  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 12:44 PM) For local effect... they are now predicting that around Wednesday, there will be 20 to 30 foot waves in southern Lake Michigan, as the storm remnants cross the eastern Great Lakes and shove the water west. Could be significant lakefront flooding in Chicagoland. Also, seperately... anyone read about the HMS Bounty? Replica ship now mostly for tourists, lost power, foundered and sank off North Carolina. 14 people had to be rescued, and 2 are missing. WTF were they even DOING out there in this? Winning a Darwin Award?
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 12:12 PM) LOL Your "specifics of a rule" are referring to a black-and-white rule. What's to win? He was OUT OF BOUNDS. And to the rest of the world, I can still see the brilliant JCM24's posts. Unfortunately, even if you ignore someone, you still see their posts when others quote them. It's been fun to read the absolute nonsense.
  3. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) So with the Illinois football team being abysmal, and the way Groce has impressed everyone in recruiting and with interviews thus far, I simply am pumped for this season. I know we'll struggle at times as we need a true PG for Groce's system, but I think this team is going to grow throughout the year and hopefully make the tourney. Yup, can't wait to watch some games. I know we won't be great - but we do have some talent, so we shouldn't be terrible. Combine that with good coaching this year (even if he can't play his true style), and I think this team will be fun to watch. Should have a good compete level. Win or lose, that's a easier to take. I'm looking for the "we look competent, win or lose" team that we aren't getting out of football. It's possible we could make the tournament, but it's not exactly a great year to be in the BT. Going to be tough to pull some upsets. Maybe BP and DJ decide they want to make the tournament, and come up with some big games to sneak in. One way or another we're probably on the bubble in March. Groce has me excited. It's going to take time for him to hopefully turn it all around, but I'm looking forward to it.
  4. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 08:42 PM) Tennessee and Georgia Tech had a "secret" scrimmage today where media wasn't allowed and no one is allowed to talk about it, report a score, etc. But, more than one source has said Tennessee dominated (without arguably our best player). Getting me excited for basketball season. Fight Club, basketball style.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) It isn't true http://www.snopes.com/crime/justice/mugger.asp Stupid internet. Still funny, as I could imagine part of that going down when a mugger confronts the wrong guy.
  6. AN ACTUAL CRAIG'S LIST PERSONALS AD To the Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in downtown Savannah night before last. Date: 2010-09-27, 1:43 a.m. E.S.T. I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over, shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message. First, I'd like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn't expect you to actually crap in your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket.. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason.. My girlfriend was happy that I just returned safely from my 2nd tour as a Combat Marine in Afghanistan .. She had just bought me that Kimber Custom Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head ... Isn't it?! I know it probably wasn't fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with crap in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. [That prevented you from calling or running to your buddies to come help mug us again]. After I called your mother or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, I explained the entire episode of what you'd done. Then I went and filled up my gas tank as well as those of four other people in the gas station, -- on your credit card. The guy with the big motor home took 153 gallons and was extremely grateful! I gave your shoes to a homeless guy outside Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all the cash in your wallet. [That made his day!] I then threw your wallet into the big pink "pimp mobile" that was parked at the curb ..... After I broke the windshield and side window and keyed the entire driver's side of the car. Earlier, I managed to get in two threatening phone calls to the DA's office and one to the FBI, while mentioning President Obama as my possible target. The FBI guy seemed really intense and we had a nice long chat (I guess while he traced your number etc.). In a way, perhaps I should apologize for not killing you ... But I feel this type of retribution is a far more appropriate punishment for your threatened crime. I wish you well as you try to sort through some of these rather immediate pressing issues, and can only hope that you have the opportunity to reflect upon, and perhaps reconsider, the career path you've chosen to pursue in life.. Remember, next time you might not be so lucky. Have a good day! Thoughtfully yours, Semper Fi, Alex
  7. Great people of Soxtalk, If you could take 5 seconds to "like" this photo, that would be much appreciated. Costume contest for our dog through the vet, and they hand out prizes for the most likes. Thanks https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=101...e=3&theater
  8. Wow, human instinct to put a hand down to break the fall costs him the TD and the win. Maybe one of the weirdest replays ever.
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 06:31 PM) I hear you there, we should be better, but it just hasn't happened It would be nice to find our Barry Alvarez, but Beckman definitely isn't him. We may never get to what I just outlined in our lifetimes (f*** us all if that's the case), but there's no good reason we shouldn't have those as expectations, at minimum, and hold them to that standard. I really don't think it's asking for that much.
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 05:39 PM) You are right, I do. it's Illinois football, why should my expectations be any higher? Because we're a BT school with money, facilities, a large fan base, etc. I'm not setting the bar high, but there's no good reason we shouldn't be a middle of the road big ten team. Sometimes worse, once in a blue moon stars align and we have a shot at a championship. You could have made that post 20 years ago on a Wisconsin message board, too.
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 11:21 AM) I could never figure out why we didn't just keep Zook as the head coach in name...let him recruit...and get someone else to run the show on gameday. Hey you can come in and be the head coach, you just won't actually be a head coach, and we won't pay you like it either. Who's going to do that? We already did the coordinator taking over thing for 2 years, and it didn't exactly produce the results we needed overall. Zook still caused huge problems.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 11:23 PM) They are going to need to get more people to the park, but keep in mind, starting in 2014, their TV money more than doubles from Fox, ESPN and Turner. They will be pulling in over $50 million a year from them. Its not entirely out of the realm of possibility the Sox have a higher payroll than most imagine in coming years. If every team gets increased money, it's all relative. It's not really a number that's the concern, it's more where you are at compared to everyone else.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 12:01 AM) Ron Zook was the first coach in almost 20 years to take Illinois to back-to-back bowl games, but he wasn't good enough and now we get this. And f*** Oklahoma, now we have to deal with all this bulls*** for longer It's such a shallow argument. OMG 2 BOWL GAMES! He should have been gone after 2009, if you think he should be here right now after OMG 2 BOWL GAMES, then you have super low expectations. QUOTE (zenryan @ Oct 28, 2012 -> 09:00 AM) Well after that? The entire catch process was probably 1 second long. Yes he had his hands under it but the top side of the ball hit the ground and then it bobbled into his stomach. If this was an offensive catch it would have been incomplete. The ball never hit the ground. There wasn't one look that showed the ball hitting the ground.
