QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) I think there is a lot more peer pressure on what to drink when you are in college. As you get older you drink what you like, not to proove your manhood. Agreed. Also I would rather spend for quality rather than quantity. In college it was definitely the opposite.

This might have been posted but whatever: I'm sure the Rays asked for a Cabrera type package and that ended the talks. Sun Times

WHO will replace SCOTTY in the Pontiac FUNdamentals base stealing area
G&T replied to yoyozuna's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Cabrera since he's guaranteed to be on the team for the whole season. Although they should have one of Konerko. Ya know, for the larger children to race. -
I suddenly feel that my 292-58-0 isn't so great. Some of your scores are ridiculous.

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 04:00 PM) To me the good couple of months are not the only reason he should be kept. I agree with what wite said. You won't get anything of value for him and you have to pay part or a lot of his salary. and whichever AAA guy takes his spot in the rotation will, in my estimation, be worse. If he legitimately has some physical problems, A) I think any team would do every examination possible to make sure they don't get Garcia-ed, or B) the Sox severely hurt their reputation by trading another injured pitcher. blah, blah, blah.......I feel relatively sure that we won't trade Contreras (unless perhaps at the deadline if we're out of it again) and that he'll have a better year than he did last year. In reality he probably won't be traded. I just think he will be hurt, but there is no way to know that.

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:27 PM) Contreras has 2 years, Garcia was going into his walk year. Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that the poster's logic was that Contreras had a good couple of months at the end of last season and, therefore, he should be kept. The fact that he has 2 years left on his deal is all the more reason to try to move him if his problems are physical and won't go away so easily.

Williams: "Linebrink + Cabrera = 1 Jon Garland."
G&T replied to TheBigHurt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:18 PM) There are plenty of ways to clear payroll that doesn't involve your biggest trading chip. Linebrink and Cabrera might equal Garland for this season, but Linebrink and Cabrera do not equal Garland next year or the year after or the year after. Cabrera is going to need to be resigned. Linebrink will get a salary increase. Then next year, someone else will have to get dumped to make up for it. Why does it have to be the main trading chip that accounts for the cut in salary? We lack talent in this organization. We can make up money in many different places. We can't acquire talent from many different places. But Garland will get a substantial raise too and might make more per year than Cabrera and Linebrink...so it probably will equal out. I understand what you are saying, but how do you know that the prospect they could have received was any good? The organization needs talent, but a throw in prospect isn't going to change anything. -

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 02:33 PM) A statement like that can insinuate that KW doesn't get complete value for his player. In this case Garland. Like he's not worried about getting everything he can for Garland because he knows he'll signed Linebrink with the excess cash. You traded Garland for Cabrera. We should not look at the trade any differently. You didn't get Linebrink in the deal. Same for Carlos Lee. You got Pods, Viz, and a scrub. You did not get AJ or Iguchi in the deal. Worry about getting maximum value for your players. Perhaps it was maximum value, I don't know, but stop talking like that. Like we're some low budget wretch of a team. That's not really true. He got money in place of another player. Why should he automatically take another player that he doesn't want when he can use the money to sign a guy he does want? If the choice was between $1.5 million and a prospect that probably won't crack the bigs, or won't contribute as much as Linebrink, then he did get max value. -
GM says Sox have options (Chicago Sports.com article)
G&T replied to sox-r-us's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 08:01 AM) I highly doubt Tampa would trade Crawford now since they just shipped off Young. I also am beginning to agree that KW has no plan... Whatever happening to getting a lot of things done BEFORE the Winter Meetings? Im guessing everything he is offering to the other teams is just not good enough... it seems like every trade he has done the past 2 seasons, the other GM came up to him... thats no good. I think part of the problem is that the trade market exploded in off season. Which would be a great thing if the Sox had a farm system, but instead the market has hurt the Sox. I think he expected to deal Crede early in the off season, but then A-Rod re-signed with the Yankees (a possible trading partner), Lowell re-signed with the Red Sox, and Miguel Cabrera became available, which means other trade partners are now waiting to see where he lands. He might have expected to trade a bat like Konerko to get younger players from a team like the Dodgers, but instead MCab and Santana are available and teams with the youngsters are going after them. Meanwhile, the Hunter didn't work out. Basically, he had a plan, but now his players don't have the value he expected because there are better players out there. This would have been the best off season in a long time to turn this team around, if they had the young talent to deal. Instead KW has to wait for the market to come to him. -

