The problem is simple: it's home runs and .OPS
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 04:10 PM) Runs are harder to come by. A home run guarantees you at least one run, whereas any other hit does not guarantee you a run. The White Sox are hitting drastically less home runs in 3 of the past 4 years. Yet the team that is leading all of MLB by far in HR is 11th in runs scored. The team that is 2nd in HR/G is 7th. It isn't as full of a correlation as you want it to be. You know what the leader in R/G is leading MLB in? OBP. The second place team in R/G is 3rd in OBP. The 3rd place team in R/G is 2nd in OBP. Now that is some correlation. The White Sox are 19th in OBP, and 23rd in R/G. This team needs to get more guys on. Period.

The problem is simple: it's home runs and .OPS
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 03:43 PM) Blackjack, ok. I hear you on runs scored. I am, and have been, talking about home runs. The average MLB team hit 190 home runs in 2000. The average MLB team will hit 188 home runs in 2016. Can you explain why the White Sox should have reduced home runs compared to the Steroid era when the MLB totals really aren't down? Thank you. So while the rate of HR/G hasn't changed much since 2000 (1.166 this year, 1.172 in 2000) runs per game has fallen off drastically. Then it was 5.14, now it is 4.48. So while homers are slightly down, runs scored are hugely down. That is over a 10% drop off. That is reflected in the OPS+ numbers. As a team we are ever so slightly below average with a 99 OPS+ today. What it looks like to me is a team that is largely unlucky or unclutch. Take your pick. Our OPS+ is essentially league average, but we are creating 4.19 R/G when the average is 4.48.

U.S. Cellular Field history...
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 03:26 PM) 2017 White Sox win the divison. I don't think anyone buying a 29th row upper deck ticket would be expecting a great view, no matter what venue. Except for maybe one. And the thing is that not only has it been over a decade, but Sox park is far from the only place designed like this. Read up on the upper deck of Toronto for a start.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 02:28 PM) No matter what people may think of Bush's choices as President, I feel comfortable saying: 1) I dont think Bush is a bad person. Whatever choices he made, I truly believe he made them because he thought they were the best for the majority, not because they were in some way the best for him. 2) If I had the choice of Bush or Trump, I would pick Bush. Even if Bush is likely more conservative, I still would trust him a million times more. 3) Post Presidency Bush has been nothing but a good model for America, which kind of carries on the tradition of other Presidents. Now I may disagree with a lot of things that happened, but its easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize. Plus, I think a lot of people misunderstood his humor. When I read that "Now watch this drive", it makes me laugh. When all you hear is doom/gloom, maybe its good that you have a guy in power who enjoys the little things. Bush always struck me as having a quirky sort of sense of humor. Like he would find something hilarious, and no one else would get it. I know plenty of people like that.

QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 02:25 PM) Melky and Eaton both have a .790 OPS. Melky has hit 37 doubles and he and Eaton are slugging in the .440 and .430 range, respectively. If you think that those two are a drag on the run production simply because they don't hit as many homers as you'd like, you're wrong. As I've said twice already, the lack of HRs from DH is and has been a major problem. That's something that will have to be addressed this off-season. Saladino and Shuck are also part of the HR problem, but those two are only getting regular playing time because of injuries. Replace them with Lawrie and a halfway decent CF and you'll see the HR production increase. FWIW, the Sox are a good 20 or so HRs ahead of where they were last season. That can be attributed to Frazier. If Lawrie didn't get hurt and Abreu hit normally in the first half of this season, they'd be a good 35 HRs ahead of where they were last season. Melky and his .790 OPS is a 117 OPS+ this season. Again, Jose Valentin and his .835 OPS from 2000 was a 107 OPS+. In other words Melky is rated 10% higher than Jose was in his season, despite better looking numbers.

The one thing that was really obvious from who they targeted in this last draft is that they are looking for guys who get on base. My guess is that means they aren't looking for as much of the power tools as they had been. They also seem to have been targeting more of those kind of guys when you look at guys like Gordon and Fowler that they targeted in free agency.

