  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 19, 2008 -> 07:56 AM) Actually, the main reason Gload wasn't around in '05 was an injury. The shoulder injury made him all but worthless because he couldn't play any OF, and the Sox already had 1B and a guy who hit lefty as a DH.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) I hope he's not an option regardless of how long we control him. As a back of the pen/swing guy, he is fine. I wouldn't want him out there in the 7th or 8th inning of a close game, but as a guy who comes in to suck up 4 innings when a pitcher is in trouble, or to work the 6th inning that is fine.
  3. This is the latest story I could find on the situation... http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/130682
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 03:32 PM) He's just not very good. My brother saw him face the Bulls twice this year, and said he was throwing 85 mph and gave up a lot of homers. I'm not giving up on him either, but it's astonishing when people say he might compete for a starting rotation spot this year. He was also pitching with an arm injury, right?
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 03:10 PM) Its called correlation. The heat map that someone posted here a couple weeks ago was a good example. In the great majority of the country, Obama did better than Kerry, which makes correlated sense with the fact that Obama was better than Kerry nationally as well. But that geographical area we are referencing, the opposite happened. And those areas have a history of being culturally less open-minded - though again, this is a net tendency, not an absolute. Of course, correlation is not necessarily causation. There could be other causes. Do you have another theory? So if there was an overlay in areas that were primarily black where Obama's gains outgained the national numbers, would this be the same type of "tendency'?
  6. Bob Dylan at #7? Yeah, I stopped reading right there. Artist? Sure. Songwriter, hell yeah. Singer? Not a chance.
  7. TCQ was 5th with no first place votes, one second place, four thirds, and eight fourths. JD finished 15th place while getting a single 4th place vote to go with some eighths and tenths.
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:38 PM) Who says that even remotely applies to you? It applies to a certain percentage of the country (and anybody who pretends otherwise is just lying to themselves and everyone else), but why assume people are including you in that group when they're not? I actually get just as pissed off whenever people say things like "most black people voted for Obama because he's black." Uh, no, most black people voted for him because he was a Democrat, a few voted for him because he's black. It sounds like an apples to apples comparision on small parts of the country who voted solely on race to me.
  9. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 07:00 AM) So far I am very much unimpressed with Huet...... but its tough to get into a flow when you don't start more than 2 games in a row though. Khabibulin seems to be able to handle it, and he has been a starter way longer than Huet.
  10. On the surface this looks like a pretty clear cut case of trading on non-public information. I would be interested to see Cuban's side of things.
  11. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 08:46 AM) You are talking like the everyday worker is not part of the problem. These Fu**tards that run the unions knew full well what they were doing, as did the fu**tards that head the big three. This needs to sting on both ends. If the unions won't budge, bankruptcy will come calling and quick. And the pain from that will be far greater than giving now. Remember the Steel cos. How did they do? Why wouldn't you give in on healthcare premiums, co-pays etc. This is one area where huge savings could be made in short order. When you are talking about ginourmous legacy costs, and a $50,000 per employee cost disadvantage, this is why bankruptcy is the best option here. A cash infusion in this case does not solve the root problem.
  12. I love the classic comedies. If all else fails, you can always throw in a Mel Brooks or Kevin Smith movie, along with a few other cult classics.
  13. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:07 AM) I feel like Balta http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=68701 Did anybody hear anything?
  14. QUOTE (juddling @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 08:22 AM) Did anyone else catch the new Jeff Dunham special on Comedy Central Sunday night and when it was over think "Man....was that it?????" For an hour long show they had WAY too many commercial breaks and while I thought that Akmed the Dead Terrorist was his best of the night. Peanut.....his bread and butter.....i thought was way too short and wasn't really all that funny (though he did have a moment of two.) After waiting a long time for a new JD special....i felt a bit let down. Then again...maybe it was just me. Jingle Bombs was awesome.
  15. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 08:31 AM) From what I have heard, the US is taking an active presence in the region. I don't know if they're actively engaged any pirates on a regular basis (they have fired on them in the past), but the mere presence of a US warship is probably enough to deter a group from attacking the region it is in. The problem is that the international group patrolling these waters is just too small to stop every attack. I think a missile or two in the pirates hulls might change their mind about piracy.
