Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin
Kopech's usage was insanity done by a madman, but he was able to stanch the bleeding in game 3. Bummer was desperate for a defender being in the right position.

I know it's Hahn speak, but that sounds to me like he's talking himself into keeping Kimbrel.

Jeeze that would be a helluva lineup. Who did they get in the IF to replace Semien's spot?

Sox sign 2B Josh Harrison (1 yr, 5.5M; club option; 1.5M buyout)
You're right, Spotrac has the option counting as this year's. It's $5.5 million. My bad.

No, a buyout would count against next year's.

Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin
Seemingly the Braves thinking "They cannot or don't want to afford FA prices" is probably telling us something.

Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin
So let's see, assuming extra pitcher, the bench as of now is: Leury/Harrison Engel Romy Collins With someone else making the team out of the gate due to Anderson's suspension (Burger?). If an extra OF is signed, the bench becomes: Leury/Harrison Engel Collins Vaughn/Pederson With Romy or an extra pitcher making the roster out of ST. I guess that's decent depth having Romy in the minors.

Well Kimbrel to Velasquez is an upgra....oh wait.

White Sox Sign RP Joe Kelly (2yrs with a club option; $17m)
Well, if they trade Kimbrel they will still have bullpen room if they want to use it. That would be: Hendriks, Kelly, Graveman, Vasquez, Lopez from the right side, and they'll probably carry an 8 man bullpen, so there would be a 6th spot if Kimbrel were moved.

Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin
The tweet saying he was signed was by an unverified account with only a handful of followers. I would believe this is much more accurate.

There’s something about Freeman and the Braves org that we don’t know.

White Sox Sign RP Joe Kelly (2yrs with a club option; $17m)
For a team with Anderson, Eloy, and Hendriks on it, the number of people who seem to think the white Sox need more energy is rather interesting.

Sox Sign Vince Velasquez
Do they have a firm schedule for the first week yet? Any off days?

There’s also enough other options on the market that Boras’s side knows that once one team is serious and done playing the waiting game, if he doesn’t get it done they will move to someone else.

I think you do that and it gets done pretty quick. Maybe tweaking the dollars a little bit. That’s got to be where the market is for this player. If I have to put in a couple more million somewhere to finish it, oh darn I can’t sign a Velasquez next year? Boras asks high, but not insanely so. This player hasn’t earned anything like a 6th year or a $140 guaranteed.

Have you noticed how every time someone says “I wouldn’t go near that”, that’s pretty close to what a guy gets? If you want to get this done, with this many teams interested and everyone with money under the tax, I would say you’re probably going to have to go above $100m, so 5/$110 with an opt out after 2.

Or you could just recognize that this won’t be cheap and pay the price of admission like professionals.

Every dollar that you give a guy counts against the luxury tax. To get Keuchel off the roster with a buyout of his full contract would leave every cent counting towards the CBT. The only way to get space is to trade a guy's salary to another team. For example, if the White Sox wanted to send Vera and Keuchel to Pittsburgh or Miami, with the other team taking on the entire contract, that would clear $18 million in luxury tax space. If the White Sox sent Keuchel to Pitt along with Burger and the White Sox paid 1/2 of the remaining $18 million, then they would clear $9 million in space. What the White Sox pay counts against the Tax. (Numbers intended only as examples, not as realistic deals).- Sox Sign Vince Velasquez
I would have to guess that someone in the org really likes him and talked them into taking a chance on him. It's very weird otherwise. Makes for exceedingly odd roster construction to have 2 long men in the bullpen, and seemingly makes it seem likely that either Keuchel or Lopez is in the rotation to start the year (add any additional pitcher, even after replacing Kimbrel, and you have 3 long guys in the bullpen, none of whom can be optioned, only 1 of whom has relief experience? That's ugly). Other than that, I'll assume someone really likes this guy, and make some joke about how if he's DFAd by May the guy who liked him will be promoted as punishment.- Sox Sign Vince Velasquez
Spotrac doesn't have this one in there yet, but they show $18.7 million remaining under the tax, and that's an estimate since they're making assumptions about the number of guys they need to move through the roster to deal with IL situations. They took on $7.5 million in salary at the 2021 trade deadline for reference.- 2022-23 NFL Season thread
