  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 29, 2012 -> 10:58 AM) Since when do you measure production solely on homers? Hafner's OPS v. right-handers last year was .798. AJ's overall was .827. No way would Dunn in left be worse than the expected ~.625 OPS in ~650 plate appearances versus right-handers from Flowers and Viciedo. What's the best chance the Sox have to contend next year in your opinion? Travis Hafner played 66 games last year. Only once in the last 6 years has he played over 100 games, and only once in his career has he missed less than 20 games a season. Also keep in mind, it isnt like Cleveland was running him out at first every time he played. he was only DHed, so even doing something like swinging a bat 3-4 ABs per game shelved him almost 100 games last season. My "path to a championship" isnt clear at this point, but I do know that Hafner is a dead end that will lead the Sox into a direction in which bench players that shouldnt be playing every day are in the lineup every day, and that is not good.

  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) Money talks when you have MJ/Scottie, Kobe/Shaq, Kobe/Gasol on the roster. It doesn't sound as good with DWill/Johnson/Lopez This is true, but Phil doesnt have the luxury of swooping into a situation with a GOAT contender
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:43 PM) I know money always talks, but the dude is what, 67 now? A multi-year, $30 million deal may be a ton of money but it would require him coaching until he's 70 and maybe never even having a team that can make a conference finals run. I have to figure the roster should be a big deal here. The wildcard here is Prokhorovs crazy desire to win. And the roster isnt terrible, it is underperforming. Maybe not conference finals worthy, but Phil has worked wonders before
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) I can't see Phil going to a place where he has a roster that can't obviously win a title this year. Money always talks for PJax. If he gets a multiyear deal with a promise to add to the current roster(who knows how that can be done), it might bait him. He knows the Lakers arent calling anytime soon
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 06:17 PM) I haven't been to TOR since 2000, but we stayed at the SkyDome hotel (radison, I think), which was pretty cool if you got the view into the ballpark. There were lots of things to do in walking distance from there. Also Niagara Falls is something like an hour away, and is worth spending a day at as well. absolutely. Quite a thing to experience in person
  7. ESPN was saying the Nets are trying hard for PJax
  8. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 28, 2012 -> 12:29 AM) You can kill someone in football and it's OK if you can still tackle or score. Rae Carruth disagrees

  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 02:44 PM) I'm going to a bachelor party there in April. I'll be sure to pass along some great couples activites that I encounter up there. lap dances with strippers doesnt count as a great couples activity just because 2 of you technically make you a couple.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) (You should add the word "Toronto" to the thread header so that anyone who has been there might see the thread and jump in) (dont you have to do that now that the thread title has already been posted)
  13. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 11:48 AM) If Rick Hahn shoots from the hip because it's "making people insane", he should be fired. Arent we past shooting from the hip? at this point he has set up a tripod, calibrated his gun, cleaned his gun, recalibrated his gun, gently set it on the tripod, and took aim, slightly placed his finger on the trigger, and is repeating to himself "wait for it.....wait for it...."
  14. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 11:38 AM) I agree with you 100%! If that is true, then you need to RELAX
  15. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 11:20 AM) In general I'm with you. This team is built for 'win now'... has vets...and if the upcoming moves weren't going to also reflect that, we'd have seen some salary dumping instead of the Keppinger contract. We also have no farm system, so 'win now' is kind of the date we brought to the dance and are stuck with. In '05 we always forget that we went into that year with a first ballot HOF player on the roster. Only in retrospect do we see it as a year where spare parts were just whipped into place and they all magically worked. We owe so much to the crap-relievers-turned-wonders in Cotts and Politte. And the whole Jenks thing also. In general, teams that win the WS have "magical" things that happen. There is no guarantees that if you throw 200 million backs at a bunch of players that you will win it all, as the Yankees have consistently shown since 2000. They have competed, sure, but you know the expectations to win have not been met save for one season(twice if you count 2000 as well). It is such an inexact science anymore. Many teams position themselves to win by throwing money around like nobodies business, but others do so with shoestring budgets and smart player evaluation. I see the Sox as a team that could be a little bit of both, the budget is definitely high enough to be considered a mid to high spending team, and they seem to pluck players here and there that are forgotten by other organizations and plug them in where they succeed(De Aza, Thornton, even AJ back in 05). Hahn needs to start bellying up to the table though, at this point we dont know what direction this team is headed and what the intentions are. And it is driving many people insane
  16. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) 05 was a retool. retool, rebuild, reset. A different team took the field. And you know what, the Sox arent rebuilding now because one position ( C) where a young player took the position of a longtime veteran. There was a hell of a lot more turnover in 05 than there is now. Both corner outfelders, closer(s), set up, catcher, 4th and 5th starters, both middle infielders, and DH(split time with Carl and Frank). We arent seeing that this season and Lamar is freaking out about a rebuild

