March 27, 201412 yr Holy macaroni. Two-time American League MVP Miguel Cabrera has agreed to terms with the Detroit Tigers on a new 10-year contract that will pay him just under $300 million, a baseball source told ESPN.com. The new contract, which covers the two years remaining on Cabrera's current deal and eight additional years, is expected to become official later this week, the source said. CBSSports.com earlier reported Detroit and Cabrera were closing in on an agreement that would make the superstar slugger a Tiger for life.
March 27, 201412 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 05:46 PM) Holy macaroni. This contract will be very awful very quickly.
March 27, 201412 yr Pretty dumb move. I fully expect Miggy to start declining in the next 3 years or start suffering from nagging injuries.
March 28, 201412 yr QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) This contract will be very awful very quickly. Then they'll just trade him to Texas.
March 28, 201412 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 05:46 PM) Holy macaroni. As a White Sox fan all I have to say is... HELL YES!!!!
March 28, 201412 yr Too bad they're no longer stuck with Fielder's deal as well...wish they would have been able to come to an agreement with Scherzer. Those two deals, in addition to Verlander and Cabrera, could have really doomed the franchise five years from now. They're also going to have to pay Austin Jackson at some point. It's probably one of the reasons they sacrificed Fister, who was their most underrated starter IMO.
March 28, 201412 yr Who's going to be the first billion dollar player? Half a billion? You'd have to think NFL football players would be looking at these huge contracts and wondering why they're not similarly compensated, guaranteed contracts, NFL even more profitable, much longer average careers (where a good RB is lucky to last 3-4 seasons with the increase in speed/violent contact/strength and conditioning)...and baseball players don't OFTEN face being crippled or traumatized by concussions and mental health issues after age 50. March 28, 201412 yr Here's a funny and very sarcastic article from bless you boys. Funny read. http://www.blessyouboys.com/2014/3/27/5555...for-292-million
March 28, 201412 yr QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 28, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) Verlander and Cabrera will cost them 60 million per year. For two players. Wow. I mean who wouldn't want to pay a 35 year old Miguel Cabrera and a 35 year old Justin Verlander a combined 60 million in 2018? That is just good business.

March 28, 201412 yr To understand just how terrible the industry reviews are of the Detroit Tigers' deal with Miguel Cabrera, it's appropriate to draw on the examples from the movie industry. The Cabrera deal, in the eyes of rival executives, is "Disaster Movie" bad. The Cabrera deal, in the eyes of officials with other teams, is "Battlefield Earth" bad. It's is "Heaven's Gate" bad. It is "Sahara" bad. (I think he means ISHTAR??) Folks from around the sport believe that Cabrera's deal is a guaranteed loser, and they do not understand what the Tigers could be thinking to sign on for this money pit that they know will have ripple effects on the entire industry. "I just don't get it," one high-ranking NL executive said. "They lost their minds." Said another: "It's an awful deal for the Tigers, and it's worse for baseball." The criticism of the contract should not be confused with criticism of Cabrera, whose skills as a hitter are universally respected. Buster Olney, ESPN blogs
March 28, 201412 yr If the Sox ended up getting Cabrera instead of the Tigers, would Jerry be throwing money at Cabrera like Illitch? It makes you wonder
