages, so I'll just ask- has Apple announced when the new iPhone will be released? No. Most assume it will be sometime around October, but that is just an assumption.
  21. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jul 3, 2012 -> 08:44 PM) Why did they trade Lillibridge, a great utility guy and fielder, and Zach Stewart for Kevin Youkilis? They gave up too much. He's not the same player he used to be. Seriously...don't do the jinx with his health!
  22. QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Jul 3, 2012 -> 08:38 PM) If you were KW, would you give Sale a Longoria-esque contract? In 2 years, he might want huge money, but now, they might be able to lock him up for 4-5 more years for around $5M/year. Yes or no? The last guy I thought it would be smart to do that with was 2008 Carlos Quentin. I'm too chastened. Pay the guy in the arb cycle and if he's healthy let him sign his $190 million with the Yankees.
