DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 10:24 PM) I was watching a show on the Discovery Channel the other night about the dotcom crash from 2000-2002. One point brought up was that Greenspan's inaction then late reaction was partially responsible for the severity of the crash. How far do you go to save stupid companies? This is a FREE market system after all. The whole point of it is that the state isn't supposed to be making overall market decesions, that should be left up to the individual. Bubbles happen, as do bad investments. The beauty of the US is that you write it off and move on. You can't, and shouldn't, rescue everyone.

DEM Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) Carvell basically called Richardson a Judas .... on Good Friday. Supposedly, Richardson and slick Willie had a pretty heated phone conversation as well and Obama's campaign has compared Willie to Eugene McCarthy. This is fun s***. In all seriousness, is there really a reason that James Carville gets treated any differently than Karl Rove? They are the exact same person. Yet one gets to parade around CNN and the news stations, while the other is the punchline to jokes.

New NY Governor talks about his past
What part of Europe are you talking about? The part that has been stalking the royal family, or the one who has been expressing abject horror at details of the French President's life (his vacations, what brand names he uses etc)?

Obama's Pastor
I hope you all realize that because of people like Wright, who get the publicity on TV, there are a LOT of people who really feel this way. To just dismiss them isn't very smart.

Harold Baines Will Be The New Outfield Statue
QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 05:12 PM) I'm making the assumption that Paulie won't be in Chicago past 2010. If he does get that extension, and is productive into his late 30s, I agree that he'd have a strong case. Otherwise, the '05 playoffs are the only thing that separates him from guys like Maggs and Robin Ventura. Well that and about 150 more HRs than anyone in White Sox history not named Frank Thomas...

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 01:32 PM) It's really starting to look like that's the case. I don't see how she gets away with blatantly lying all the time. The Clintons have done this for a decade and a half, and everyone has made excuses for them. It works, why would they change now?

Harold Baines Will Be The New Outfield Statue
QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) I don't think that Paulie will have a statue to race. Because if they erect one for him, they're going to need statues for Robin Ventura, Roberto Hernandez, Maggs, and every other really-good-but-not-HOF-caliber former Sox player. I wouldn't write off Pauly so quickly. If he gets another contract extention, we could be talking about the all time leading home run hitter in Chicago White Sox history. That isn't a light statement to make.

Overall, What do you think of the tourney this year?
3 double digit seeds made it to the Sweet Sixteen. This is my kind of year.

First Supreme Court case re: 2nd Amendment in 70 years
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) Doubtful. Most crimes are committed with semi-automatic handguns, not rifles. I'm sure some crimes are committed with illegally-modified guns, but making it illegal to modify a gun isn't going to stop someone who is going to use that gun to commit a crime anyway. My point was that you can get an automatic weapon and if you're going through all of the BS to get one, you're not going to be the type of person using it for the wrong reason. Edit: The machine gun has to have been manufactured prior to May 19th, 1986. FYI, Bingo. Time and time again, empirical evidence shows that gun bans just don't really work. A majority of crimes are committed with illegally possessed guns anyway, so making it harder for law-abiding citizens to get guns doesn't do much of anything to stop criminals from getting their hands on them. This is the same arguement I hear over and over again for making illegal drugs legal.

2007-2008 NHL Catch All Thread
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 22, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) I have to give Tallon and his scouts credit for these types of deals. They seem to have a great eye for finding guys undervalued by other teams, or not in the right situation, and giving them a real chance with the Hawks. Ladd was sort of buried on the Carolina depth chart, however when ever he got solid minuets there, he put up numbers. Sharp is sort of the same case, but he was pretty young when they got him. That obviously was a case of seeing something in Sharp, and knowing he fit with the Hawks. However, it it goes both ways. It's extremely frustrating to see Samsonov having such a good year with Carolina, Calgary seems very happy with Auccoin, and I ever read a story on how Flordia just loves Cullimore, and he has been a great piece to their squad..... Look no further than Patrick Sharp...

Brian Anderson
QUOTE(Disco72 @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) Ozzie may not be perfect, but I find it interesting (disappointing?) that so many people do not want to hold Brian Anderson accountable for his own actions (performance, behavior, and attitude). If he had been above average on one of those three items, none of this discussion would be happening. The two things under his control: behavior and attitude; it is his responsibility to take his job seriously. The great thing about this Spring Training is that BA seems to be finally excelling at all three. That speaks highly of his maturation and emotional intelligence. If it continues, it'll be a great win-win for the Sox and Anderson. If not, I'm sure some will find a way to blame it on someone else. I don't much like the "Blame Ozzie" mentality either. Its not difficult. If you boss asks you to do something, you do it if you value your job. In Anderson's case, this is the difference between his minor league and major league salaries at stake here, not to mention future free agent dollars if he doesn't get his act together.