Who Will Be The Next Manager of the White Sox
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) Whatever the reason, if they choose Rick Renteria to manage next season, it's ridiculous that he wasn't managing at some point this season when it was clear that Ventura was in his final season. I know it's probably Rick's choice. That's a disservice to the organization though. It would be my guess that he made that clear up front. I know that was a reason that other candidates passed up the bench manager position.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 01:59 PM) https://www.wbez.org/shows/morning-shift/rh...m_source=Eloqua There is a lot in there but the trauma stuff I think is right. You could dump 10k therapists into chicago and I'm not sure it would be enough. I know it isn't on the scale of Chicago, but we have a pretty decent poverty problem in my home town after the collapse of manufacturing and industry. I have spent a lot of time with kids here and the one thing that just jumps out at me is how angry some of them are, pretty much at everything and everyone. That radiates out from them and reverberates to everyone they come in contact with. I have no idea how to solve it, but it is absolutely something that feeds into how they interact with people of authority. It creates such a tension with everything, and it creates so many life or death situations in places where they shouldn't exist. As a society we seem to barreling towards a situation where we are making the choice between being more comfortable with either more cops or more civilians dying in this situations.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 01:56 PM) http://www.cbsnews.com/news/george-w-bush-...r-golf-outings/ I have gained a ton of respect for W since he left the White House. By and large he has stayed out of the way of the President, respected the office, and let him run the country, not involving politics in things. The times where he has made himself known in public it has been in an effort to support Obama as a person, and/or to do something positive for the country.

The problem is simple: it's home runs and .OPS
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) Those years the team didn't win, they didn't win because we had one of the worst strings of 5th starting carousels that I can ever remember (and in general, relatively lousy pitching). Offense was streaky at times, but the bigger theme was we had 5th starters who didn't win for what seemed like 2 years (because they stunk...not because we didn't generate runs) and when you had a pretty much guaranteed probability of losing every 5th game, the club was in a tough spot to overcome that. Its Dejavu all over again.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 12:39 PM) In 2000, MLB teams average 190 HR per team In 2016, so far they are averaging 177 HR per team through 152 games played. Extrapolating this out to 162 games would be 188 HR per team. Let me put it this way. The 2000 season you quoted for Valentin he carried an .835 OPS, which put an OPS+ of 107 out there. Jose Abreu is carrying a .836 right now, which is good for a 129 OPS+. There is a very large difference in offensive output between those two years.

The problem is simple: it's home runs and .OPS
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 12:32 PM) Most middle infielders from those aforementioned teams: 2000 Jose Valentin - 25 HR, .835 OPS 2000 Ray Durham - 17 HR, .810 OPS 2005 Tadahito Iguchi - 15 HR, .780 OPS 2008 Alexei Ramirez - 21 HR .792 OPS It is tough to pull from the steroid era, but I think Tim Anderson will put up solid power numbers eventually. He has a super quick bat and hits a lot of line drives. I don't think he will be a big power guy, but something in the 15-20 homers, plus some solid doubles and triples power.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 11:40 AM) The JonBenet Ramsey Investigative thing on CBS was really good. They had a private team reinvestigate the case basically. I don't want to give it away but the conclusion makes a lot of sense. Totally agree. Loved their approach and the effort they put into an actual investigation, instead of just rehashing the history of it. IMO, if you are going to watch just one of the specials, watch the CBS one.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) White Sox will most likely pick 11th or 12th. At least that takes them out of the discussion for QO free agents. I think their spending habits will have more to do with that.

Who Will Be The Next Manager of the White Sox
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 11:11 AM) So you would not hire somebody who's managed before and has already been with the team for the full year as essentially the "assistant manager" simply because he respected Robin enough to not take his job during the middle of the season? That's a pretty ridiculous reason. They know what they have in him. Managing a handful of games this year in garbage time is not going to change their opinion of him. I think the idea is that he wouldn't miss out on his second choice, just because of his first choices timeline.

Who Will Be The Next Manager of the White Sox
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 10:46 AM) I would agree with you but he was kind of pushed out by the cub so I see his point with the White Sox and don't think it should reflect on him as much. Being a bench coach you are essentially getting a preview of what the guy could do as a manager. You have got to see his work ethic, how he relates to the players, his baseball IQ, and how he manages personnel. The White Sox know if they want him or not, and I doubt that managing this team for two or three months would have really changed their opinion of him too much, from what he has already shown them.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 08:49 AM) Ha, I thought the same thing. Way over the top. I also thought there were too many quiet conversations. For a pilot, after such a big event like 98% of the country's leaders being killed, that should have been a fast hour of hectic "what should we do now" moments. Instead it seemed to drag every 5 minutes when Sutherland's character and his wife would talk about their feelings. Has me concerned for the pacing going forward but i'm hopeful they'll work it out. I especially had that thought in the scene where they let him walk outside... alone... after a gigantic terror attack on the capital which killed pretty much everyone. Contrast that with the stories from 9/11 where the Secret Service quite literally told W that he couldn't go back to Washington no matter how much he insisted to go.
