Lets Give Floyd a Standing Ovation
What an incredible preformance by Gavin. I really liked seeing the effort to keep it going by Swish, and the fact that right away Floyd wanted the ball back and to keep going. Damn good job kid

Indiana / North Carolina primary election thread
Lake will go big to Obama, LaPorte will break for Clinton pretty well. Hillary and Bill were here (laporte co) twice in three days. Obama wasn't here at all.

All Things Pro-Obama
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 6, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) I'm afraid I don't understand the question. Are you asking whether Obama might change his position on an issue or two every 16 years (I hope to God he does), or are you asking if Obama might suddenly decide that because every expert is against him on an issue he declares that expert opinion is worthless (which I certainly hope he doesn't). Btw, BO just grabbed a NC Super. More like if he already has his little attackdog proxies digging up these kind of attacks on opponents, nothing is really going to change once he gets in office.

All Things Pro-Obama
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 6, 2008 -> 03:23 PM) Seriously, pulling an ad out from 16 years ago to prove that something a different person said under different circumstances about a different issue is supposed to convince me of what exactly? There's plenty of reason to dislike Hillary, or to dislike these specific comments. There are more recent remarks by Hillary that do a better job. This is really just overkill, and it really isn't productive. Which really makes me wonder, what about a President Obama would be any different?

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 6, 2008 -> 07:59 PM) I dunno about Lake/Porter/Laporte but looking at the map right now it seems like he's underperforming there, at least from what I expected. But he's doing strong really close to Indianapolis which I didn't expect. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, this is big union territory, which is big time Clinton demographics here. It doesn't surprise me at all. They have by far the best orgaization for getting out votes, as they have been doing it for something like a century here.

J4L is headed for the slammer
I lost a college roommate to a drunk driver. My only advice would be to learn your lesson, and never ever take that chance again. One night could literally ruin an entire family.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 6, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) MSNBC is reporting that there has been a HUGE turn out in HEAVY (75% republican) republican districts. So huge the turn out is bigger than in the 2004 presidential election! No one is really sure how this will work it self out. Might be centrist republicans going to Obama. Could be far right trying to keep "Rev. Wright" out of the White House. no one is sure yet. QUOTE (knightni @ May 6, 2008 -> 05:08 PM) CNN/AOL both have Clinton up by 14-18% in Indiana. I told you guys that the crossover vote against Obama would be huge in Indiana. One interesting, completely unscientific polling I did with people I knew from different towns along the South Shore train route was that people in predominantly white towns did not get contacted by the Obama campaign, while those in predominately minority communities did. Racial profiling anyone? Just a thought.

QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ May 6, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) Well, I've performed my civic duty. I'm leaving work early today for the same reason. I am having a hard time deciding which ballot to pick up because there are a lot of Democrats in local races I want to vote for/again, but there are republicians I would like to vote for/against as well.

GOP seeks order to primary chaos
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 6, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) 1) Use the GOP model. (Note: due to the cost of the primary system, if one party makes a change, the other party almost always has to follow) 2) DUMP THE SUPERDELEGATES! The interesting thing is that the whole reason for the superdelegates was to give the Dems a power to decide the primary if needed. Well the power has been pretty worthless in getting rid of Hillary, so the whole system ends up being worthless.

GOP seeks order to primary chaos
The interesting one will be to see what the Dems do to ensure that their mess doesn't happen again. Their primary has been a complete disaster.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2008 -> 06:19 PM) Van Wilder is only the coolest f***ing man on the planet. My favorite role of his goes back to a show that died a quick death in "Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place."

College Age Investing
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 6, 2008 -> 07:18 AM) I was very encourtaged that as we were discussing investing ideas, I mentioned his team won the Stock Market game two years in a row. He replied, we won by picking one stock and taking a huge risk. All or nothing. Far different then this, dad. (implied: you moron, how could you even compare). One year he picked Timberland because he couldn't think of anything else and was wearing Timberland hicking boots. I am considering setting this up like an investment club with him controlling the investments. That way I can toss in some also, but later pull mine out if necessary. Grandma and grandpa might also wish to join in. He is so far ahead of where I was at that age. I would have travel brochures spread out, my golf clubs and running shoes packed, and blow through that money in a heart beat. A bit of knowledge about those games, that is how they are won. Investing in real life is NOTHING like that. He'd be broke in a month. Taking risk is fine, but shoving all your chips in only ensures that you will lose all of your money sooner or later. Heck I can't really talk, because my most successful investment strategy to date has been to function as a market-maker in a very specific niche market. So far it has worked like crazy. Risk-wise it is a really stupid idea.

College Age Investing
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 6, 2008 -> 07:05 AM) Right, which is why I suggested just parking it in a CD. I am leaning towards suggesting to him $3000 in a CD to pay off the loan in 3-5 years $1000 in a 401K/IRA $500 Savings account $500 invest with an estimated horizon of 6-8 year. About the time he gets out of college and needs a car/house/start a business/etc. He would be adding to this with income. $1000 current spending needs. Single speed bike, new desk, chair, etc. Good plan. The rest of the suggestions would be fine ideas if it was OK if he lost money. That is the number one rule of investing. Only invest what you can afford to lose.
-
College Age Investing
If it is something that he HAS to have that $3500 at the end of that time period, DO NOT invest in ANYTHING to do with stocks. No mutual funds, no commodities, no ETFs, nothing like that. There is the very large chance that you can lose money in those investments.

Soxtalk Softball Part II
Well we had been trying to organize the rematch with WSI for the softball game we played with them last year, but they have officially wimped out now. The question to the general posting public is such... Is there enough interest in a softball game on Soxtalk to get two teams together to play an internal game, followed by tailgating and a patio party? The two dates we are eyeing are July 19 vs KC or Aug 23 vs TB. Both are saturday nite games, which gives us time to play an early afternoon softball game. Who all is interested? The possibility of including friends or coworkers to make this happen is also something we are open to if need be. IN! This is the problem with liberals in charge
QUOTE (Texsox @ May 5, 2008 -> 02:47 PM) Correct, so perhaps that is not the area to look to if it is decided that Universities need to increase their contribution to the tax base. But what portion of their income would not be considered private? Look up the difference in earning power for a student who finishes HS and one who finishes a 4 year degree. That is a direct result of a college education. Start multiplying those differences times what that person would pay in taxes over a lifetime on that additional income, and times that times the amount of students who would be hurt by a tax on education. I don't think it would even come close.
