  1. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 10:28 PM) i like Sprecher as well. I was there when they opened in 1985. They treated the college kids really well knowing we would grow up and continue to drink the product. I'm not familiar with Central Waters but i'm willing to learn. I don't usually make it that far north but everything from the website looks good. Sprecher's Tripel is surprisingly good, especially for the price. Lakefront is a solid brewery as well. Closer to Madison we have Vintage (which ranges from decent to outstanding) and O'so and Tyranena (both in the solid category). The beer that's easiest micro to get around here is from Ale Asylum. Unfortunately, they are a consistent disappointment aside from their belgian IPA, which is awesome.
  2. I know that people outside WI only think of New Glarus but Central Waters is also a solid brewery (among many others). Right now I'm drinking a CW Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout and it is fantastic. The vanilla and hint of cherry rounds the roasted coffee really well. Just a nice touch of malted milk. Careful at 9.5%.
  3. QUOTE (Capn12 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 11:29 AM) Must be nice to actually be able to get NG stuff. Sucks for anyone outside of Wisconsin that actually wants to try it, though. Same deal with Hill Farmstead in Vermont. Plenty of stuff both make, that will never see the light of day outside of their states, and DEFINITELY not down in South Carolina. I will never forget my trip to Hill Farmstead and Alchemist. I recommend that everyone take a trip to Vermont. Awesome state.
  4. QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 3, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) Currently sipping on a Laughing Fox. So damn good. It's similar to a Fin du Monde or Hoegaarden. That's an awesome beer. It's not at all to style but who cares.

Just because they had no background doesn't mean they didn't have great advisors. Sorry but read Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. I don't know how anyone runs a restaurant.

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 02:19 PM) How does one get informational interviews? Yes, we have had this conversation before, but I'm coming back because I don't know what to do anymore. There are lots of jobs for ChEs......if you have 5 years of experience. For those of us who have none, not so much. I went to IIT. You get informational interviews by looking up leaders in the field at places you'd dream of working at and email them to set up a time to talk for 15 or 20 mins about careers. I can send you samples of emails I sent. Some people respond, others don't. Some might only be able to answer questions via email. Remember that they are doing you a favor so take what you can get. The goal is to get names of other people that might be worth contacting. Don't try to get a job through the person you are calling because they don't really know you. The benefit is that eventually it will allow you to tap into the unlisted job market if you call the right person at the right time. It also gives you the chance to ask people in your field for advice. By using these interviews I was made aware of a job that was posted but I had not seen for whatever reason. I barely got my résumé in on time but that's the job I now have. I also met some people that got me involved with a nonprofit and a beer website. Frankly it helped me just get out. A friend of mine landed a job at a big law firm by doing this. It took months before it paid off but the person he called ended up putting in his name for an opening. She made no promises but that's probably how he got an interview and he ended up with the job.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 04:13 AM) I agree with your statement in the first paragraph. Are there any storybook marriages anymore? Where neither side plays games and the man and woman are best friends and enter into a life of bliss? Or is it constantly trying to play "the game" like what you described where the girl will only come back if the guy no longer cares whether she does or not? Um... My marriage has never been about playing games. And yes we were and are best friends. That doesn't mean it's always blissful. Life is hard man.

QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 03:45 AM) I have a degree in chemical engineering. I am willing to go anywhere in the country at the moment. I have always wanted to go into biofuels/green technologies, but if I can't do that I'm not sure what other field I would like to go into, which is part of the problem. I'm having a hard time finding open positions for a bachelors level engineer with no experience. I have tried to get into an internship before but the companies that I have spoken with say that they won't give me that opportunity because I have already graduated. Just been frustrated beyond belief that I can't get an interview with anyone in my field. I waver back and forth on the low paying jobs because some days I feel like any opportunity is worth having, and some days I feel angry that I have busted my ass to become a chemical engineer and I may have to work for peanuts. I have bills to pay(mainly student loans) and I would probably be broke if I took the low paying job anyway and just have less time and still no money, and I might forget the stuff I learned in college if I am out of engineering much longer. I don't know what to do right now. Have you done informational interviews? I feel like we've had this conversation before... But if you aren't getting real interviews then you have to be doing informational interviews just so you have a chance to talk to people.