  14. Top 25 teams upset so far today: Rutgers Ohio Florida USC Wisconsin
  15. QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 06:27 PM) We gave them what 17+ points? We should have won today. Unfortunately, the team did what it has done best for awhile now (into the Zook era) and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Can the current coaching staff be expected to have all of our old problems fixed in one year? Our current recruiting class is currently ranked 36th by Scout and 27th by Rivals. We'll see how many kids he can keep on, but recruiting was the real strength of this staff when it was put together. He also seems to have more of a plan with regards to recruiting instead of just ignoring things like defensive backs and offensive tackles. It's also hard to know just how good our offensive staff is because of how bad our line has been. From the sounds of things, the players are having a hard time moving on from the last staff and buying into the current one. 2-3 things is all I can come up with. Maybe they fire the DC. All I know is Beckman is going to be here for a few years, so I'm going to give him a chance. It's not unheard of for a new coach to have a bad year to start out. I know it's not unheard of. And I was one of the last people here, or elsewhere, to really become disappointed with TB and the staff. I want to believe he can get the job done, and I'm really not the "fire the coach!!!!" guy. And I'm not saying that yet, but this is pretty disheartening. Week after week after week. Same mistakes, same sloppy ass football, I'm seeing no signs of life, no signs of being competent (at least on the field, recruiting is a different story but that's not the top issue right now). There hasn't been reason to really have any hope that things can be turned around. That's the worst part right now. It's not even the fact that we're losing, or not making a bowl game. It's how we're doing all of this.
  16. Wisconsin's (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) starting PG Gasser is out for the season with a torn ACL.
  17. QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 06:00 PM) Well, at the very least s***ting on your first year head coach isn't going to help anything. I expected 6 wins myself. The DC has been horrible, and I hope they fire him after the season. However, you can't deny that we've had a lot of injuries, and a lot of Zook's best talent has already left the team (or never even arrived). How high above IU do you see UI? Show me something from him that makes you feel good about the future. And if you can do that, list another few. Would love to see this list. Making excuses of injuries and talent is great, but what makes you feel good about this staff? It's been f***ing clown college, period. There's no way IU has more talent than UI, so talent, which you keep going back to, is not an excuse. And correct me if I'm wrong, isn't IU without their starting QB as well?
  18. QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 05:45 PM) You weren't aware of the injuries? Or, the lack of talent? What exactly is your point, that we should be satisfied with this? We lost to f***ing IU at home after an open week. Sorry for having such "high" expectations expecting more than 2 wins this year, with one being against a high school team, and not to be blown out by almost every real team, and show some sort of clue in the coaching department. Yeah, way off there, don't know what I was thinking.
  19. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 05:44 PM) Buckeye choke You need to take out the e's
  20. QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 05:35 PM) I don't get Illinois fans. We had almost no talent ready to replace the players who left the program after last year, and the schedule got more difficult. The highest expectations couldn't have been much more than 6 wins. I didn't expect Illinois to be this bad, but I also didn't expect Illinois to be good. And, with the amount of injuries we've had, it's kind of hard to expect much more than we've gotten. Were getting 2 wins, getting blown out, and not improving. I have no idea what the f*** you are talking about.
  21. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 04:32 PM) I think Beckman is doing a terrible job but there is zero returning talent on offense. The offense was absolutely abysmal last year and the only two legitimate players from that team are in the NFL. I thought this team could get to 6-6 or 7-6 on the strength of the defense like last year but only a handful of the guys on the offense are legitimate Big 10 players. No excuse for the defense to be this bad. I should have been more specific, yeah, I meant on defense. Because obviously the last 6 games last year where we averaged 7 points a game didn't leave much to be expected. It's not quite as depressing to watch the offense struggle (though there have been some terrible play calls), but the defense makes no sense. Never thought we'd get absolutely blown out in some of these games. Bailey SOS.
  22. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 04:24 PM) Zook also recruited absolutely no talent in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 classes. Seriously go pull up the commitments from those classes and the only guy who is an a very good Big 10 player is Brown. The RBs from last years class are ok but they aren't difference makers and I've heard good things about Caldwell and Davis but they haven't shown anything on the field. It is obviously early with the 2012 class but all of the guys actually getting playing time form that class are guys Beckman brought in late. Zook's recruiting in that class was hilariously bad before he got fired. The program is going to be a dumpster fire soon. It really is too bad Zook wasn't fired in 2009 like he should have been. No, I know the recruiting classes were bad, and he doesn't have a lot to work with. But he's not doing a good job with the little we have, or showing signs of football intelligence, for lack of a better term. There was a lot of returning "talent" from last year's team. Zero reason they should be this bad, or this stupid. Also, you said it's going to be a dumpster fire soon? I'd say we're there now... Yes, Zook should have been gone after 2009, would have saved this before the fall go to ground level.
  23. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 27, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) Second interview went great. Should know more in the next two weeks. If I get the job, I get pyrotechnics training... SCORE! Good luck Beavis.
