Gitmo in Illinois?
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 15, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) I really feel this "national security threat" is incredibly overblown. Especially when the state of Illinois could be looking at a billion dollar influx...

Ny Times, champion of the Unions.....
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 15, 2009 -> 02:16 PM) Yeah, there have been. It wouldn't change my point, that the original post's point is stupid. Are we to understand that a newspaper's ownership and management not only endorses, but practices every editorial message they publish? And then, so, is Bill Krystal pro-union? Then people need to STFU about what Fox practices outside of the newsroom.

I don't get it
QUOTE (chisoxt @ Nov 15, 2009 -> 11:31 AM) Why is it everytime an expensive, but short term veteran player is available just about every fan wants to unload the whole farm system to acquire him? They ignore the fact that we have many more needs in other areas and that the practice of mortgaging every decent prospect you have for a quick fix is not sustainable. Even the big market teams like the Yankees, Red sox and Dodgers are smart enough to realize that you have to keep some of your younger players, particualary young pitchers who can fill important bullpen roles. That way you don't have to overspend and get overused rejects like Linebrink and MacDougal. Yes, getting Crawford or Gonzalez would be great but at what cost? Then when we overpay to get guys like them or Rios and Peavy, there is the inevitable self pity and whining on the part of management that we are too poor to fill other roster positions. We will have the best rotation in the league next year but no backup help from the bullpen. If this team wants to achieve sustainable success in the long term, at some point they have to get to the point where they develop their own players. As the economy sputters and revenue streams will be hard to sustain, the Sox have to be smart when it comes to management of their roster. Buying expensive pieces off the shelf will not be the answer. I think you lost me in the first paragraph when you compared the Sox to teams that have payrolls of 100%+ and 50%+ HIGHER than the Sox, and used them as an example of how to operate. It is easy to do things when you can go out and be the highest bidder every off-season. The White Sox can't operate like that. Because of their natural payroll constraints they have to try to make players fit into a very narrow window of salaries and service to balance out with the bigger salaries that they have. Because we can't throw two hundred million dollars at players, we have to throw prospects if we are going to get players to fill gaps. It is either that or take our lumps for a couple/few years until these players maybe develop.

What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?
QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 14, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) When my son earned his Eagle Scout rank, we solicited congratulation letters from a wide range of people, from Presidents to sports teams. By far the coolest letters came from the White Sox (who also tossed in a cap), the Cowboys, Nintendo (wrote a great letter, talked about Eagle Scouts at their company), and EA Games who sent him a soon to be released racing game. 80% of the letters where very generic, congrats on your special day, type thing. They could use it for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. About half a dozen wrote letters that were actually personalized enough to stand out, the White Sox were one of those. Knowing their history, that doesn't surprise me at all.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2009 -> 04:10 PM) More fascinating stats...while both had a single down year (Rios last year, Crawford in 2008)...if you take a look at their OPS+ numbers, Rios has 2 seasons, 2006 and 2007, that are better than any season Crawford has put up offensively. His kinda down year in 2008 where he put up a 112 OPS+...that would be a pretty good year for Crawford. And Rios is more than likely a better CF to boot. We get the player Toronto had...and that's more production than you'd get from Crawford for less money. Wow. That really gives you some perspective on Rios and his contract.- Official 2009-2010 NHL Thread
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 15, 2009 -> 12:25 AM) Theres a strong rumor going around that Kane and Toews are real close to signing long term extensions, and they expect announcements as early as next week. I just saw that on sportsrise on CSN. Sweet.- Sox GM Meetings
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 14, 2009 -> 11:38 AM) And Jose Contreras the same year, plus he tried for Carlos Delgado but Delgado invoked his NTC. Contreras wasn't as significant as Peavy and Rios in terms of cash allowed, but he did have 2+ years remaining on his contract when we got him. The Yankees did eat salary though. Yeah, I can't remember what Esteban Loiaza was making at the time, but even if you look at the money we picked up in 2004 to get Contreras, I know we added money. We added a bunch if you looked the years remaining on his deal.- Films Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 14, 2009 -> 07:24 AM) Two of my favorite movies as a kid. And yes, now when I watch them they are campy and not very well done on the effects side, but they did what they could back then. That stop motion stuff was awesome when you were 4 years old. If you think Ursula Andress in a toga for the entire movie is ghey, then yes I was born in 1973, so I remember the movies very well. For me it was also the era of Star Wars, and the movies were terrible when compared to that.- What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?
QUOTE (The Beast @ Nov 13, 2009 -> 10:15 PM) Where do you go and what have you thought about as a profession? I have a friend like you who has a 2.1 high school GPA and a 35 on his ACT and he feels the same way about school. Do they have a work-study program for you at school? That might help. I went to sign up for classes today at SAU and on my way up towards Peoria, I received a call from Mr. Boyer. I asked him about what kind of degree I'd need (PR or business), if they care about what school you went to, how work experience is weighed against an MBA and things of that nature. He pretty much said it doesn't matter what kind of degree I get, though a business degree would be more helpful than a communication studies degree, that the school you attend doesn't matter and that they don't care if you have an MBA, that work experience in the industry is valuable and weighed heavily. I was pleased to see him take time out of his day to talk to me, even if it was for just 10 minutes! So that was exciting. I've said it before, and I will say it again. Brooks Boyer is an all around great guy. He is a huge find for the Sox.- Official 2009-2010 NHL Thread
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 13, 2009 -> 10:33 PM) Boston basically had to dump his contract for draft picks because they couldn't fit him into the cap IIRC. Hopefully we won't have to do that with the big 3. They have a lot of other payroll they can still move.- Sox GM Meetings
