  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:29 PM) Yes, as well as Kannapolis. So, you're saying it's the perfect time to send Viciedo to one of those 2 spots for a few days?
  2. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) Agree, and I wouldn't want to trade for Prince anyway. Borass is going to make sure that no matter what the Yankees, Red Sox (especially), Angels, Dodgers (ownership issues but Manny's off the books soon), Mets, etc. all get involved. No way we'd ever get a negotiation window. If you offered him straight up 8/$200+, you might get him to sign without much worry.
  3. Hypothetically...if Rios does need 3 offdays out of 6 days, isn't that the point of the rotating DH?
  4. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:38 AM) There are also a lot of people who are going to run out of unemployment. I am talking about the long term unemployed who really are going to be hard pressed to find a job anywhere near the levels of income they had before. I would suspect the extended unemployment insurance program has also kept foreclosure rates down. This will, likely, also add to the foreclosure rate in the near future. Thus putting more existing homes on the market and lower prices. Additional supply with a fairly weak demand. Of course, extending unemployment insurance at a time of extremely high long-term unemployment is usually argued to be an extremely effective method of stimulus per dollar...
  5. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) but also keep in mind that it pushes down demand for months post government stimulus. it's not an effective, as you mentioned, or sustainable solution. I totally agree and I didn't like the tax credit as effective stimulus, but I won't deny that it had a measurable impact.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) And the articles you see from bankers and realtors state that the shadow inventory has been diminishing - that they are processing more and more of them. This is good in the long term, now that they are accelerating their pace, but not putting them all out in a huge wave. Link
  7. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) i hope that was a joke Not at all. The surge in buying that started last fall probably wouldn't have been nearly as big had the government not dumped in truckloads of cash. Not that it was the most effective method of stimulus, but when the government ponies up $20 billion or so, it's going to have an effect.
  8. You can't send him down without him accepting it. He could force the team to release him and buy out his whole contract instead. (edit; that includes next year's salary as well).
  9. Is Rios hurting or tired? He's still hitting .316 the last 7 days, although his OPS is below .700 because of no HR/doubles. I'm just wondering why he needs last saturday off, Monday off for the offday, and then Thursday off.
  10. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:23 AM) Kotsay probably lit up Lowe in a game 10 years ago, so it makes sense he'd be hitting 3rd. 4/14 career against him with 4 walks, .769 OPS.
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) Kotsay hitting third is just...BLAH. That's a hard earned lineup promotion right there.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:21 AM) Yup, something is clicking. Maybe he just decided to ignore Greg Walker? Maybe he started listening to him?
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:19 AM) Lopez can't play superstar defense... He's alright, but nothing spectacular. And he also doesn't like walks, which is a problem... His .588 OPS would still be an upgrade from Beckham.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:14 AM) And it looks like the pitches Carlos has hit for home runs these past couple of days have been pitches up in the strike zone. This is really good news considering Carlos is a dead low ball hitter. Yet, he's hitting the high mistake pitches hard, something he didn't do before this year. You'll note too that he's hit inside pitches out to LF twice and an outside pitch out to RF last night, so he's legitimately hitting the ball everywhere.
  15. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 11:06 AM) Foreclosures are up sharply. But you are right, foreclosed homes should be sold first, as it is necessary for a market correction. The good news is that delinquencies are going down. There's a reason why foreclosures are up sharply...for about a year, banks have been putting off foreclosures for people because they can't sell the home if they foreclose on them. The term that has become commonly accepted for this is "Shadow inventory", they are houses that will be on the market but that banks have kept off the market to avoid the double-whammy of depressing housing prices further and taking the financial hit to themselves. If the people keep living in them, the people basically get free rent on the bank, but the bank gets the benefit of the house not sitting vacant and general upkeep/usage being done. They started pushing more Foreclosures earlier this year because their financial situation has improved and because, thanks to the government intervention, the housing market somewhat stabilized and could absorb some portion of the hit.
  16. The ability of the human mind to compartmentalize seemingly contradictory ideas has always amazed me.
  17. The Commonwealth Fund, a non-profit who appears to be genuinely non-partisan (their board includes investment bankers, the president of the Salk institute, university professors, a guy from the top of Kaiser, etc.) has a comparison study out on the status of 6 nation's health care systems through the year 2007. The U.S. comes in dead last, being by far the most expensive and by far the least effective, even for people with insurance, let alone the people denied access.
  18. Surprised y'all didn't post this.
  19. If it wasn't for what was going on in the gulf, this would strike me as half exciting and half "WTF"?
  20. QUOTE (Tex @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:53 AM) Especially if there isn't a Walmart in the neighborhood . . . If you're a restaurant buying your supplies there you deserve to go out of business.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:41 AM) To be fair he is typically very solid in the field. Yesterday was just one of those days. Could be carrying his bat struggles into the field with him.

  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) You'd think they would just have a universal recipe. Uno's in Florida is awful. It's really a shame. Even if they have a universal recipe, think about the supply chain. If you want to do things right, you need things like tomatoes, dough, cheese, sausage. You may have a local supplier in Chicago that you use all the time, but then what does your shop in Florida do? You can ship stuff from Chicago, but you're stuck canning or freezing stuff to do that, or you can find local suppliers for fresh stuff but they're never going to be the same.
