  1. First of all, this thread belongs in the Diamond club. Second of all...this strikes me as totally unusual for a winning team that just opened up a new ballpark.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:25 PM) Sure, more money would actually stay in the country. IIRC Mexico's second biggest money maker behind petroleum is people sending dollars back to Mexico from the US. I think it was something like $20 billion a year. I'll bet that could generate a few jobs here too. So you're in favor of import tariffs against Mexico to keep other jobs on our side of the border too?
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:22 PM) Once again the Twins will be good enough to win the AL Central and do nothing in the playoffs. I don't see them near the level of NYY or TB at all. If Liriano keeps this up they can hang with any of them.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:22 PM) No we wouldn't, because we wouldn't have the extra 15 million or so people here. Because it's easy to pretend that'll go away.
  5. We have today been presented with an explanation about why so few Republicans are willing to work on anything productive. When you understand issues, you wind up supporting those Democrats! Sounds about right to me.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) How many unemployed people do you know who are willing to work seasonal jobs for low wages? Clearly a lot. Haven't you seen the migration to the Imperial Valley from the rest of California?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) Which do you think will cost more, a one time fine to an employer, or a lifetime of social services? Because when an illegal immigrant gets sick, no one has to pay.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) Especially with their annual September swoon. September October records for the Sox the last few years: 2009: 15-15 2008: 12-15 2007: 15-12 2006: 12-16 2005: 19-12 2004: 19-13
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) How the heck is it May 5th and we still have Kotsay and Vizquel on the roster? I'd rather have some young guys up then have these guys around. It rarely is a good thing to call up guys to have them sit on the bench behind regulars.
  10. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) It might also make sense for the U.S. to give incentives to American companies to relocate some of their foreign industrial jobs to south of the border. Somehow, I don't think that would go over too well politically.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2010 -> 03:13 PM) so far a split with a terrible KC team. Really?
  12. QUOTE (flavum @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:57 PM) A couple examples of teams overcoming a deficit doesn't mean much now. What's happening now, pretty much means the Twins are a good team and the Sox are a bad team. Like I said, they need to get red hot right now. I'll grant you that, they definitely need to turn it around. Just not hopeless yet.
  13. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:48 PM) where is a Carlos Martinez when you need him? That one's obscure enough that i had to check his B-R page and it still doesn't stretch my memory.
  14. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:30 PM) I wouldn't mind doing it for $5 or $6, but I can't see justifying $8, knowing that a precipitous decline is potentially ahead of us at some point, possibly as soon as 6 months from now. I guess Dye probably got me jumpy. Let's come to a happy medium of $7? Unless we think Viciedo is ready (he's not currently, who knows by Sept.) we're going to need to put someone in 1b next year. There are some names who are FA...Pena, Berkman, who would be good fits as well, maybe even give more offense, but they're also likely to cost more than that and could perhaps also demand longer contracts.
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) Twins on top 5-2 in the 4th. They will be 10 games over .500 with a win. But Gordon Beckham think it's a good thing the Sox are only 6 games out...now 7, and probably 7.5. This season will be over in a couple weeks, unless the Sox get red hot right now. On May 20th, 2005, the Indians were a season low 6 games under .500, 17-23, and 12 games back. On May 27th 2005, the Astros were 16-31, 15 games under and 15 games out.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:21 PM) With them being forced to cover people in health care, they won't want to risk their policy costs by hiring high risk people, such as people with diseases, or women who have this nasty habit of getting pregnant. So, your argument then is that since this circumstance already exists, the only logical solution is to fully federalize health care. I'm game. We can do the same thing with immigration enforcement too!
  17. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:06 PM) It would seem to me that picking up a serviceable FA 1b for $5-$8 million would be an easy to do, but admittedly, I haven't even looked at who is available yet. I think that's likely to be the range we could extend Konerko for if we were willing to do it before the FA period started. 2/$16.
  18. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 02:01 PM) How many of the 18 names ahead of Konerko are making $12 million a year? http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/yea.../OPS/order/true I know all aren't available but that list would seem to indicate .840 OPS first basemen are sort of a dime a dozen, no? When I look at that list, I'm actually struck by how many of the people above Konerko are making $10 million+ a year, and how the ones who aren't haven't hit FA yet.
  19. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 5, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) But seriously, why on earth would we keep Paul Konerko after this season? His likely performance is fairly easy to approximate for a lot cheaper going forward. From who?
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2010 -> 01:54 PM) When Bako flew out to LF to end the game, it was the most relieving moment of my life. Really?
  21. I bet the Cubs would do that. The Red Sox too. To get out from under those contracts.
  22. -Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) Die Hard 5 in the works. NO, IT IS NOT.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) Ha, ha. Vegans are earbiters. The sweetest of all meats...
  25. QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 5, 2010 -> 10:34 AM) however, the crime of ID theft needs to be of major consequence. Oops, now you've made Bank of America mad. You're in trouble now.
