Official 2010-11 NFL Thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:38 PM) Haha Panthers fans have to deal with Clausen, Luck is returning to school Link? Anyway, if I were an underclassman, I'd do everything possible to stay in school this year, since I might go pro and wind up sitting around tossing rocks next year.

Strange but unsurprising definition of fun.

Maybe everyone's intently listening to the reading of the Constitution.

alexei and beckham
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) Has that changed with having a real base stealer as a leadoff hitter? He hit behind Podsednik in 2009 when everyone knew Podsednik was running every time he was on base, and in 2009 the Sox #2 hitters had the lowest %age of fastballs seen of any #2 hitter in the league. I checked this stat a while ago.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 10:15 AM) I'd kick the tires on him, and give him an invite to spring training. You've got nothing to lose. 29 other teams can say the same thing though, and the Sox have at least 1 guy in AAA who they want filling the 1b/3b role, and another nearly-washed-up AL West castoff there as well.

Rafael Soriano signs with Yankees
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 11:05 AM) I'm somewhat baffled that he isn't being pursued more aggressively by teams? Why is that? Admittedly I haven't been following the guy over the years but his numbers are quite impressive. I think there are a number of factors. First, I think a lot of teams are nearly tapped out on money. Secondly, a lot of teams are realizing that it's cheaper to sign a middle reliever, develop 2 other middle relievers, then turn 1 of them into the closer, than it is to actually sign a closer. Third, I think Soriano in particular makes teams a little iffy, because he has a recent injury on his record; missed most of the 2008 season. He's 31 years old now, and his agent is Boras.

Frank Hall of Fame chances
Like it or not, the other thing that hurt Martinez was playing in the middle of nowhere (Seattle). If he'd been the Martinez who went to the Yankees, he'd have been in.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:04 PM) Alexei crushes fastballs. Should be him then. Why? Being in the #2 spot has historically not gotten him any extra fastballs.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 30, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) The article I saw about it said they asked someone from the reporting agency about seasonal or other effects, and they felt that there wasn't a significant shortage due to any of that. Hard to say for sure though. We'll see next week. 409k this week.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 04:22 AM) Dolphins prepared to pay Harbaugh $8M??? Good lord, that's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't proven s*** at the NFL level. He has done a fantastic job with Stanford, but this seems crazy to me. I knew he'd get paid a lot, but didn't realize it would be that much. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2011/...arbaugh-8m.html I bet that's a Harbaugh's side leak.

So, if you love a good conspiracy theory, what emotion do you feel about that one?

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 07:57 PM) See, this is where you get into trouble by trying to apply things written in the Constitution to more current or modern events, developments, thoughts, philosophies, etc. Yes, you can usually find a way to tie in the spirit of the Constitution to cover the ever-expanding list of freedoms and persons and everything that comes along with social and cultural development as societies and cultures mature. But eventually, a few years pass, and something else happens that calls into question these ideas, and scholars or judges go back and analyze the letter of the law and discover, why, low and behold, it was never in the letter of the law to begin with! Why have we been applying this Amendment to such and such a group this entire time? I really believe you have to allow the legislators to do their job, and that is where I agree with Scalia. Let's face it, while the Constitution is an amazing, beautiful, thought-provoking and groundbreaking document, perhaps decades ahead of its time, it has been drafted and amended by men who had no way of anticipating the rapidly evolving and changing world in which we live in now. It needs to continue to live on in spirit, but we can't look for, or try to stretch it to mean or intend things it simply never did. That's what our legislators our here for now. This is why we elect them and pay them. You realize that the whole reason why I brought that up is that Scalia, along with the other 4 Conservatives on the court, use the fact that Court has decided that corporations have more rights than people (or, in Scalia's case, women), and they used that decision to overturn a century of actions of Congress and decisions by previous Courts?

Matt Klaasen on Adam Dunn
QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:33 PM) One of the first comments on that article basically explains Dunn's changed approach, explaining the Nats hitting coach wanted him to have a more aggressive approach. I remember the Reds did the same thing when he first came up for a couple of years, and he struggled then too. Hopefully Walker leaves him alone. Here's the article the fangraphs commenter linked. http://www.masnsports.com/the_goessling_ga...roach-work.html Oh come on, we want Adam Dunn lifting and pulling!

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:42 PM) I think he was on some list that leaked. But I'm not 100 percent sure to be honest. I think that was the fake mitchell report list that came out 2 hours before the real one.

It will cost approximately $1 million in taxpayer dollars for the Republicans to read the Constitution aloud on the floor of the House.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 06:45 PM) 11-7, 2.46 ERA, 158 Ks in 153 2/3 innings from May 30 through the end of the season. Even more impressive was that he allowed only 120 hits in those same amount of innings. Man the D-backs front-office has really dropped the ball the last 3-4 years. That team had dynasty imprinted all over it. Who else have they traded/let go who has gotten better after leaving? I've got 1 name, Carlos Quentin, and he only had 1 really good season. Who else am I missing? And the Haren trade really doesn't count, because Haren was actually good in Arizona. That team had dynasty imprinted all over it, but year after year, the young guys they'd count on to start that dynasty would struggle. Either Upton would have a great year and Young would struggle, or Reynolds would have a great year and Upton would struggle, or Reynolds would have a good year and Webb would blow apart his arm, and Stephen Drew really has never lived up to hype.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 06:32 PM) People are convinced Bagwell juiced. I don't know why, but they are. That seems to be holding him back somewhat. I believe at least 1 reporter did accuse him of being a user a few years ago. To be honest though, this is one case where having the full official name list from the 2003 tests could really help a player, if he's not on it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 4, 2011 -> 08:04 AM) Oh Scalia... Women Do Not Have Constitutional Protection From Discrimination If the 14th amendment does not give equal protection under the law to women because that was not the original intent of that amendment, then why does the 14th amendment give equal protection under the law to corporations?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 06:05 PM) That. We have everything to be excited about in 2011, but now Dan Hudson is the new Chris Young. Ergo...Edwin Jackson is the new Javy Vazquez? We're doomed.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 05:53 PM) It's not like guys like Spud Webb and Nate Robinson dunk(ed) all day long, but they've supplied some pretty memorable moments. Jennings has at least 2 inches on Robinson and 4 on Webb.
