2011-2012 NCAA Basketball Thread
Balta1701 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:52 AM) I think we're finding out that they go a legit 7 deep, maybe 8-9 (OSU, MSU, ILL, IND, MICH, WIS, PUR, NW, IOWA/MINN on the bubble). Really only PSU and NEB are bad. Probably no national title contenders in the bunch, but maybe a couple of deep tourney runs if teams are playing well in March. Remember though, this is the NCAA tourney we're talking about. Very few years are the final 4/final 2 composed entirely of "National title contenders". -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) If Adam Dunn stops hitting like the worst player in the history of MLB, then yes, absolutely. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:47 AM) Yeah, you really need to think about 2013 here, because that is what KW is building towards. Andy Wilkins may be ready by then. But more importantly, you'll know by then if Dunn's situation was a one-time problem, or if he is truly done. No point in spending on some filler LH bat right now. And if Adam Dunn continues hitting like the worst player in the history of MLB and doesn't also retire, then the White Sox will have to decide whether they want to spend money on a LH bat next offseason or whether they just want to throw in the towel on another season and wait for Dunn and Rios's contracts to be up.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:24 AM) That's my point. There isn't a potentially potent left handed bat in the entire organization, that is even close to being Major League ready. Why do we need a potent one?
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) That something had better be a whole heck of a lot of draft picks. Jameer Nelson has negative value, and Redick doesn't exactly build for the future. To deal their one main national and local draw, they'd actually have to get something of value back. However, the Magic have nothing of value beyond Dwight. Do the magic have any draft picks that they're sitting on?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 11:57 PM) Don't need another young superstar on the Northside....we need our own to counter with. Second, probably right....past mistakes won't be held against Epstein. But how long will it take before JR opens up the purse strings again on any player (besides Danks) from outside the organization making $10+ million per season? If we don't make any salary adding moves, we're going to be sitting close to $80 million in payroll next year once Peavy and Pierzynski and Thornton's contracts end. So, I'd say next offseason we'll be in that market, depending on who succeeds and who collapses this year. -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 10:25 PM) That's from last year, right? Eh, yesterday was his 70th birthday, so I went with it. -
If the projected lineup holds and everything is working, we really don't need a LH bat, because we have De Aza, Dunn, and AJ in the normal, everyday lineup. We could use a LH backup somewhere. Do any of the minor league backup IF's fit that billing?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 09:08 AM) This is going to be about money. I full expect us to be outbid on both of them. I wouldn't sign these guys at the prices being floated.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) There's only about 4 or 5 teams where he would be a clear upgrade or where there is no young QB starting already. Their problem though is that taking Smith out of the spot where he finally showed some comfort is risky too, so he'll probably still wind up in SF...but there will be competition. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 07:19 PM) That would put his value at about $25 million. Ryan Howard won his first year arb at $10 million after an MVP season, an that was years ago.

I bet Kershaw wins that one.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 06:08 PM) Biggest shock If you were starting a franchise and could sign any player, who would it be? T1. Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City -- 37.0% T1. LeBron James, Miami -- 37.0% 3. Derrick Rose, Chicago -- 14.8% 4. Dwight Howard, Orlando -- 7.4% 5. Dwyane Wade, Miami -- 3.7% How is that shocking? That Wade got 3.7% (aka 1 GM?)

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 05:29 PM) Is this actually true, or just George Lucas marketing? He definitely has $100 million or so of his own money in the picture after being turned down for years by every other studio out there.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) Interesting, never heard anything about this, George Lucas' last feature film....RED TAILS, about Tuskegee Airmen/WW II http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine...amp;_r=1&hp It's been advertised heavily here in the states, but no major studio would pick up the film because they didn't think it was marketable overseas, as the cast is almost entirely African American.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 03:37 PM) At this point I think they have to resign him, and I dont see him wanting to go anywhere else considering Harbaugh resurrected his career and believed in him when basically nobody else did. Clearly they can't franchise tag him though. -
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 03:13 PM) First 2 packages won't happen. They are both drastic overpays. If we don't get a solid overpay for him, there's little to no reason to move him.

The Final night of the Democratic National Convention will once again take place in a football stadium, trying to fill 74,000 seats. Somehow though, I think there's going to be more said about the fact that it will be happening in "Bank of America stadium."

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 12:07 PM) I wanted to like Alcatraz, but I felt like everything was a little "too" convenient for the cops. I didn't feel like it was nearly as smart as a lot of similar shows. Yeah, I get that "Too convenient" feel also, but there's also a hint of a reason for that already.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 11:51 AM) I'm not sure how you are breaking any connections there. Auto-debit or one-time debit, that account info is in their system now. Which by the way is also a reason to use the credit card (when you can) instead of the checking account. Replacing a compromised credit card is a pain, but it pales in comparison to the nightmare of money being taken of your bank account and trying to make that change. But I see what you are saying about putting in that manual review step. I do it via financial software every few days across all accounts... you do it once a month focused on each account. Either way, the review is valuable. The other big thing is that if a Credit Card gets compromised, it's the banks money that is being stolen. They can try to get it from you, but they're going to do whatever they can to make sure it doesn't get stolen from them in the first place. If your money gets stolen from your bank account, yeah they kinda care, but they're not liable for the losses.

QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) I am hoping be exceeds those expectations. I'll take an .800 OPS for a guy with his defensive skills and reasonable salary. I don't remember hearing anything about his defense before has came up. Just for comparison, Joe Crede's highest full Season OPS was .826 in 2006 and in 2005 it was .757. Joe was clutch! I'm sitting here smiling as I remember his home run in extra innings late in the season vs. Cleveland. Awesome. I'm not sure if Morel will have that much power, but he has it .320 at almost every level. I think an nice .300 average would help the Sox lineup that seemed to be all or nothing at times. Everything positive about him was about his defense since AA. He's been expected to be a plus defender. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 17, 2012 -> 12:16 PM) JonHeymanCBS Jon Heyman hamels signs for $15M. #phils Is that a 1 year arb avoiding deal?
