Dave Kaplan reports Kenny Williams holding back Rick Hahn
Balta1701 replied to Donaldo's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 16, 2016 -> 02:44 PM) Drafting, player development has gotten better under Hahn. In terms of actually having a plan, he can't execute his plan because KW and JR don't sign off on it. Worth stopping to think about - while the White Sox drafting looks slightly better over the last 5 years than the previous 5 years, the team has also been having higher draft picks and they've been saved from themselves by the new CBA that prevented them from giving the high ones up. Both of those would make their drafting look better with no changes. And in terms of development getting better - if that's the case, it has yet to make any noticeable impact on the big league team. -
Bernstein: Sources say White Sox might be for sale

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 16, 2016 -> 11:57 AM) Why haven't the Rays or A's moved? People need to get off the notion the White Sox would move. It isn't going to happen. The Rays are locked in to their stadium lease. -
Miguel Cabrera got hit on the arm by a baserunner while trying to reach for a ball, was wincing during his next at bat, pulled out. Arm injury.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 03:11 PM) Okay I might be misrepresenting something wrong but from my understanding but this is what I thought happened. -DWS and the DNC fed CNN anti-Bernie, pro-Hillary talking points. They're supposed to be a neutral entity but they attacked Bernie and focused on his negatives and supported Hillary and avoided all her faults. The DNC Leak happened and she had to step down to shame the party from further embarrassment. IE, they manipulated a willing media network to shut down the outsider opponent and prop up the establishment candidate. DWS was both trying to create a favorable debate schedule for hillary (unknown challengers always want more debates) and there were lower level discussions of how to assist her. Pretty much everyone could see that she was doing that with the debate schedule as of last fall, which is why Sanders supporters have had it out for her for forever, deservedly so. That plus no one really seems to have liked her anyway. There were further, down the line discussions of things that could be done, including things that would have crossed lines in morality like attacking Sanders for not being a good enough Jew. Those people should clearly have resigned. That behavior was clearly inappropriate on the part of the DNC. Furthermore, DWS should have resigned just for failing to keep their computer systems secure, as should a bunch of their tech people. But the other side worth pointing out is - outside of the debate schedule, which they wound up fixing after appropriate pressure was applied, no one seems to have alleged that the DNC really did anything as a solid effort to stop Sanders. There weren't DNC officials on CNN or anything like that asking about his religion - Hell it barely came up. Stealing a point from here as well as several other writers - there were clearly inappropriate discussions on the part of DNC officials, but I haven't seen evidence that they did anything other than discuss those things. That's the part I'm specifically asking you to support. You've claimed CNN specifically ran DNC pro-Hillary, Anti-Sanders press releases. That's something I haven't seen at all. Furthermore, the claim that CNN was somehow particularly pro-Hillary isn't one I've seen supported in data - I can only cite the "full network" survey from the spring but she had the most negative overall coverage. The DNC was discussing things it shouldn't have been, but that had zero influence on this race.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) Do I have to link to one of the biggest stories of the year? Considering you are on this board almost solely for politics (never see you on the baseball side), I wouldn't think you'd need a link on it... You're the only person I've seen, even including the poster here who believes all media are out to destroy his candidate, state that DWS fell because she was trying to manipulate CNN specifically.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 06:25 PM) Is the new Star Trek show coming to CBS cable channel. It's always mentioned with CBS All Access, is that their streaming app? The first episode will be broadcast then they're going to put it through their streaming channel as an exclusive, at least for now.

Ventura says he'd return next year if asked

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 07:29 AM) Dave Martinez name has come up for years and he always gets passed over. Tampa Bay even passed over him. There must be some negatives involved. Tom Thibodeau's name came up in the NBA for >5 years before the Bulls finally hired him (hell the bulls even contracted a case of VDN when he was available) and he was a strong coach...with some negatives. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 15, 2016 -> 01:38 PM) Boston doesn't really have any holes besides their starting rotation and bullpen though. So only 12 players out of their 25 man roster?

QUOTE (spiderman @ Aug 14, 2016 -> 05:39 PM) If the only available candidates, should Ventura not be back, are ex-White Sox players, does replacing him matter? Frankly...it can't hurt. -

I won't believe he's actually gone until there's actually another manager under contract. -
QUOTE (CregerMax @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 07:54 PM) Why can't they DFA Shields? Nobody will touch that contract, then send him to the minors and maybe he walks away from the game. If he doesn't walk away at least he gets to work on getting better in the minors. Because in order to DFA him they would be on the hook immediately for the remaining $25 million on that deal. Shields could sign with someone else on a spring training invite next year to see if he has anything left and if he has anything left that team would get him for nothing while the White Sox paid him $27 million for these 3 months.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 07:22 PM) Prove it I immediately checked Jamie Navarro and found he had a 3.2 fWAR season his first year with the Sox before his advanced stats collapsed and Shields has been worth -0.7 fWAR with the White Sox so far this year while Navarro's worst 2 seasons were -0.6, so Shields is already worse than the acquisition I thought of. Who else should I check?

