I mean if we want to get right down to it, the Sox signed Carlton Fisk and The Bull after a 90 loss season. The Sox would have to improve 31 whole games to improve to the point where they were as bad as when the Sox signed Fisk and Bull. In that year they moved up to a team that was 2 games over .500 when the strike happened, but make that an entire season, and they are 82-80, or 10 games better than they were the previous year. Are a lot of people running out to buy tickets for this as a 111 loss team instead of a 121 loss team?

Trying to convince people that a nine year deal based on a guy who had 3 decent years in a 9 year contract is a move all right, especially after he was both traded and then released for the last 3 full years, even with the trading team picking up parts of the contract.

It's almost as if player development is the most important thing going forward with this rebuild and learning how to draft and develop internal young talent is more important than the free agent market. Nah, all the Benintendi's!!!

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Any longer term Sox fans can tell you the Sox fan base is very fair weather. Put together a product worth seeing consistently and they will be back. They always do. But it isn't like an extra half a million tickets in 2025 hinge on this team signing an international SS that almost the entire fan base has no one knows who is. This year is going to be bad. Really bad. A Benintendi level deal or 3 doesn't change that.

I will say this deal gives the Dodgers a couple of more pieces that Sox could be interested in with the extra pick and a highly regarded OF prospect. A deal could form around an OF prospect (DePaula/Sirota), one of their young Latin SSs (Vargas/Morales) the pick, and maybe even a 40 man guy they want to free up or a guy almost out of options.