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 07:37 AM) I have a feeling KW has no plan now that Hunter blew him off....hell he could have gotten Delmon Young and was sleeping during that move....yeah I know its early and the sky is falling. I actually kind of agree. I think he has a hope that he can land Crawford or Cabrera, but he doesn't have the chips. I'm getting that feeling that he'll make a move for Crisp, then say they are done. But it's usually when I least expect something to happen that a move is made. -
QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 07:05 AM) Rowand out of picture Crisp a more likely target for Sox; Taveras a possibility November 28, 2007 BY JOE COWLEY [email protected] It's an easy assumption to make. Chicago SunTimes Link The White Sox watched the Los Angeles Angels nab Torii Hunter from their grasp for 90 million reasons last week, and they're still in the market for a center fielder. Meanwhile, South Side cult hero Aaron Rowand, who never has met a center-field wall that he wouldn't try to run through, is at home in Las Vegas, still a free agent. Easy, right? Wrong. According to a Sox source close to the situation, Rowand actually was Plan 1-A this offseason, and the Sox contacted him before they started talking numbers with Hunter to see if the sides were in the same neighborhood. They weren't even in the same area code. I meant to bring this up last week. He said they were at Plan B after saying there was a Plan 1A and 1B, then Plan B. I assumed he meant 1B, which apparently was Hunter, but KW would slip something like that in. On the other hand, KW did say that they were on track to land the guy they wanted for the last two seasons, so that might still be Rowand. Interesting article anyway.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) I agree completely. However for the most part, whenever someone gets me a shot thats normally what I end up drinking. Also, my friend, a guy, is on the strangest Mikes Hard Lemonade kick and its beginning to scare and/or bother me. Mikes is too sweet. I haven't had one in many years but I remember my stomach hurting and not being very drunk.

The Yankees don't worry about chemistry and make the playoffs every year. They lose in the playoffs because they can't pitch. The Cubs made the playoffs last year despite having a fight between a pitcher and catcher. I realize Barett was traded, but I doubt they had great chemistry. They got swept because of a lack of talent. I'm sure there are plenty more examples. If Rowand is the best guy for this team on the field, then get him. But if this team is losing, Rowand's smile isn't going to bring wins. That said, if KW sacrifices talent for chemistry, then that clubhouse must be awful.

Hey you scooped the Score. Just reported but no financial details.

The answer is Jenks. All he needs is a couple shots of whiskey and he should be ready to go.

QUOTE(max power @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 05:17 PM) So he has had it at least since may of 2006. He wasn't exactly terrible in 06, so I am not sure what to think about it affecting his pitching. Then again he was s***ty the second half of 06 right? Yeah, if I recall, the sciatia benched him by the end of the first half and when he returned he couldn't pitch. He's been bad since. BTW, I'm not saying that it isn't partially mental. I know Coop did say that at the end of last year that he had a confidence problem. I just doubt that's the real problem with JC's pitching.
-
So they aren't shocked by the $275 - $300 million A-Rod deal (when no other team would come close to that price), and they aren't shocked by the Torii Hunter $90 million deal (where no other team was within $15 million), but this is a sign that the industry is going crazy again? Maybe they say that because it's a middle reliever, but I don't think this is the deal to complain about for baseball as a whole. I don't know maybe I'm wrong on this one.
-
QUOTE(max power @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 02:59 PM) He is 37 by his own accidental admission. I don't remember his "back problems" but you(G&T) may be right. I trust that if there are real back problems, the sox would be looking to dump him. Otherwise, I don't think we have a chance at winning with 3 young guys in our starting rotation, and we have already committed to trying to win this year, so I see dumping him as a bad move. He's had sciatia since 2006. So technically that's not a back problem. It's a nerve problem. I knew there was something. Link to a site from 2006

QUOTE(max power @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 01:19 PM) Freddy had diminishing talent/stuff due to physical issues. With contreras most people agree with cooper in that his problems are mental in the form of low confidence. It seems he has regained that confidence. Doesn't he have a bad back? I'm fairly certain he does.

I've been working my way through the micro brews FlaSoxx and others suggested a few months ago. I'm definitely into weizen bocks right now. I'm not a fan of anything Leinenkugels for whatever reason...but I'd take it over Bud.

This is the same logic that said we should have kept Freddy. He looked good the last month of '06, then couldn't pitch in '07. If KW can clear some of the salary and get some value he has to do it. The money saved can go to Colon or someone else who can be an injury risk for less money.

I can't imagine that Boras will accept a deal for less than what Hunter was paid.