Oh, 4-1 lead, I think I'll go get a glass of wine and use the bathroom. (Shields happens). (Looks at gameday again, laughs).

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 06:15 PM) C'mon, Robin. Sacrifice bunting in the 1st inning? No! Did what it was supposed to do. Got your team 1 run and avoided the big inning.

I had a feeling that I'd come back and find a thread where people were somehow amazed at the number of injuries during a year where the team really wasn't all that beaten up. We had a couple unusually lucky years in a row, with almost record-breaking health, so a year that's not extreme, but even still fairly healthy, looks "snakebit". 2016 for the White Sox is about average so far on total days on the DL, below average in WAR lost to the DL. White Sox have had just over 500 man-days on the DL this year, the Dodgers have had over 1300, and some of those were this Kershaw dude.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 05:22 PM) Pirates have Glasnow, Bell and Meadows all knocking on the door. The question is how they fit them into the lineup together. Still would be shocked to see McCutcheon traded going into next year...if they were rebuilding, sure, itvwould a CarGo situation or Tulo 100%. His leadership is still very important for that organization, and they're betting one final bounceback year. Jesus Christ, the discussion was about a center fielder and you just named a pitcher and a 1b. "OMG how will we find a spot for Glasnow with Cutch in CF? Uh, how about Glasnow pitches and Cutch plays CF? NO!!!!" Meadows is the interesting one. He just made AAA and the Pirates aren't like the White Sox where AAA arrival means they're 2 weeks from the big leagues. Meadows has had some injuries this year so he's not going to have a full year and he still seems to have some work to do at AAA. They could very well think about giving him a slot next April, but only if they have good reason to do so. They won't be desperate to move any of those OFs unless you pay a Sale-like price for them. They're all under control for years at reasonable costs. If Meadows wound up blocked, then they could darn well move one of the current OFs next year at the deadline if they were to fall out of the race or, perhaps, Meadows is a trade headliner next year.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 05:23 PM) But we can leverage our relievers when they get close to arbitration for the likes of Nestor Molina and Matt Davidson...Nate Jones would have been a good opportunity had he reeled off saves in August and September after getting rid of Robertson. Alas, not to be. At the very least, they would have seen how Nate would respond to being the closer. Sox, when they start the year with unprovens in guys like Santiago and Thornton who are forced into the role out of necessity, it usually doesn't end well for them. You dropped too few names here. The Sox have had a number of unprovens succeed in the closer role. Jenks was called up from AA and closed a world series 3 months later. Reed was called up and 2/3 of the games he pitched in during his rookie year were games he finished. Santos, of course, came almost out of no where to be a closer. Santiago closing was Robin making terrible choices, Thornton closing made sense but he turned out to just not have the mental makeup for it. The ChiSox have created their own out of an unproven guy several times. I would have no issue looking at Burdi as a closer long-term, but if that's the case then calling him up this year or even before April 25 next year is just financially stupid. It would be as responsible as taking $15 million and lighting it on fire.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) As wage growth accelerates, we have this chart https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS17200000 Will Yellen allow economy to run hot to make up some of that dip? It seems pretty clear the answer will be no.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 05:12 PM) Cubs offensive players seem like good guys but the main pitchers outside of Hendricks and Lester are unlikable (Arrieta, Lackey, Chapman, Strop, Hammel) You'd love Arrieta if he was one of our guys. No one will ever be more like that than Noah of course, but he's in that mold. Chapman...yeah that's a different story.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 11, 2016 -> 10:19 PM) For one year of McCutheon who is having a bad year? 2 first round draft choices is not a "salary dump" The Pirates might darn well think about moving him this offseason since they have another OF coming up soon, but even off an unprecedented down year they won't move him for less than that. You want Cutch you're paying MVP level prices, at least this offseason.

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Aug 12, 2016 -> 03:31 PM) Major league level playing time and experience that a player could never get in the minors, an opportunity for management to assess how a player performs at this level, how he reacts to pressure, how he fits into a team's chemistry, how a player reacts and responds to failure. Last but not least for the White Sox is the appeal for fans at this point in the season. Fans would rather see young players out there trying to earn a job rather than guys like Robertson who are about to lose theirs. None of that is worth the price of a season of team control when he's in his prime.