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 10:38 AM) It's strange that movies now have to be closer to 3 hours than 2 hours. They crank up the price of movie tickets, then cut less (usually unnecessary) film than they used to to give us more bang for our buck, but then they have fewer screenings. I'd rather, except for epic films such as DKR or whatever, they cut this s*** to 2 hours and give me more screening options. On Christmas night, the women of the family were supposed to go see "Les Miserables" while the guys hung out, but the only options were three showings between 6 and 6:30 or three showings between 10 and 11. Strange. A 7:30 or 8 would have been perfect for the group. I only go see movies in the theater that I want to get the full 3d/imax experience for. If I am going to be ripped off watching a movie, I might as well spend the extra three bucks and get the full experience. The last movie I saw was Paranorman with my Brother in law, neices, nephew, daughter, and neighbor and their 5 year old. Saw TDKR, Avengers and Spiderman in 3D and Imax as well. Everything else I just wait for it to hit On Demand
  18. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 10:21 AM) But who were the additions/acquisitions? Mostly veterans, correct? Rebuilding is not exclusive to rookies coming up.
  19. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 10:02 AM) I would like to see them use the $ to develop their farm system and/or get some international free agents. I'd be very cool with that. I want to clarify my positions...here's where I'm coming from: IMO, the "window" on the Sox contending is rapidly closing. The Tigers will be better, as will the Royals. Meanwhile, the tenures of Konerko and Dunn are coming towards their ends, Floyd will be a FA after 2013, and the minor league "cupboard" is bare. If the Sox are going into 2013 with thoughts of being SERIOUS contenders, moves have to be made, not necessarily today, but, prior to the season. I want to see the Sox win. I want another 2005. I'm sure Hahn/KW want this as well. Where I differ in opinion with them is that I don't think that you can "rebuild" and contend at the same time. Is that not what happened in 2005? That was quite a different team from 2004
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 27, 2012 -> 08:23 AM) I don't know the first thing about it, but I will placate you. What games do you have for it? What makes it cool? I only have Nintendoland at the moment, but I just love the different minigames and how the gamepad interacts with the games. It is also refreshing to have a console that has finally caught up to the others visually(if only for a little while until Xbox and Sony do their thing next year). There are some things that havent been activated just yet(Nintendo E Shop, Virtual Console, Nintendo Tvii), so I am waiting to see how those work. The gamepad is very responsive, I like the DS/Console feel to some of the games they have. The MiiVerse is expanded, you can text others and have conversations, people have artwork in their avatars which is pretty cool. I will have a better grasp on this system by the summer when we start seeing more original games and not ports.
  21. Ah luv mah WiiU
  22. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) Flowers never put up great numbers as a full time player in the minors, did he? Well, are you certain of this, or are you asking everyone else?
  23. I was trying to find a thread in SLAM that didnt contain the words "gun control". But then I posted this, and ruined it
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 12:00 PM) He's really not that much better defensively than Konerko either. but gold gloveness
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 26, 2012 -> 11:54 AM) *sigh* It's sad that you're right. I'm just hoping that with Al Davis finally gone, the franchise slowly starts becoming relevant again. Baby steps. So what you are hoping is that the apple fell off the tree, rolled down the hill, into the ocean, and floated away to sane ground
