QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) And around and around it goes, where it stops, nobody knows. Let's face it, most GM's probably view Quintana as closer to a 3 (possibly 4 type on a really deep playoff team like the Cards), and they're not going to give up someone like a Wacha or Shelby Miller for him. They might part with a Piscotty, Kelly or Carlos Martinez, but then we're losing a cost-controlled player whose upside is a 2 and who definitely will be a good return of investment with his current team-friendly contract even if he falls off to a 3/4 type. So the White Sox go ahead and make that trade...not for Lance Lynn, who we really would want the most, but for someone who could be a 2/3 starter, but just as likely could end up out of the rotation in a year. WHICH WOULD INEVITABLY LEAD TO....Piscotty, Kelly, Carlos Martinez, Beck, #3 pick aren't ready yet and need two years, therefore we need to trade Chris Sale now. Correct, my bad for continuing

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) I feel like people forget that most teams are trying to win the World Series, not collect top prospects. Every GM with a contending team is always going to make KW moves, and that's a very very good thing to do. I don't even know if that's arguable? I'm not arguing that players won't be dealt. What I am arguing is that Marty's scenario makes little sense for both teams if what he is asking for were to happen. He wants a top of the rotation starter major league ready prospect which he plans on plugging in the rotation pretty much immediately, and plans on acquiring said starter with Quintana merely because he has a good deal and is the finished product. Doesn't make sense, teams don't ditch Michael Wacha just because they want Quintanas deal. And the Sox shouldn't be looking elsewhere with Quintanas deal just because it is a good deal. They should plan on benefiting from that deal.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) Because the team trading for Quintana sacrifices some upside for a finished product. "Some upside" does not meet your qualifications of "top of the line starter". And if the Sox already have the finished product at a reasonable price, doesn't really make sense for them to trade away for a guy with "some upside" So again, it makes sense for neither team

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) The O's and Jays may not have time to wait on developing a #2 starter, have to win while Yankees are down. Again, if they have this possible 1-2 starter in the minors, which you are putting in the Sox rotation as early as next year, why would that team want to deal that starter for only 4 years of Quintana, instead of building around him. It is simply shortsighted and terrible management of assets. The Os and Blue Jays aren't gonna jump past the Yankees with a move like that.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) You want more of a guarantee? Pay Scherzer. A GM contending for a payoff spot might be willing to give of a prospect with top-of-the-rotation stuff for Quintana. Teams like Baltimore, Toonto, Arizona, or Atlanta to name four. Right, because keeping that top of the rotation stuff in house, cheaply, makes no sense to a contending GM.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 12:55 PM) That's not my number one pick though. That's a good need first round pick for someone but as an overall number one? I want the guy who commands double teams, not the guy who benefits. I think Clowney will demand double teams as well, making that line devastating. But again, glad it isn't my decision to make. I am a fan of Clowney

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) May have two. Your scenario does nothing to guarantee another top of the rotation starter, and counts on another GM being dumb enough to trade a "potential" top of the rotation starter for Quintana. Again, it makes absolutely zero sense. Why would any other GM make this trade?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) Is he really the value you want at a #1? A guy with motivation issues who can be a one trick pony? I'm glad it isn't my decision to make, but if You line him up opposite of a guy who commands double teams, you have to think he will succeed

- Tigers extend Cabrera 10 years, $300 million
@jaysonst: Dave Dombrowski says Cabrera's vesting options become guaranteed if he finishes in top 10 of MVP voting the previous year. No other triggers- 2014-2015 NFL Football thread
Interesting that the Texans don't want to add Clowney to their already elite defense and then groom a QB- Tigers extend Cabrera 10 years, $300 million
If the Sox ended up getting Cabrera instead of the Tigers, would Jerry be throwing money at Cabrera like Illitch? It makes you wonder- Would you trade for Rasmus THIS season...
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 08:40 AM) Because of his relatively young age, being lefthanded, being able to play CF (unlike Choo) and the fact that there are just so few appealing OF options on the market, Rasmus is going to easily get $100-125 million if he has another 850ish OPS year. It would be even more shocking at this point to see Thompson put it all together, but stranger things have happened. With all the disappointment surrounding our minor league outfielders the last couple of seasons, sooner or later one of them almost has to break through by the law of averages. Choo played 150 games in center last season- Max Scherzer
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) He said SIGNED. Not traded for/or extended once already on the team...because then you have Contreras, Danks, Floyd, Javy, Garland, etc. The only two that qualify in the last 20-25 years are Navarro and David Wells. David Wells WAS traded for, not signed. I am amazed that you are somehow forgetting the Toronto trade debacle with Mike Sirotka, but I guess even Caulfield can have a bad memory day And to be honest I thought you were responding to the second part of his statement where he said "I can think of a few instances when one was traded for" And that is why I responded with Garcia- Max Scherzer
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 09:48 AM) David Wells, 2001 Terrible example. Freddy Garcia should be first and foremost- Sports Media Discussion

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) Ummm yes I have. I also saw him almost sign a starting pitcher for a TON of $$. It's obvious he wants a right handed ACE. Every time Hahn talks about the pursuit of Tanaka he mentions how his age played into it. Scherzer is older and you just can't count on power pitchers like him staying healthy. It just doesn't make sense for the White Sox- Max Scherzer
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 08:52 PM) I get what your saying, BUT- teams are putting a great premium on draft picks these days- this may shy some of the buyers away from going after him. Will this lower his asking price? Maybe... The guy just rejected 144M from the tigers. I think he(and Boras) set his bar- Max Scherzer

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 04:01 PM) I'd like to make a dark and serious smurfs movie. Would be just about as likely to work. The mirage comic is very dark compared to the cartoon.
