  1. The Sox are good, but not good enough to be trading someone like Madrigal already. That would be a major mistiming and miscalculation of where they are in this process. Sometimes trades like this are not “aggressive” they’re just stupid.
  2. And I agree too, it would be silly to completely negate that. The difference here is that hitters do typically tail off at a certain age, so this may not be a slow start ala a 28y old. Not saying he won’t bounce back, but eventually Father Time does emerge.
  3. You can’t eat last year’s production. Eventually he will either return to form, or the Sox will have to decide when to give other guys a shot.
  4. Can you imagine being Yermin? Work your whole life to a be a pro player and absolute mash the ball only to sit behind a 38y old hitting .150 who can’t run to first base.
  5. Did Yermin not put up very similar numbers to Robert in MILB last year? I know it’s not apples to apples, but c’mon. Classic case of a GM overthinking something with a vet over a prospect that doesn’t fit the historical mold.
  6. Ahhhh. Got it. So they allow you to do this loophole.
  7. what’s the reason we couldn’t have picked high upside guys in rounds 3-5 and offered them what we had left? If they turned it down no big loss over the guys we already picked.
  8. I was excited too, unfortunately I was informed by other Soxtalk members that Yermin is unlikely to amount to anything. Supposedly, because previous 25yr old+ AAA players in the Sox organization that have put up .850+ OPS have failed, that Yermin is doomed and we shouldn’t get so excited. That being said, I’m hoping those in the organization have more sense than this shallow thinking:)
  9. Again, you selectively picking players with similar statistics is not a “comparison”. It literally has no predictive ability or signal, thus is useless. The success or failure of those players (and others with very different stats) play no role in the future for Mercedes. You may personally believe it, but it doesn’t make it true. We can all data mine to find things to fit our narrative.
  10. Wanting to see someone get a shot in the majors doesn’t mean we’re getting ahead of ourselves. And cherry picking players with a 800+ OPS literally has nothing to do with whether or not Mercedes will be successful or not. Nobody, and I repeat nobody, is saying that he definitely WILL BE successful because of minor league numbers. Only that they think he deserves a chance. It may be you who doesn’t understand the context by evidence of the straw man you built above.
  11. Imagine wanting to see a guy play who puts up incredible numbers over guys who do not (Collins). I know we’re going SO overboard.
  12. I’m ok if everyone is pedantic over my word choice, but I think most of you understood my original point. There’s risk with all long term contracts, it’s just something that I think is a risk.
  13. I’m not concerned about Robert. I’m concerned about Moncada based on previous injury history at ages when you should be the healthiest of your career.
  14. For a young player he’s had a non trivial amount of injuries. How will his body respond in 5-6y? Not everyone can eat 2 dominos pizzas per night and wake up looking like Luis Robert
  15. Even odds that Yermin would outhit Edwin this season
  16. Good for Timmy. Plays the game the right way, plays the game hard, is honest, came from humble beginnings. How can anyone not like him? Hope he hits a few line drives right at Verlander’s knee caps.
  17. I think all anyone is saying is that he should get a chance otherwise risk him turning into a really good DH
  18. It’s unreal to see people come up with long winded stories on why guys stink who are crushing it on the actual field. Sometimes things should be about common sense. Let’s see if he gets a shot and what happens long term.
  19. Seems like a bad decision to not give him a shot last year. What if he ends up being a great big league hitter and we didn’t even give him a chance despite amazing MILB numbers? would look really foolish.
  20. There’s only upside having someone named Gorkys on your team.
  21. This isn’t even comparable to the Patriots. Not necessarily because of the cheating but because of public perception. Houston has been villainized in a way that NE never was. These guys are forever tarnished. They had their opportunity to fess up and put on a good show apologizing and they failed. Now everyone wants blood and will never forgive or forget.
  22. This whole scandal has delegitimized the World Series title they won. It doesn’t matter if it’s ever take away, the public backlash and perception is as bad or worse.
