The lineup needed
Its hard to bench Dye, but I think you might be right. If the back is as bad as it looks, it is time. Watch Dye's swing on a pitch on the outer half. It is brutal.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 05:27 PM) That's not the point. It is exactly the point. If we can't get a guy, how can you hold it against the franchise? That is counter logical. We aren't going to get a Derick Jeter no matter what we do. We should be concentrating on who we can get.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) Right now, every report seems to suggest that there's no obvious favorite and it will likely come down to a couple of votes. Those votes may well hinge on whether or not the nation's most well known Chicago White Sox fan makes a trip to Copenhagen to lobby on behalf of his country, as previous successful leaders (i.e. Tony Blair) did. He had better. Heck I am sure he owes a few favors around these parts.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 11:18 PM) I do when it's the government telling me what to do - here's why. They may give me credit for eating veggies, but they will deny me care if I eat a Snickers Bar. And that ain't right. I still don't understand why that line (the GOVERNMENT telling me, an individual) doesn't matter to you. Especially because at least today you have the right to leave a private insuranace company. The bills already include provisions forcing you to have insurance, which means you have to be subject to any rule or regulation that the government saids you do. That is a an epic change in self-determination.

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 10:44 PM) You know, the easy answer is to point at the fact that this doesn't happen in the rest of the world...but really, another way of thinking about it, is this really true? I mean, do people like going to the doctor? Do people like taking medicines? We're not exactly talking about giving away plasma TV's here. Do you really need a disincentive to go to the doctor? Are there people just lining up to go there because they can? Or do people go to the doctor because they feel a need to see a doctor because they're something genuinely wrong with them? And if people feel a need to see a doctor, do we really want them to decide not to go because it's too expensive? Typically, the data keeps saying that having them not go winds up costing a lot anyway, because you're not getting treatment for things that can get worse. Its not about liking going to the doctors office. Its about something that becomes a "right" in people's minds. It is an economic truism that people use more of something the cheaper it costs. It is also a pretty common behavior that if people feel they are entitled to something they will do it just out of spite. I am guessing the only thing that keep the rest of the world from flooding the doctors office is the six months waits, which according to you guys won't happen here, so I am not sure what exactly is going to change proven human behavior here.

Why did we trade Nick Swisher?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 11, 2009 -> 04:29 AM) will ypu please, pretty please, prove that to me statistically? Not that they are the end all, be all, but when a guy is stealing at around a 68% on the year and has been picked off atleast 6 times, it wouldn't appear that he's putting much pressure on anyone but his own team. How about the pick off throw that went into right field the other day?

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 04:55 PM) Aren't we paying for them anyway? I mean, if they do go to the hospital, don't we, as taxpayers eventually pick up the tab? Maybe not directly...but some hospitals (maybe all hospitals) don't turn anyone needing medical help away. And these people usually don't go to get help until they are well along in whatever problem they have, which leads to more and more costs. So, is the problem that if this bill is passed, we KNOW we are paying taxes for healthcare? Instead there will be zero disinsentive to go the doctors, and the offices will be packed. That will lead to even more costs than ever before.

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 12:26 PM) What are you talking about? There is a clause leaving them out. That makes it law. That means they have to check. You are asking for something that is already there. Your request is akin to saying the law regarding murder should also have a clause stating "oh, and, if someone DOES murder someone else, make sure you arrest them". If you didn't have a police department to investigate murders, how would you arrest anyone?

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) If the government tried to raise taxes by the amount that we pay above what everyone else pays for healthcare, the right would absolutely explode. That'd be like a $10 trillion tax increase over 10 years. Conversely, if we could somehow magically switch to the NHS, that'd be the equivalent of a $12 trillion tax cut over 10 years. Yeah, some pay more than others, but really, let's understand how monstrous the numbers we're talking about here actually are. And if Obama gets his way, this is exactly what is going to happen. I don't buy for nano-second that the federal government is going to stomp its feet and costs are going to drop by enough to cover 10/30/45/50/80 million people. This hasn't happened in the history of social programs in this country. Its insane to thing it will happen all of the sudden. We will be paying trillions and trillion in either new taxes or debt if this health care plan happens.