  16. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 08:31 PM) Whoa. I am not necessarily a fan of Gitmo, but I really wish he waited until he was President and presumably receives "the rest of the story". I am thinking, guessing, hoping, that there is more information that Obama does not have that may come into this decision. So basically, I wish he would slow the f*** down and stfu until he has a couple days in office. I'll make Barack a deal, if he quits talking about his plans before he gets into office, I will quit analyzing his plans before he gets into office
  17. I don't see the White Sox spending any real money on the pen besides what is there. The only thing that might change that is if Bad Bobby gets dealt somewhere. Other than that, they have the pen pretty well set up. We already have Jenks, Thornton, Linebrink, and Dotel at the back end. We are most likely looking at one of Aaron Poreda or Clayton Richard making the pen, with the other nailing down the 5 spot in the pen, unless Marquez wins it, which would probably leave Richard in the pen with Poreda being stretched out as a starter in the minors. That leaves Wasserman, Jimenez, Russell, and Logan (Boone on the outside looking in after last year) to fight it out for the last spot, or maybe two. On a side note, the Sox still show Carrasco on the 40 man roster, did we re-sign him? I don't remember us giving him a multi-year deal, or hearing about an option being exercised. Or does he just not have enough major league time to be a free agent? if he is still on the roster, that probably gives us 5 spots locked up in the pen, with one, MAYBE two spots up for grabs between the list of candidates.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 02:56 AM) Ah, but he didn't exactly say that. Sorry, I just wanted to see what if felt like to play devil's advocate. Texsox has been hogging that recently . recently? Try for about 6 years now!
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 01:03 AM) Welcome to Grammar Rock, grownups version. +1 for the SchoolHouse Rock reference.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 12:38 AM) He was never going to get in anyways, considering Reinsdorf has a ton of pull and he knew it was a mistake to let him into the NBA, but it's safe to say that this is the final nail in the coffin. That's what it all boils down to. Cuban never had a chance anyway.
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) You forgot what might be the most important adjective - competitive. Really good point!
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 08:02 PM) Which is, of course, exactly how the people who benefited from the building of the bubble wanted it. At this point, I think I'm willing to follow along with ideas for a complete overhaul of the regulatory environment. Not just changing a few laws, but doing something like you advocate and starting from scratch. I'd be interested in hearing other ideas though, but I hope some of those will come with time. Bill Clinton and George Bush?
  23. QUOTE (kwill @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) Ken Williams is one of the winter's most significant wheelers and dealers. He is marketing Javier Vazquez, Bobby Jenks, Jermaine Dye and others as he tries to overhaul the White Sox. The Mets are afraid of the red flag on Jenks, whose strikeout rate has dropped precipitously from 50 in 39 1/3 innings in 2005 to 38 in 61 2/3 innings this past season. And although GM Omar Minaya checked in on Sabathia, it does not mean the Mets will get into a bidding war with the Yankees for the 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner. Scouts in Arizona for the Arizona Fall League and the White Sox's minor league people are convinced that Gordon Beckham, the eighth pick in the MLB draft this past June, will be Chicago's everyday second baseman by June. I find both being very telling of the whitesox offseason plans as getting everyday centerfield rather than a middle infielder seems to be a priority to williams. Beckham seems to a prospect that is already polished in many ways and will be a major impact in August and September. Swisher deal in my opinion reveals that Williams has no intentions on trading Dye as he only has one year on his contract and Swisher would have been a low cost replacement in right field. Bobby Jenks on the other hand may be dealt as Kenny doesnt believe in paying big money to closers. I could see him spread the wealth elsewhere along with getting prospects back in order to make the whitesox younger. Jenks could be a centerpiece for a trade involving the Giants. Javier may interest some teams as he reliable and could entice some suitors with his talent level. Maybe, if the Braves pull out of the Peavy sweepstakes they could come knocking on Kenny's door. Relying on the media for Kenny Williams off season plans is an exercize in futility. We'll know his plans when they happen. The one thing we always know about Kenny is that if he thinks something will improve the team, he will do it, even if it is a position of strength.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 07:54 PM) I believe you just made the point there. If the government regulations don't do anything, or aren't designed to keep insane things like the unregulated CDS gambling market from appearing, then bad regulation is just as effective as no regulation. You will never get good regulation under the system we have set up. It is too fragmented, disjointed, and contradictory.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2008 -> 03:44 PM) Coming at this from the left...some of us out there would say that this is the biggest failure of the low-regulation environment we've created the last 30 years or so. Up and down the line, there's probably 15 different steps where simple government regulations and enforcements could have prevented the mess from getting to where it is now. I.e. additional disclosure requirements on basic loans, better regulation of the investment insurance/rating companies, cutting off the CDS market at its infancy before it ballooned, and so on. Because stupid little things like not taking out an $80,000 BMW loan when you couldn't afford it were no longer illegal, it actually makes some economic sense for people to take out those loans, because it gets them the item, they don't take the losses, and all it costs them is their credit score. We're rewarding risky behavior because we as a nation and as a government decided that our behaviour wasn't risky enough. So we're punishing the people who weren't that risky, like you and I. So explain to me to me how places that have huge amounts of government regulations are failing? And don't forget that large amounts of that risk behavior were government mandates.