    Leftovers

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 04:49 PM) Minus the cream cheese, that's what I made. It's delicious!!!! The first one I ever ate was at Earl of Sandwich at Walt Disney World. I was hooked. The Earl is awesome. My wife makes a killer thanksgiving sandwich with turkey, stuffing, cheddar and cranberry.
  10. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 26, 2012 -> 12:46 AM) The Imbibe recipes are usually a very good starting point for classic cocktails. Rumdood's eggnog recipe, usually with Coruba, has been my default eggnog recipe since he posted it a few years ago.http://rumdood.com/2009/12/08/egg-nogg/ Didn't care for the Coruba in Egg Nog. I preferred the black seal and brandy. It's my furlough day...well it was. I spent a little time drinking. Grabbed a few good things but the Noel des Geants by Brasserie des Geants is excellence. Spicy, peppery, fruity, belgian goodness.

    Job Hunt Thread

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 30, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) I got a text from my wife asking me if I had ever applied for a job in Sun Prairie, Wis. I told her that I couldn't remember ever applying for anything there but it's been a long time since I've applied for a job anywhere. She gave me the name and number of the person that called and it's a number out of Baltimore, MD. I called it and he said he has a position with a substantial salary (about 30% more than what I'm making now) plus medical and relocation costs. The city is only about an hour from my house so I don't think I'd need the relocation costs but it sounds interesting. He sent me an email with a few basic questions and 3 different open positions. One of the questions is asking for the last 4 digits of my SS#. Then he called me back 20 minutes after he sent the email to see if I had responded yet. He told me the name of the company but I cannot find a location for them in Wisconsin. They are a company based out of India and are actually a part of HP. The guy I spoke with had a very thick Indian accent. I'm just getting a weird vibe from this. It's odd that he would just call me out of the blue like that. I'm guessing he found my resume on one of the job search sites or something but I haven't been actively looking for a couple of years. Not quite sure how to proceed. I read some reviews about working for the company and they are listed as a solid "OK". Not good, not bad. I actually live in Sun Prairie, WI (just outside Madison). If you want to PM me the company I can see if I've heard of them or know where they might be.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2012 -> 01:23 PM) Apparently the investigators in the Casey Anthony trial only turned over the browser result from Internet Explorer, and not Firefox. If they had, they could have found a search for "foolproof suffocation" done the day of the murder. http://www.clickorlando.com/news/Cops-pros...7z/-/index.html Doesn't matter. She was not guilty because there was no direct evidence. They had a ton of Internet searches.
  13. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 26, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) And you haven't done this yet because . . . Sounds good in movies but that's real life trouble.
  14. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 25, 2012 -> 06:00 PM) two things can be done at once... ;) I mean how long into the movie did things get...amorous. I don't know if it would be totally awkward or totally fun.
  15. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 25, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) My wife and I watched an "adult" movie together last night for the first time... that ended very well for me. So how long did you actually watch the movie?
  16. Mixed up some real ass egg nog. Used some kinda cheap brandy and goslings rum. Went by the recipe from Imbibe. For some reason I don't think I'd ever used that recipe and instead always opted for a basic flip. This was really good. Much smoother and far less rich. For forbid I might actually have to write a post on Flapship.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 22, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) Pitchers never get talked about when it comes to steroids. I think it's cause it's not as noticeable like it is with the home run hitters. It's not like pitchers suddenly start throwing 105 mph and striking out 20 a game. Except Roger Clemens...and Andy Pettitte...and Jim Parque.
  18. So I'm thinking of asking for a good rye for Christmas. Something expensive enough that I wouldn't normally pay for it but not ridiculous either. Maybe $50-75? Any thoughts on stuff that is must try?
  19. Well get used to it cuz Cutler ain't playing next week I'd guess.
  20. Campbell is checking down before primary receivers are out of their breaks.
  21. Boy that real backup qb isn't looking so real.
  22. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 04:21 PM) Hmmm, so i wonder who didnt like him and wanted him out Whoever found out that this woman might have access to his email. Apparently affairs for the CIA is serious s***.
  23. QUOTE (SexiAlexei @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 04:22 PM) Thanks for the input Badger. I've tried Ian's, which is some good drunk pizza. Maybe I'll try it in Madison, since I believe that's the original... I'm not a real club type of person, so I'll take your advice and walk down state street. Hopefully badger fans won't be too angry after the game. I know that some college campuses have their must visit spots. I saw "The Old Fashioned" was on the food channel for their cheese curds, that might be worth a visit as well. Um...Hi. It depends on whether you want a college atmosphere or slightly more gown up. Old Fashioned is really good. Great Dane brewery is also around the square. If you are closer to Camp Randall, so to Brasserie V for Belgian fare.
  24. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 12:12 AM) I haven't seen so i didn't know In that case, check out ABC. It's...odd.
