Official 2009-2010 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) Reddick would be a good fit on the Bulls and could turn into a nice bench piece (they could use a shooter and JJ's actually been better than expected). I'm pretty excited about the possibilities the Bulls have. Who knows if they pull it off, but my goal is they sign two guys (at least one of them being Bosh/Wade/Lebron) and hire Karl as there coach. I never thought I would agree with a statement like this, but it is true. JJ could play the role that Pargo was supposed to play.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (vandy125 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 12:02 PM) Very good article put out recently on the Wall Street Journal that talks about the wasted chance we had with Healthcare Reform. I've seen a lot about the "30 million new customers" for insurance companies, but without effective ways to push people into the program, you will have the healthy opting out and paying a fine instead of paying for the more expensive insurance that they can jump into when they get sick. This has been done before in other parts of the country: Wall Street Journal Article It also pretty well shows the the point that health care companies will leave the industry sooner than eat the brunt of paying for health care reform.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 11:42 AM) 2nd best hope. The best hope is, IMO, the Volt. Yeah, there are a fair number of issues to getting back to it. The key question though is...why did GM lose its ground in market share to Toyota? The real answer is the type of vehicles they chose to make, and no matter how much people try to blame "Legacy costs", the reality is that GM wasn't making the type of cars people wanted to buy, in terms of the variety of car, the fuel efficiency, and the quality. Except that legacy costs were the biggest single determining factor in the direction that management felt that had to go to maintain profitability. Instead of anticipating changes, they were pretty much stuck into staying with the most profitable lines to maintain their existence. They couldn't afford to get into lines of product that didn't afford them those same margins.

Dye says "crowded outfield" prolonged his slump
QUOTE (Friend of Nordhagen @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 11:40 AM) Well, JD almost got it right. The arrival of Rios did affect his numbers -- but not because he lost playing time. Fact is, he pouted. Big-time. That seemed pretty clear, just listening to him and watching him at the time. Its either that or he just admitted what people have started to speculate for a while... He is pretty weak mentally. Remember when the trade rumors popped up with him to Boston, the same thing happened.

Dye says "crowded outfield" prolonged his slump
So in other words, there is zero chance he is back here in 2010.

QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 10:22 AM) Sox signed RHP Orber Moreno. Which begs the question...who is Orber Moreno? http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/orber-moreno.shtml Welcome to the Mexican leagues.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 09:52 AM) Or you bother adjusting for inflation. Since this is the Dem thread, I'm allowed to quote a blog for the math and demand that instead of attacking the source as a lazy pajamas wearing blogger you actually tell me where the math is incorrect. Just to back up that data, here's what GM's profits looked like 10-15 years ago. On the order of $5 billion/year in 1990's dollars. If you want to adjust for inflation on one side, then you need to adjust for loss of earnings power on the other end. How much money could that $50 billion have been making while we sit and wait for the inflation adjusted dollars to start showing up? There is also on consideration for the massive fall in market share that took place since the times you are quoted as well. The estimated share of the market then was 29.2%. The numbers being quoted now are anywhere between 15-20%. Factor in the gigantic fall in sales for their most profitable vehicles over the course of that time, not to mention the closing of multiple name plates over that time, and it doesn't take much to realize exactly how pie in the sky that analysis is exactly. Lazy is actually a pretty good way to describe that column for as much critical information as he left out, if you wanted to think like an actual analyst. The sad thing is that the best hope for GM is happening now with the problems Toyota is having, and they are totally unequipped to respond to it right now.

Why isn't Ricky Henderson ever in Steroid talk?
Nothing would surprise me. Just because he was before the "steroid era" doesn't mean he couldn't have used steroids.

Super Bowl XLIV
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 11:11 PM) I don't think people are going to think of the onside kick. They might remember it, but it's not going to be "forever associated" with the game. They should. It is completely unique in Super Bowl history, and totally changed the game.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 09:12 PM) Really, the sheer willingness not only to be ignorant but to hold it up as something that makes you better than everyone else that we get in your posts...it's somewhat remarkable. Funny that is exactly how I felt arguing with you in the finance thread.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 07:56 PM) Sounded as if Dallas gave up their top prospect and a pick for him. Don't know if Bowman would have been willing to pay that price. Turco's a UFA at the end of the season also right? Yes he is. The Hawks can't trade too many prospects at this point because they need guys for when their middle level stars get too expensive and they have to rebuild the bottom of the roster.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) If they wanted to take over you and your property, I'd fully support it. I truly hate how they could have extended unemployment benefits, that truly must have hurt you and yours. And since they SO WANTED SOOOO BADLY to take over the health care system, the bill proposed pushes 30 million new customers on to them as long as they don't deny. But that doesn't matter kap, everything is equal. If the dems want to (SHOCK!) raise taxes to help raise for the programs the country wants (Medicare, Medicaid) and the the country needs (War Funding) = taking over your property. You really think they won't sell off their interest in GM any taken over company as soon as they can? No you don't. But hey, work hard for those great republicans to go cut taxes and raise defense spending and don't do anything else (except maybe anything the christian base finds immoral). That will solve soooo many problems. To be fair, they have been taking potentially an extra 6% of his paycheck for his whole lifetime now.

Sox un-retire #11
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Its a little different. How come no one takes it out of the mothballs for a full season as a "tribute"? Unretire all the numbers, then every player who ever had a number retired can have someone wear "his" number as a tribute. It will be great. My point is its silly to retire numbers if you are going to unretire them. Does anyone really think a back-up 43 year old infielder is really going to raise the awareness of Luis Aparicio a guy who, its getting at least close to the point that the majority of people in the USCF stands never saw play in a White Sox uniform? Even if it does, will it be long lasting and will JimH's buddies in their board shorts and hats on backwards even care? If you really believe your line of thinking, you probably should find a new user name then.

The environment thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 10, 2010 -> 05:27 PM) So, today, Obama pissed off me and many on the left by softening some of his recent stances on Wall Street and tried to say that what they were doing was, yeah, ok. (ignoring the fact that these guys are terrible businessmen who would be flat broke without the huge intervention of the government)...so now, Obama has made a pro-bank, pro-business-as-usual statement. The logic of this thread tells me that stocks should have skyrocketed today. Link. Flat to down. (You hear a weird sound as balta's confused brain breaks, unable to process this contradiction.) I heard earlier that JPM was the leading gainer on the Dow today. I don't know how it ended up, but the Dow was down like 8 points when I saw it.
