Probably also worth noting that Mittens has resumed attacking Newt pretty hard, which they haven't really been doing since Iowa, which is a tentative suggestion that they're seeing movement in SC as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) What does the typical Cuban ballplayer get paid in Cuba? Very little. My reasoning there is...even if it's a big salary boost for those guys to sign with a US team, no US team could afford to sign 3-4 of them once the caps come in if 29 other teams also have the same cap to spend.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:51 PM) Despite the caps, I'm 100% serious. I want to open a Cuban pipeline. The caps will make it d*** near impossible for any team to have a single "pipeline" over the next few years.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) SIGN ALL THE CUBANS With the international signing salary cap starting this summer...this isn't the worst idea ever.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) Is Rasmussen's GOP-only polling suspect? I sorta take everything from them with a grain of salt, they haven't had the most accurate record in the last few years and they also clearly try to set narratives by flooding the market with polls, but an 11 point swing over 2 weeks is something that ought to start screaming out.
-
Quasi-GOP pollster Rasmussen has a national poll out today showing a big move for the Gingrich, jumping 11 points from 2 weeks ago. Mittens 30%, Gingrich 27%. That isn't a Carolina poll and Ras doesn't have the greatest reputation, but it is the first poll showing any sort of non-Mittmentum since Iowa.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:12 PM) Illegal? That part I must have missed recently, I'll need to go read up on the latest developments. After they changed the course of the pipeline, there was another required safety/environmental review. The Republicans then, in the bill that extended the payroll tax by 2 months, were allowed to attach a rider demanding that the Administration make a decision on the pipeline by February. This deadline left insufficient time for the mandated review of the new proposed pathway. Thus, approving it would basically have been illegal, and failing to come to a decision would also be illegal. This was of course done so that the Obama Administration's opposition to "Domestic" (thanks Rick Perry) oil production could be turned into a campaign issue.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 02:09 PM) The Red Sox system may be deep, but it really lacks impact players of any type, and most of the appealing prospects are from last years draft and not eligigle for a trade yet. Technically they could be PTBNL'd at this point, but the Sox aren't likely to let a guy sit in the Sox's system for the first 3 months of the season while they wait.

Argument for not having all INTL players part of June draft

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 01:16 PM) FYI I believe fair use standards also state that you can only excerpt the first couple of paragraphs and not reprint the entire article, but IANAL and I could be wrong. Typically that is also true, but most people will look past that as long as you include a link. However, the SOPA legislation, if passed, would change that, and even doing that would be enough for this web page to be permanently shut down. -
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 01:36 PM) Thats good but from the White Sox perspective would you want a few lower level guys for Floyd? Seems like completely giving up which I don't see KW doing especially with the V-Mart news. No team is likely to give up MLB-ready top flight guys for Floyd. Either you have to target lower level guys or you have to target a guy who you think you can turn around if you want to hit a major score.
-
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) I would think the BJ's would be a better fit because of their young, but more advanced pitchers. (Drabek, McGuire, Hutchison) But maybe AA is being difficult so good for KW to go to a rival and drive up the price. Think about the post again.

Does Cust take 1b for them or just become a pinch hitter?
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 01:43 PM) 3. As far as Keystone goes, I will be surprised if ObamaCo does indeed outright reject it. But I could be wrong on that one, we will see. With the way the law is currently structured, the Republicans actually made it illegal for them to approve it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) Omar cost over double what Teahen would. Last year his OPS with the Sox was only 0.010 higher than Marks. I have little problem paying $1 million for a veteran on the bench if that's the way the Sox decide to go. $2-3 million I start getting iffy.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) Not opening up the public situation of having to "fix the glitch" so to speak. Huh?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:51 AM) Whoops, read "will present" and expanded it larger than it really meant. Yeah, that's what Ha'aretz is saying they will present as their assessment in private to visiting U.S. defense officials. Not a public statement. I believe that Barak did have a public statement yesterday saying that an attack would be a long way away if it happened (see here).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) If you are looking for useful, you have to spend money. We got useful out of Vizquel without having to spend money.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) eta I'm not sure what meta political victory Israel would be gaining from openly stating that they do not believe Iran is actively pursuing or attempting to pursue nuclear weapons. At least that article, btw, is a "Leak", not "openly stating".
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) The really sad thing is that Mark Teahen is a guy who'd fit here. I wonder if he had an issue with just the Guillen clan, or the organization in general. The Sox would only be obligated for the minimum as Toronto is paying for his deal this year. He'd fit here if he could play...at all. Last 2 years he simply hasn't been useful.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:43 AM) I was just about to say their actions and their words don't add up. But then again Israel is about as big of a liar as there is on the world stage. How long did it take them to admit they had the bomb? Technically they have never publicly done so, because under the terms of the Nonproliferation Treaty, the rest of the world would be compelled to impose substantial sanctions on them I believe.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:39 AM) Right. The only way I see another LH bat signed is as a bench player who could also slip into the DH position if Dunn tanks. But, would the Sox even consider spending $5+ million on the likes of Damon or Matsui to have them be a bench player? Way too much money to spend on the bench. I'd much rather save that $5 million for next offseason.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 10:29 AM) I agree the team needs a more potent left-handed presence, but if the Sox were to go out and sign a value-veteran to fill that roll, at what position would said veteran play? Dunn already fills the gap at DH (I'm not saying anything about his performance, I'm just saying he's already the power lefty at DH). First base? An outfield position? Or maybe 3rd? Beyond that, who is available right now? And right now, all of those positions are filled.
