White Sox win draft lottery, will pick #1 in 2026
bighurt574 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't know what folks were saying the winter before but Crews was definitely being talked about as a potential 1-1 all the way up to draft day. Maybe Skenes was the obvious pick all along but there was definitely talk about what the Pirates would do. -
Doesn't make any sense to trade Teel now absent a godfather offer. The whole point of the rebuild is to find and develop guys like Teel.

Adrian Houser traded to TB for former top prospect Curtis Mead

Bingo. Not bad honestly. -

It's sort of on the GM to identify less heralded guys in other systems who are being undervalued and could fit the bill for these smaller trades. If nothing comes together that's sort of on him too. -
Luis Robert trade thread: La Pantera stays.

I don't know, we probably leaked that we're increasingly likely to hold Robert to try to build some leverage here in the next couple hours. -

If anyone asked, I'm sure we'd entertain talks on anybody (at least I'd sure hope so). It's not like we have untouchables. -

I think it would have to be JR willing to pay $20M on an otherwise cheap payroll to have the closest they'll get to a "star" name in the lineup to sell some extra tickets. With the reports that he has a decent market now, it's certainly a gamble that they'd increase his trade value enough by holding him a year and spending $20M in the process. -

3 team deal! I like the way you think! -
Yankees acquire Austin Slater for RHP Gage Ziehl

Ziehl slots in as our #14 prospect per mlb.com. Not bad for Slater. White Sox Top Prospects | MiLB.com -

Just noticed that Spencer Jones is having a big year in AA/AAA. I know a lot of folks weren't sold on him when his name came up in the past (last year?). -

Seems like a solid enough return for a guy like Slater. I like the 70/14 K/BB ratio on the year. -
Obviously it's not going to happen under JR but there's really no reason a properly funded/run Sox franchise in Chicago couldn't afford those guys. MLB average payroll is around $170M.

We've done ok on the pitching side (especially if you go back to Sale, Rodon), but it's been way too long since we hit it big on a position player in the draft. Need to change that ASAP. Next year's pick in particular when we should have a top draft pick again. Having top 5 picks 2 years in a row and walking away with Madrigal and Vaughn was certainly a killer.
-
We're so far away from even being a .500 team. I have a hard time seeing it before 2029 at the earliest. And that's not just because that's the first time when JR might give up control -- we just have no offensive prospects at the upper minor league levels. And there's no chance JR spends on FA's unless we build from within first.
-
JR is still in control. A future right to purchase doesn’t change that. (And I’m a “corporate attorney,” if that matters.)
-
I think Griffey Jr. still has a little left.

It's quite astounding, and they all continued to suck at their new teams too (apart from maybe Moncada this year before he got hurt, again). I don't know that there's one answer. Eloy, Robert, and TA all turned into pumpkins. I'm sure injuries contributed. Madrigal and Vaughn were just terrible for having top 3-4 picks two years in a row. And it's not like the Sox were alone in highly valuing those guys either. Seems like obviously misevals in retrospect. -
It’s too bad we’re not a year or two (or a couple) further along and/or able to actually spend to make a move like this.
-
Just caved and bought an antenna a few weeks ago lol. And we have YouTubeTV, so I assume we're not getting CHSN any time soon.

Sox trade Andrew Vaughn to acquire Aaron Civale

Or earn a nice contract for next year. I get why he didn't want to go to the BP heading into FA. -
not sure the debt really matters — I assume that just reduces the purchase price.
-
I’m sure it was. Drives me friggin nuts that Reinsdorf won’t even give up control for the good of the franchise to smooth/expedite the transition. He can keep an ownership stake for a while for all I care. Stubborn sob. Insisting on having the right to control until he’s 98.
-
right, which is why I don’t find the timeline all that encouraging. Seems pretty close to a worst case scenario here. Still not sure why folks are saying only 4 years. Jerry isn’t giving up control in 4 years if he’s still around. Ishbia can’t force the issue until 2034, when Jerry would be 98!
-
4 years is best case scenario. Could be 2034. And it’s not like Reinsdorf is the type to give up control early. As long as he’s alive I guess.
-
I'm not sure it's so amazing that Reinsdorf has the ability to hold on through 2034. Yikes.
