Something in this range is within a solid view of market value, actually even the high end of market value. He's probably due something like $3 million and 10-12 in the next two arb years, so if you go 5/15 in the next two years, that puts the last two years at $80 million. Maybe you work him into 10/20/35/35 to get his attention, or push say $5 to $10 million to him up front as a signing bonus and go like 10/20/30/30 with a $5 million signing bonus and $5 million buy out on the last year?

And while it would have been nice for Robert to go through the motions, he doesn't have that 2 in 100 arm that would have made this play. But it is almost a professional courtesy to at least give it a try.

Like I have been saying, his situation is weird with how little he is making now vs how much he will potentially be looking for in free agency. He could be a $350-400 million pitcher in two years if he stays healthy. He could also be on his 2nd TJS. But today he is making $800k. If he is looking at himself in the Garrett Cole column, while the Sox are looking at him like Glasnow, that could easily cause an honest divide.

It's telling that they are being so careful with Drew Thorpe, but still haven't taken the foot off the gas with Crochet.

I keep looking for signs that the Sox system is somehow getting past some of the stupid mistakes it make in the past, and it is things like this which give me pause. We still seem to be trying to rush some guys.

It's wild to think, but the Sox could be adding 10 to 15 quality prospects to the organization at the deadline, if they get everything out the door of value, and don't do something stupid with Benny. Obviously they aren't going to all be top 100 guys, but even deals like Middleton last year added some depth and ceiling to an organization in need of both. A few of these guys will probably be added right to the active roster while many will be years away. Guys like Soroka and DeJong weren't mentioned either.

Why start now?

Their entire top 5 would be wild. Honestly though? Hold Benny and divide up Robert and Crochet to two different teams. Be nice to pull in 7/8 players with a top 20 guy in each deal, plus 3-4 top 100s, and maybe even some young Latin talent too so as to spread out the waves of players. Then you still have the lesser deals to try to scout more back end of the 100 talent, or even guys like Korey Lee, Ky Bush, or Jake Eder who the shine cam off of, but you still like.

Only a few teams really can be in this race. It's going to take both quality and quantity to get either one of these guys.
