Paul Skrbina @ChiTribSkrbina Joel Quenneville when asked whether Corey Crawford's injury was career-threatening: "Not sure about that. Too far out (to tell)."
  3. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 01:22 PM) Possibly it's hard to feel sorry for and give the benefit of the doubt considering his own history *cough* Mike Sirotka. I do know the Red Sox were given the option of avoiding the trade so if they did some real shady stuff we would have had the same opportunity. That is absolutely a ridiculous leap, especially when the Padres were busted by the league for improprieties. This just comes off as petty.
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 01:02 PM) ETFs are free falling right now. I don't have the tech analysis to know when to get in. For my two cents, I would always stick with the top companies when it comes to using ETF's. There are more than a few ETF's who only track what they are tracking, and they do not hold any physical representations of what they are trying to track. Stick with the SP, IShares and Powershares products. Second, if this is a longer term play, don't try too hard to pick a bottom to buy at. People who pick bottom's get s*** on their fingers.
  5. The fact that the Padres also conned the White Sox on Shields medicals also keeps getting left out of the debate.
  6. QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 10:08 AM) What's everyone's take on gold right now? The dollar is looking very weak. If it continues to weaken in this high inflation environment the commodities seem like a nice play. Add in the possibility of the fed hiking rates and it looks pretty ripe. Pretty good buying opportunity this morning for the gold etfs. Longer term with the massive issuing of debt, the inevitable collapse of bond prices because of it, and the fall of the dollar, I do like gold.

  10. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 09:35 AM) I think if he was properly scouted he would have never been moved and if Shields was properly scouted he would have been never traded for. It wasn't like Tatis was part of some reverse Sale trade he was traded for a terrible pitcher who was pitching awful when he was acquired. Or to use another example remember when the Jays traded for Donaldson and it was some A ball player I think it was Barreto(sic) well he was ranked 33rd last year if memory serves. I think they got him plus Lawrie. That's sort of how you would have liked Tatis used in a trade but clearly the FO didn't think he was an up and coming prospect. Like I said they need to evaluate what ever processes led them to there because it was a huge miss. This is why everytime I read us connected to some sort of trade like Machado or Yelich I cringe not only because I don't think were ready because I'm not sure I trust the FO to decide which of the top prospects to trade or keep. Solid gymnastics to be pissed about both ends of things.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 09:13 AM) comps are so silly. All you are going to get for Hansen is some major leaguer that's really tall, Jimenez a big power hitter, Kopech someone that throws hard, and Dunning somebody that wears glasses. Nobody knows what Robert really looks like yet on this board at least. But he'll probably get comped to a Cuban. From the skillset that is talked about, the name Jackie Bradley Jr comes to mind. No idea what he actually looks like though. Another is Andrew McCutcheon with better defense.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 07:15 AM) Yes, they did scout him and did sign him. In fact they gave Tatis a pretty big signing bonus -- something like $2.5 million, IIRC. Then they never gave him a chance to play, trading him for arguably the worst player then in the majors. It's a head shaker. Uh, no. Try again.
  13. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:37 PM) Here is a portion the updated writeup: Tatis Jr. has all the ingredients to become an offensive force in the Majors, as his bat speed, leveraged swing and overall capacity to make adjustments all portend a future plus hitter with plus power. He proved vulnerable to spin and sequencing early in the year but tightened his approach as the season progressed en route to pacing the Midwest League with 75 walks. Many evaluators believe Tatis Jr. is merely scraping the surface of his offensive potential, as he still has considerable room to grow into his tall and athletic frame. That larger frame doesn't currently impede Tatis Jr.'s abilities at shortstop, where he makes highlight-reel plays on a daily basis thanks to his athleticism, range and rocket arm, though further physical development could ultimately force him to third base. Even if that's case, Tatis Jr.'s bat gives him the ceiling of a perennial All-Star, possibly even an MVP candidate in his prime." I'm sort of over the trade but I hope Tatis is a teachable moment and they correct whatever caused them to mis-evaluate him so badly. So they only get dinged for trading him. Apparently they don't get any credit at all for scouting him and signing him. This is exactly why people get so angry about the trading getting brought up ad naseum.

  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:59 AM) No, it means when they were negotiating Yolmer's agent was giving them a higher number, then they went with a lower number to the arbitrator that they thought could win. If Yolmers agent was asking for a higher number than means they were closer than $250k in negotiations. That makes it worse, as they weren't $250k apart, maybe they were $100k or $150k.
  21. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 07:06 PM) The Peavy article is a good one. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2756799...-shattered-life Seconded. Great read.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 07:37 PM) According to Hahn in the athletic, he implies the players filed for numbers lower than they were giving the White Sox. So that means the gap was even narrowing than $250k for Yolmer? That makes it worse, not better in his case.
  23. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 02:57 PM) They planned to move him to 3B, though. If Torres and Andujar are as good as most think, they won't have room for Machado, especially if they also get Harper. Eh, I think you underestimate the Yankees ability and willingness to spend for incremental upgrades.
  24. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 10:18 PM) Why does everyone think this when the Yankees have a potential logjam on the left side of their infield with Gregorius, Torres, and Andujar? Why would they make that worse by signing Machado? They went out and brought in Arod when they had a Hall of Famer at SS. If they think he will improve them that much, they will bring him in.