Brian Anderson
QUOTE(GreenSox @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 09:54 AM) One of the jobs of a manager is to deal with different personalities, even with difficult ones at times. You aren't always surrounded by yes men. Ozzie's answer to a difficult young player is to throw him off the team. Ozzie's so easy to get along with himself. At this point, some of the blame has to go to Williams; he knows Ozzie stubbornly wants speed atop the lineup; nevertheless, he never got Ozzie a good speedy leadoff man. It's no suprise that Ozzie will play an inferior talent like Owens simply to get that speed...look what he did with Erstad last year. Williams has to step in and take these bad hitters away from him. Ozzie has gotten along just fine with players who have a history of being difficult. Look no further than guys like AJ and Carl Everett. Its the guys who won't listen to instruction that he has a problem with. There is a big difference between the two. As long as guys who are willing to go out and do their jobs the way that they are told, you don't hear waves from the Sox team. Its just like any job, the people who listen and work hard are the ones who are favored. The ones who don't listen and cause problems are the ones who get canned.

Crede likely to start on opening day
QUOTE(southsidehawkeye @ Mar 23, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) Hey All, Long time reader... first time poster! (i figured this year I would actually try to join the conversation) Although I really like Crede, and think that he brings a very important glove to the hot corner (which undeniably helps our team a lot... and was a big part of our World Series run) I am very worried about what him staying here will do to Fields (who is almost surely our future at 3B). Fields has shown he is ready to be in the big leagues, he had a great season last year and needs to stay in the major leagues. I believe this not only because moving a young player down to AAA after a great rookie year and a good spring could have a negative approach on his mental game, he might get frustrated and that can seriously hurt his career. But also I am not really convinced that going down to AAA will help him any. Think of when we were all learning to play sports, you get better by facing people who are on your level or better than you. When you're in Field's position you probably wont get better at hitting a Major League curve or learning to take a nasty slider by seeing AAA pitching... he needs time in the bigs to improve in these areas, and this is shown by loads of really, really good prospects who struggle a little when the make that final jump but just need some time to learn the ropes of the big leagues. The only place I think Fields would benefit from some more time at AAA is his defense. He really isn't up to par yet in this area (at least not for Chicago, where we have watched Crede work that corner to an art form the over the last few years). But I think he is serviceable at 3rd, and he will probably improve with time, especially considering how good an overall athlete he is/has been in the past. Anyways, Im sure that all of this has been said before and Im not really adding anything new. Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. on a side note: I am getting really excited for baseball to "officially" start. I think the sox could surprise some people this year! Welcome to Soxtalk

Films Thread
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 11:40 PM) Only everyone in the movie industry disagrees with you. I never thought I'd see these two movies in the same statement. That's a leap of faith right there... I rented them over the same weekend, which is why they were in the same statement. That doesn't mean anything for their relationship. It was completely random. Anyway, I liked Chuck. I thought it was funny LCD humor, which if fun every once in a while. It did what it set out to do. Anyways, back to your regularly scheduled programing... I saw I am Legend over the weekend, and was really disappointed. I was expecting something more like The Stand from the previews. I was OK with the whole vampire thing, but the ending sucked. There were so many potentially good ways to end that movie, and they picked the worst one. Ugh.

First Supreme Court case re: 2nd Amendment in 70 years
QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Mar 24, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) Most gun owners would have no problems with 'reasonable' limits, restrictions, licensing, etc. But with our society today, you know full well that give an inch, take a mile. Automatic weapons are already against the law, except in certain cases (law enforcement and some collectors, but that is mostly vintage stuff). Sure, there is no real need for cop killer bullets and plastic handguns, but when buzz words like 'semi-automatic' get thrown around and nobody seems to understand what that really is, things get heated and misunderstood. Just about any gun today that isn't a single-shot rifle or muzzleloader is semi-automatic. OK, make gun owners take a safety class. The NRA sponsors alot of those, as do some police departments (not many, though). License them. Background checks are good. But some states go overboard. California is trying to pass new laws that will make you have to apply for another permit just to buy ammunition. And they want to make it a crime to give anyone, spouse included, more than 50 rounds of ammo in any 30-day period. You can go thru over 100 rounds at a target range easy. TEx had some good thoughts about this topic, some of which I agree with. I think we have individuals in this society that should not have guns. I think there are many times more that are responsible and should have access to guns if they choose. I think owning a gun is fine. I think owning enough guns to arm a small city, should be looked at. I think practical guns and ammo, for reasonable activities, should be allowed. I think some types of ammo, extreme calibers and loads, fully auto weapons should probably be unavailable to ordinary citizens. The irony is that this reasoning is the exact same reason every "common sense" abortion law has been fought tooth and nail. It is interesting to see the same technniques for getting something made completely illegal are being done.
