QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) I see dead people...................voting. http://www.drudge.com/news/152326/900-dead...-sc-voter-fraud 900 Dead People Voted In SC. Voter Fraud Suspected How much you want to bet that the subsequent investigation which finds no voter fraud but instead finds that 900 errors out of 2.7 million possible registered voters is not a high number when you don't put much money or training into operating your election system will receive much less press than this outrage? The usual explanation is that voters wind up either having names that are similar/identical or they wind up signing their n ame on the wrong line and the politician who wants to make a splash totals up the numbers and puts out the press release before doing the double-check. Edit: Turns out that when questioned on that number, the Attorney General in SC didn't know what he meant by "recent elections". It's not over 1 single election, it's over several, and he couldn't tell how many, he just needed the sensational claim.

Honestly, I have no idea how good of a coach Weber is, I really haven't paid attention the last few years. All I know is that surviving the last 3 years for IU as a coach and building a program that has a future, from where they started with, is d*mn near a miracle, and I'm going to defend that guy for a long time for doing so. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 01:44 PM) I think their point may be that you have alternatives to Mercedes and Dish/Direct. With music, the RIAA basically controls the entire industry and sets prices. And in basic economics, prices are set by competition between the alternatives. Copyright protection by definition is the removal of basic economic competition.

The one thing worth remembering though...the good news if there is some...there's a whole lot of money, and even more potential, in the companies that are able to exist because those laws haven't passed.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 09:20 AM) Like presidents, managers receive too much credit and too much blame. IMNSHO Ozzie lost in a battle with KW for the affections of the boss. The last season here was a nightmare for everyone. Too bad we couldn't of had a nice going away party and have everyone stfu. But, Oz, and his supporters felt the need to defend him. His detractors smelled blood and piled on. Both sides exaggerating, these exaggerations are the fuel that feeds this fire. There hasn't been a comment close to reality in months about Ozzie. And Ozzie is one of the few managers that seems to view entertainment as part of the game. I kind of like him for that. He never was, and I hope he never becomes, and autobot. Spewing cliches or issues no comment. Ozzie is a better than average MLB manager with plenty of players that like him and will play hard for him. No manager is right 80% of the time because human players have to take their decisions and make something happen. Ozzie isn't the greatest WS manager of all time, but certainly not even near the worse. Too bad the season hasn't started or we can switch our attentions to what an idiot the current manager will be. And before someone gets all feisty, y'all know we eventually call every mananger an idiot. You know what's bothering me the most about this post? It's the part I bolded. First of all, how f***ed up is it that the manager and GM are "having a battle for the affections of the boss"? That sort of thing is complete crap. Their job is to do their job. And in multiple years in a row, it hasn't happened. And it hasn't just been a 1 year nightmare. The guy who got the owner's affection the year beforehand was the manager, he got the soft hitting DH he so wanted, and it wound up being a disaster just as much.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 11:30 PM) I love, love, love driving in the snow. It's not a hard concept. The problem is 99% of the world is a bunch of p*****s and drives 4 miles an hour and doesn't make lights. People suck. However, driving home from the bar tonight felt like GTA on steroids. I heart driving in snow. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 12:44 AM) thats the exact problem. I've lived in one of the top 5 snowiest cities in the US for 4 years (syracuse) and never once had an issue driving in the snow (4WD ftw), but the issue is the idiots that put my life in danger on the expressway because they're scared to drive. people slipping and sliding through stop signs, red lights, etc. its absolutely insane. not to mention the pig parallel parkers in the snow that will swipe the paint off of your car and leave it, thanking raptor jesus that they were able to manage to get their car in the spot by any means necessary. See, I don't get this at all. At least in my view, if you're going to drive in the snow, you have to drive like you are scared. If you're not scared to drive, then you wind up going to fast into a stop sign and that's how you wind up slipping and sliding through them. If it's snowing, I'd rather creep up to a light then wind up being unable to stop and slipping my way into the intersection. I've got a hill I have to go down by my house and it's almost impossible to stop at the bottom of it if I'm going m ore than 10 mph when I get to the top. And if it's snowing on the expressway, I want to be the guy staying in the right hand lane and letting everyone else pass while I watch them, rather than having to change lanes a lot or break/accelerate a lot.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 12:28 AM) Crean had bad recruits for two years? He had practically 0 of his own recruits for two years. You do realize its hard to recruit at one school, then leave for another and keep recruiting the same kids (ones who are not good enough for a school like Indiana in the first place) and convince them this is the school for you, even though you just left the one you were recruiting them too.... Oh man, it's not just that either...he also had 3 years of lost scholarships to contend with, a roster with no seniors for 3 years, and for his first 2 years, he was basically recruiting people with the understanding that they might get lucky enough to make the tourney once in the next 3 years. Crean was in an utterly untenable position when he came in. Anything he pulled off out of those 2 years that was useful is practically a miracle. -

