  1. In defense of Karl, I'm sure there were A LOT of players in the NBA who felt the exact same way he did about the Magic Johnson situation, but were afraid to speak up about it. When Magic announced he had the AIDS virus, the public perception was that he was giving his own eulogy. The general population of this country knew very little about HIV/AIDS at that time, and that includes the NBA. Thankfully now we all know better. And Magic and Karl "made up" like 10 years ago, so get off of it. It's a dead issue.
  2. Heh, hype? When you have the best 2 players in the NBA and win 3 titles in a row, that's not hype -- that's legit.
  3. I think IG used to say "wowzers". If I'm not mistaken, "yousers" is a word from the 60's or 70's.
  4. http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2003/0714/1580339.html Monday, July 14 Former Cowboy sued over auto repair bill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders is battling an automotive shop over what he says Jesus told him to pay for a repair bill. The owner of the repair shop says Sanders wanted to pay only $1,500 of the $4,265.57 bill, saying that Jesus had informed him that was all he needed to pay. "It's the 'Praise Jesus' discount,'' attorney Ed Edson told The Dallas Morning News in Monday's editions. Edson said he has been trying to collect the bill from Sanders since 2001 on behalf of Phil Compton, the owner of the car repair business. Through court filings, the player says the accusations are untrue. Sanders' attorney, Edmund Gomez, did not return a telephone call early Monday from The Associated Press. The lawsuit was scheduled to go to trial later Monday before state District Judge Joe Cox in Dallas County civil court. Anthony Montoya, a representative for Sanders, had contacted Compton and told him a 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible needed to be towed to his shop for repairs. The car had been repaired before by Compton. Papers filed in his lawsuit stated that he and his mechanics installed a new radiator and thermostat, flushed the engine, repaired the car's electrical system and gauges, replaced the starter motor, removed contaminated fuel and rebuilt the carburetor. Mechanics for Magrathea Inc., Compton's company, had replaced gaskets and hoses. Sanders had approved and Montoya had approved all the repairs, according to the lawsuit. But when the car was returned to the CBS sportscaster's home in Plano on Nov. 5, 2001, Compton said Pilar Sanders, the former Cowboy's wife, "answered the door, took the keys and invoices, started the car to make sure it was working and went back into the locked house, refusing to return the keys or invoices.'' Sanders' bodyguards and housekeepers then moved their cars in front of and behind the Lincoln so that it couldn't be towed back to the garage, the lawsuit stated. When Sanders drove up, he refused to pay the invoice amount, handing Compton a $1,500 check and saying, "Praise Jesus ... I follow what in my heart I'm told to pay.'' People like this should be locked up. Even if Deion didn't say that, you KNOW there are people out there who have done this (or something similar) before.
  5. , that was mistake 1, 2, and 3.
  6. About the only thing they're doing right at the AS game. Congrats Esteban, you sure as hell deserve it! (mugs full of OJ and Stoli, not piss water, otherwise known as beer)
  7. It's never really had MEANING, but it was always fun to watch. I don't want to see Jim Edmonds, Bret Boone, and certainly not Garret Anderson in a homerun hitting contest. These aren't power hitters -- sure, they have a lot of HR's this season, but I'd MUCH rather see guys like Sammy and Bonds in the derby. These are guys that have 500+ career HR, and are among the most elite of all-time. Hell, I'd rather see Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco -- 2 guys that I really dislike -- come out of retirement for 1 night and see them rather than the 3 guys I mentioned. Delgado, Giambi, and Sheffield are the only 3 that are remotely interesting to me, and that's not enough to get me to watch it. Even the HR derby has been reduced to a meaningless exhibition.
  8. As can I, but I get irked when I hear someone immediately ask "how fast does he throw?". Kind of like when someone asks "how many HR's does he have?" about a hitter. But, you're right about speed giving a pitcher more margin for error and allowing them to buy time while learning how to pitch.
