  1. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 28, 2007 -> 10:48 PM) Go here: http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=72011 From Cobb to Ruth to Paige to Ashburn to Tinker to Evers to Chance. Actually, those last three aren't up, yet, if ever. But great players are. My favorite of the GIFs? Mel Ott, a forgotten star. Melvin Thomas "Mel" Ott (March 2, 1909 – November 21, 1958), nicknamed "Master Melvin", was a Major League Baseball right fielder who played his entire career for the New York Giants (1926-1947). Ott was born in Gretna, Louisiana. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed. The first National League player to surpass 500 home runs, he was unusually slight of stature for a power hitter, at 5'9" 170 lb. Great find. Thanks.
  2. Javier Lopez? The same guy who had already pitched in over 170 games for Colorado and Arizona?
  3. Now what is the list of players we got in return for those players?
  4. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 07:35 AM) Hasnt Giles been less than average since drug testing became a little tougher? Yes he has, but you could probably say 1/3 of the league has been less than average since drug testing.
  5. QUOTE(max power @ Jan 9, 2008 -> 10:37 AM) No kidding. The only deals that seem to happen for the sox aren't reported until they are finalized. If we list all the major deals, has there ever been even one that has been rumored before it happened, other than mild speculation?
  6. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Asgo...p&type=lgns Wow, that would've been nice for the Sox to pick him up, if only for a minor league contract.
  7. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 09:23 PM) Travis Hafner 2006: .308/.439/.659 Travis Hafner 2007: .268/.385/.451 I could only imagine how this board would react if Thome had a 260 point drop in his OPS. That was an amazing decline. In 545 ABs, he only hit 24 HRs, compared to 42 HRs in 454 ABs in 2006. 18 less HRs in 91 more ABs. Injury, lack of PEDs?
  8. Thanks to all the admins AND posters for making this one of the best communities on the internet. I have wasted countless hours here, and it is the first place I come for sports news in general. I get a kick out of how some things are posted here before they are on the major media websites.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 02:53 PM) I picked up one little nugget about B-12 shots that I didn't know beforehand from an ESPN piece a few days ago. Also, here's a BG piece with another witness saying that he saw Clemens inject himself with B-12. Meanwhile, here's a couple doctors asked about Lidocaine usage. They seem to both agree...the strangest part would be getting it shot into your ass. I heard something like that before, but this confirms it. So basically anyone saying they take B-12 shots are doing so to mask something else they are taking. Now didn't Tejada say that Palmiero gave him B-12, and Bonds said he took it as well? If you need B-12, just take a vitamin. Now that is funny.
  10. Clemens looked bad. He was clearly lying. I guess he thinks he can save face with the lawsuit, which will take years to complete. He also never seemed to say that McNamee was completely false or lying (so he wouldn't be sued), which makes him look even worse. He didn't really poke any holes in the report, except to say that he did not do it.
  11. QUOTE(Lemon_44 @ Jan 7, 2008 -> 06:17 AM) Throw in the fact that the Indians have what may be the worst manager in baseball and i think these teams are pretty much dead even. I know i'm looking at this from a Sox perspective but i think it comes to down to whose bullpen performs better this year will have the better team. THe Indians are younger but the Sox hitters, at least you wouldn't think, can't have as bad a year as what they went through last year. I'll say the Tigers win the division but the Sox and Indians will be in a dogfight for the WC with NY,Bos,and Sea(i think the Angels walk away with the west). I agree that the race will be much closer than everyone is making it out to be. We played .500 ball vs CLE and DET in 2007. If we showed up in interleague play (4-14) our record would not have been so horrible. We were also 1-7 vs BOS and 1-7 vs SEA. Detroit is the class of the division, but with a solid run the Sox and Indians are right there.
  12. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 11:52 PM) I just want my question answered. Yeesh. Taken from TalkBears: QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 12:17 AM) I saw DLS in that summer minor league all-star game, I forget the name of it, and DLS has pure nasty stuff.
  13. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) I don't care, make fun of me all you want. People called me crazy a couple years ago for wanting Teahan over Crede, we all saw how that turned out... granted it was on a different board. You have a 50% chance of being right about any transaction. Even ones that never happen. This is a deal that needs to be evaluated in a couple of years.
  14. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jan 5, 2008 -> 08:47 AM) Its funny cause i remember watching O Cab all these years having unique little handshakes with his teamates. . I think Buerhle is going to love these guys... So you are saying that they are going to have a dancing handshake after every HR? Sweet.
  15. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) I just love getting those type of guys on your team. It makes it fun to root for. I really am getting excited for baseball season because unlike last year, this years team at least has some guys that I really look forward to watching play the game. I also think they have some young guys with talent and if they develop the Sox may end up surprising.I agree, he is a high energy guy that brings excitement to the team. That is contagious too. You have to think the other players are excited to have him too.
  16. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 12:55 PM) Can someone point me to one of this guys posts? http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=1552776
  17. QUOTE(lostfan @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) Detroit's 2008 lineup, barring major injuries, might even be better than ours was in 2006. That lineup won us 90 games. I can't see some of the Tigers having the same kind of years as they did in 2007. Magglio played out of his mind, I can only imagine that he will regress. I-Rod is now 36, there will probably be a huge drop-off with him. Renteria was not as good in the AL the last time and Jones is their starting LF. Sheffield is in his post-roid era, will be 39 and Todd Jones will be 40. Rogers is 43 and Willis is bringing a +5 ERA from the NL. The lineup will still be good because MCab will offset most of the decline from the other players, but they will still have some holes, and they are not getting any younger. I-Rod - 36 Guillen - 32 Polanco - 32 Renteria - 32 Cabrera - 25 Jones - 33 Granderson -27 Ordonez - 34 Sheffield - 39 On average, the Tigers lineup is over 2 years older than the Sox. If we drop Thome and Dye within the next two years, our oldest starter would be OCab. If he is not re-signed, then it would be Konerko. So the Sox are only a couple of players away from being young and cheap throughout the lineup. The Tigers only have 2 players under 30, and 3 if you count Thames as a starter over Jones. They can quickly become the Giants of the AL if they are not careful.
  18. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 08:48 PM) It will be interesting to see if the home run dance he did with Bradley makes its way over to the South Side... He is going to need a HR dance for all the HRs he is going to hit at the Cell.
  19. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 08:46 PM) I remember saying earlier this summer that I enjoy watching a guy that looks like he's having fun playing baseball. That's Swish. I love this trade. He has spirit. That is going to liven up the clubhouse.
  20. Swisher can play 1B. Wouldn't it be nice to have Swisher move to 1B and Paulie DH against LHP?
  21. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) This is from Chicagosports.com You guys are going to love Swisher - and he's signed through 2011. Billy may have gotten the better on this deal, but you guys got a fan favorite who will fit in well and contribute for several years. Posted by: A's Fan | Jan 3, 2008 2:58:42 PM Yep, this is definitely a move for 2008. KW is not looking beyond that.
  22. How about: .921 OPS vs LHP in 2007 1.022 OPS @ The Cell (Career)
  23. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:20 PM) Our terrible minor league system just got a hell of a lot worse today thanks to this.Yeah it does, but the minor league system doesn't win championships. It might be sexy to have a deep farm system, but very few teams have won with that alone. You can either use the farm system to groom players, or you can use them as trading assets. Obviously KW went the latter route. Also, the Sox now have veterans to flip at the trading deadline if things don't work out.