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 11:09 AM) Hardly, I'd be more than willing to get rid of him if this team collapses like it did last season. I just fail to see the logic in counting his first two years at Indiana. After this season, this alum will be very angry if Crean is replaced, no matter what happens the rest of the year. -
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 12:41 PM) I am unfamiliar with their farm system. Who do they have that we can make a difference for us in the near future? Near future? Very little.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 21, 2012 -> 08:40 AM) I'm confused by the I'd buy more if it were cheaper comments. Are y'all suggesting pirating is less of a crime because the prices are too high? I'd have a Mercedes G Series in my driveway if the price was cheap enough. I'd have Dish and Direct if the prices were cheaper. I'm not certain what y'all are driving at. Tex, I'm going to assume you're trolling here, but I'm going to do the comparison anyway. I want a car. I have x number of dollars to spend on a car. If the Mercedes is higher than that amount but the used car is less, I purchase the used car. I want entertainment. I have x number of dollars to spend on music. If the music I'd like to purchase is priced higher than what I am willing to spend, I can't simply purchase a version of it to do the same job at a lower price. I'm effectively unable to purchase anything. And furthermore, the cost of producing 2 cars is probably similar, even if the price is different. The cost of producing an additional copy of entertainment is virtually zero in a digital world...the cost is the same whether I purchase the product or not. That's the definition of a deadweight loss. To repeat the clause you skipped earlier:

Boston would have to freaking overwhelm the Sox before the Sox pick up a large portion of G's contract. The White Sox paying for another team to try to win the AL? Yeah, no.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 07:35 PM) apparently, i am the only person left that still pays for music. i'm kinda surprised. I pay for it also. I still prefer cd format even. I'd buy more if it were cheaper. Hence...deadweight loss.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 04:28 PM) They are lending a bought and paid for item. Again, I am fine if someone loans someone a download as long as only one paid copy exists. The problem becomes when one paid copy is then copied and now there are 1 paid copy and hundreds or thousands of unpaid copies out there. It seems like an obvious difference. People buy because they want ownership and being able to use something when they want to. If the library has the item checked out they would have to wait. Plus libraries sometimes trim their collections and the item is no longer available. Should Xeroxing large sections of a textbook be a crime?

QUOTE (vandy125 @ Jan 20, 2012 -> 03:49 PM) Stealing is stealing regardless of who you take it from... Should the guy who had a lobster at KWs should feel better because of how much KW has? But who owns an idea? If the guy recited shakespeare while stealing that lobster, isn't he also stealing shakespeare's work? We've given types of art a unique place in the law already. You can't physically rob me of an idea or of a song I sing at gunpoint. But we've declared that certain ideas can be under control for certain time periods under certain conditions because it generates an economic and cultural benefit. Intellectual property isn't open and shut like stealing a lobster.

The Supreme Court has unanimously struck down the court-drawn Texas Redistricting map. They continue to agree that the initial map is a violation of the voting rights act, but the majority suggested that the redrawn map should not be a completely new map from the start, but should instead try to fix the original map, giving some deference to the original legislative process.