  9. The throwback uni is obvious...but why don't they have throwback hats to go with them? Looks kinda silly, heh. They did have throw back hats. It is a printed S-O-X in white, surrounded by red print. It is the 1953 design. That pic doesn't show it very well, but trust me I watched the game and saw the hats. Uh, unless I'm blind, that hat that Damaso is wearing is black and it has the current Sox logo. Maybe that picture isn't from yesterday's game? It is block letters instead of the script that is on the hat we use now, plus if you look really closely you can see the red tint around the letters. It is just a bad angle to see. Hmmm...OK. Not much different I guess. Oh well.

  11. Why is everyone so hung up on how fast a pitcher throws? That's gotta be the most overrated thing in baseball. John Rocker throws almost 100, and where is he? MB is lucky to hit 91/92, and he's one of the brightest lefties in the game. Look at Jamie Moyer, Greg Maddux, etc. It's not about speed of the pitch -- it's about location and poise.

  13. 75? No. 85? Maybe. Everyone is waiting for the Royals to crash and burn, just like everyone was expecting the Sox to do in 2000. It didn't happen in 2000, and it's not going to happen in '03. If the Sox want to be AL Central champs, they are going to have to win it -- not expect and wait for KC to lose it.
  14. Maybe so, but the players that are on the field are the ones that win or lose games. Management can put together 25 bums, but if they are motivated and try hard, anything can happen. And as a fan, I'd rather see a team of bums that gave it 100% than a team of potential all-stars that seem to not care half the time.
  15. We went 6-7. I suppose that's not all that horrible, but considering who our "competition" was, it's a lot worse than it seems. That sweep against the Twins really saved us, as it's kept us within striking distance after the break, but it's going to take a major hot streak for us to catch the Royals. The biggest plus for the Sox is that our starting pitching, save Danny Wright, has really been impressive so far this year. Well, now that I look at the stats, it hasn't been that great, but I think that with Garland you can attribute his 4.64 ERA to a really bad game here and there, and with Buehrle you can blame his horrible start. But as of late, it just seems that we are getting perfomances that are giving us a chance to win the ballgame, and that's all you can ask of your starters. I would not be opposed to the Sox moving Porzio into the rotation and getting Danny into the bullpen, and sending Glover down to the minors to work on his s***. And then, hopefully Danny could turn into Eric Gagne and all would be well in Chi-town. Porzio gave up 3 ER in 5 1/3 IP in his start Saturday, but he looked a lot more impressive than Danny has, that's for sure. The success of the Sox is going to depend on the success of the offense. We've seen that if this team can put up some runs, we win. I hope they use the AS break to do some soul searching and come out on Thursday and kick some ass. If not, July 31 is rapidly approaching and we could see White Flag Part Deux.
  16. Ever hear of changing the channel? Or just not watching altogether?
  17. Sounds a tad like us in 2000 and the Royals this year. Indians/Tigers AL Central champs in '04?
  18. I'm sorry, but I don't buy this argument. I have played for many years and have never had a manager who I played any harder for than any other manager. I've never dogged it because the manager didn't motivate me. If you are competitive, if you have the drive and desire, you show up to play everyday. You play to win. This team is a group of duds. In any given 4-2 game, if we have 2 guys on base, the next batter is thinking about hitting a home run regardless of what JM or Greg Walker is preaching to them. Everyone on this team wants to be a hero with the long-ball. KC has baseball players, not a group of DH's playing positions. They play all facets of the game. Youve played professionally? Or are you just talking about rec leagues? Heh, does it matter? The guy's right, and that's all that matters to me. Players MUST be self-motivated to succeed in the majors, and it appears that the Sox' roster is full of players that are not.
  19. .274, not .265. And if Frank was in the Yankee lineup, he'd have just as many RBI as Giambi does. They gave Giambi the MVP in 2000 when Frank deserved it, and now they give him an AS spot. Sadness. And "apologists"? What are you talking about dude?
  20. Heh, btw, the Carl Everett "I felt like a woman" quote is probably the funniest thing I've heard an athlete say in years.