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) Then what exactly is your answer? You can't deport them all for reasons we've discussed. You can't not cover them for reasons I highlighted a page ago. You can't not fix the health care system and both punish the tens of millions of uninsured and the hundreds of millions who pay for them. The logical endpoint of your argument is that we shouldn't change anything because doing anything will be expensive. Damn right. Which is why a fairly great speaker said a few months ago that "our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions -- that time has surely passed." Sitting on our hands and doing nothing is not an option. Magically making the problem disappear is not an option. Fixing the problem we've allowed to grow is the only option. So instead you are going to punish the hundreds of millions of people who have been doing things right. Wonderful plan.

Stick a fork in Dye
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:25 PM) Age and injury history are clear differences between the 2 guys you cite and JD. JD is older and has a much longer injury history. Jermaine's injury history is more of the unpreventable, bad luck kind of injury, versus a guy like Pods who just seems to be fragile. Of all things to worry about, I wouldn't not resign JD because of that.

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) The big problem IMO is in the chain of logic - the immigration system is broken - fixing the broken immigration system will cause former illegal immigrants to get health care coverage - therefore we shouldn't fix the health care system. You can use the same logic to go in circles forever. "The immigration system is broken, so we shouldn't fix the broken health care system." "The health care system is broken, so we shouldn't fix the broken immigration system". The logic is we can't afford untold trillions of dollars that we are going to have in the future to pay for the ginorous social programs that weren't going to be too expensive when they were created. Now we are looking at increasing these outlays by even more untold trillions of dollars, and now for people who aren't even citizens of this country, and committed illegal acts just to get here. The 50% of this country that is paying taxes currently can't afford what we are doing now, yet the clamoring is for more. Its that kind of logic that would lead you to buy a new BMW after getting fired from a job.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:17 PM) Everbody's been clamoring for a leadoff man on our team with some speed. We have arguably one of the best in baseball right now (the way he played this year) yet we are not crazy about bringing Pods back. It's so easy to take your own players for granted. If Pods is healthy, he ain't done yet. And we have youth in the minors to replace him if for some reason he pulls a Rios. I'd like to see a show of people who think Pods will play in at least 130ish games next year and be injury free.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 02:19 PM) Twins certainly don't have the "it" factor this year, either. They have really been mediocre. Their pitching has been decimated by injury. Its hard to have "it" when you aren't going to battle with your best weapons.

Obama Speech on Health Care, 9/9/09
Guys it is pretty simple. They are exempting illegals because the administration knows in the near future there will be no illegals. They will all be citizens and therefore eligible. That's why there isn't even an effort to find out if someone is here illegally or not.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) I can't imagine that'd have a lasting effect. Are people from all over the world clamoring to visit Atlanta and Salt Lake? Atlanta is still reaping the benefits of the infrastructure overhaul to this day. The work done on the interstate system alone was worth it.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) That's my beef though. Their plan does not call for fixing public transit. This would be a golden opportunity to overhaul a decrepit infrastructure. You know the way things work... They aren't going to throw a few billion on top of it so that costs are kept down up front. That comes later when Daley corners the state and feds into making sure that especially rapid transit gets fixed, otherwise the city, state, and country look third world. It will be his usual blackmail of a situation and blabbering incoherent speech, filled with "What do you want from me?"'s all over the place.

2016 Olympics
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 10, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) You must not ride on public transit here. They were saying they'd add shuttle buses. Shuttle buses?! Rush hour is regularly a clusterf***. Add a million plus to the current system and you get complete failure. That is kinda the point of winning the Olympic bid. They HAVE to fix these problems if they win it, or they risk the probability of Chicago looking like a craphole to the rest of the world. We get a month worth of tourist headaches in exchange for fixing some major transportation problems. I'll take it.
